Deal of the week: It’s an Xbox and PS4 face-off

Bag a bargain now, ready for all the new games coming at E3

What is it?

A good old fashioned deal-off, with the PS4 in one corner and the Xbox One in the other. Both are great consoles, both come with a seriously tempting games bundle, and both are stonking good value.

What do they do?

Both consoles will gobble up game discs and Blu-ray movies, stream on-demand video and hold an impressive number of downloads, thanks to massive internal hard disks. They’ve got enough power to pump out jaw-dropping visuals, and a year after launch, the games line-up is absolutely massive.

Are they any good?

If you’ve not already jumped to the latest console generation, where have you been? It doesn’t matter which one you buy, both machines have some fantastic games that are definitely worth your time – and helpfully these bundles include a few right out of the box.

The PS4 is packing four absolutely cracking games: Uncharted 4, Doom, Overwatch and Ratchet & Clank. Two are PS4-exclusives, so you won’t be able to play them anywhere else, and the others are a pair of the best shooters around right now. Like to play with friends? Blizzard’s Overwatch is a laugh riot. Prefer to slug it out solo? Doom‘s brilliantly retro campaign is bloody but brilliant.

The Xbox One might have a smaller three game bundle, with Forza 6, Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider, but it also throws in a £25 Xbox Live gift card, and a month’s subscription to EA Access. Which basically means you get to trial every EA game going; think Need for Speed, Battlefield, Titanfall, FIFA, and more.

Anything wrong with them?

Not right now, but it’s looking likely that Microsoft and Sony will have updated, upgraded versions of each console ready to reveal at E3 in a couple of weeks. The PS4 Neo probably won’t be turning up until December, though, and Microsoft doesn’t seem ready to launch a faster Xbox One until 2017 at the earliest. Plus, you’ll still be able to play all the same games on the original consoles – just not with all the whizz bang graphics effects or at 4K resolutions.

Are these really good deals?

Do you even remotely enjoy playing games? Then yeah, they’re both pretty good deals. A PS4 would normally set you back £299, and the Xbox One starts at £250, so by the time you’ve thrown in the game bundles you’re saving about £100 each over buying it all separately. Let’s be honest, not everyone wants to blast demons with a Super Shotgun or put pedal to the metal in Forza, but if you aren’t going to play ’em you can wander down to CEX and trade them in to get some of your cash back.

OK, I’m convinced. Where do I get them?

If you’re sold on Sony, you can bag a PS4 from Tesco by clicking this link here. You’ve got to build the bundle yourself, so make sure to add the right games to your basket before you click buy. Xbox fans will need to head to the Microsoft store online instead, but there’s no messing about with coupon codes or bundle building – just click and buy.
