PSP 4000 – sliding screen and new design for Sony handheld?
While the PSP 4000 is as good as confirmed, most gadget fiends expected Sony to go with the same classic design as their best–selling handheld. But if sources are right, the Big S could be about give the DSi something to think about later this year.
According to vg247.com, their man on the inside has said Sony is working on a new slideout design, hiding the buttons behind a gorgeous screen. This "complete aesthetic overhaul" has been pegged for a December release, perfect for hungry gamers ahead of Christmas.
There's no word on whether it'll come packing multitouch, as rumoured last month. But you can bet Sony will be going all out to bring down the DS and its new DSi sibling.
A Sony spokesman has said that they, "...have nothing to say and they do not comment on rumour and speculation. These stories have been circulating for a while, so we'll see what happens at the trade shows in the summer." Fingers crossed for E3 then!

As long as they keep the price down and add backwards compatibility with the current gen this will be a winner for me.

This may be a bit pickie, but the screen looks awfully close to the two top buttons - close enough to get in the way during gameplay.
Screen looks nice though - any idea on size?

what's the idea? this in late 2009 and the psp 2 in early 2010? sounds more to me like they're one and the same - the psp 2. particularly with such a radical redesign and the rumour of multitouch. looks slick anyway.

That pic looks good.. It better use memory cards and not those dreaded UMD's.. What would cause the DSi to fall would be if the PSP 4000 had a OLED touch screen, playback of high definition movies, a better D-pad as good as nintendo's D-pad and a 3D visual capability.. Then I would buy one

I hope they do include backwards compatability too, but if rumours are true, I'm not sure how they would do it...http://kotaku.com/5160033/rumor-psp-2-wont-have-umd-drive

I agree with J Campbell, They need to ditch the UMD for games (It was ok for films but didn't help the battery life). I think the PSP is superior to DS (epically for graphics and sound), but the load times on games are its weakness. I had the original PSP and one game that really tipped it over the edge for bad load times was WWE 2007 (intro, load, next intro, and load.)
Considering Sony has their own memory cards, I really think they missed a trick there.
Off topic slightly, I’d love to what Microsoft could do with an Xbox portable? I'm a 360 boy, tried the PS3, sold it and kept my 360.
I looked at the rumour that the new PSP might not have UMD for backward compatibility, could Sony not trade the UMD’s for online credit against a download of the same game or a bit less against a newer title. Not sure if that would be possible, but if anyone could a company the size of Sony could.
I think I’d be tempted back into the Sony fold.

fatwallet's suggestion isn't a bad idea but it does have it's issues too.
Once you've downloaded a game, you're stuck with it.
There's no way to sell that game on to get back a bit of cash towards a new game.
Unless, you could 'sell' the game back to Sony, and they send something down to either delete the game from you psp (and psn account) or send something down to render the download useless and credit your PSN account with a few quid.
Means you're happy because you've managed to get something back from that game, plus Sony will be happy because to use that credit you're going to have to buy another game direct from them...
Not sure if it's possible, but would be cool if it is.
