PS3 gets UK Video Delivery Service

20 Nov 2009

PS3 Slim

British gamers are among the first in Europe to get access to the PS3’s Video Delivery Service.

Along with Germany, Spain and France, UK PS3 users will be able to download feature films directly to their consoles for immediate enjoyment.

Films will be available for download as rentals or permanent purchases, with the option to download in standard definition or HD. Prices for download-to-own vids begin at £2.50.

Harry Potter, Angels & Demons, Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and The Dark Knight are among the movies teased in the promo trailer for the service.

It looks as though PS3 owners won’t have to wait long to watch their new purchases either. Sony is promising background downloads that you can begin watching soon after beginning the download process, meaning you won’t have to wait for the entire file to download.

It’s an exciting time for PlayStation owners, with the new firmware allowing Facebook integration and rumours of a forthcoming PS3-compatible version of Firefox from Mozilla.

Are you ready for downloadable films? Or would you still rather have a physical Blu-ray or DVD? Let us know in the comments.

I am yet to find any films on the PSN Video Store which are available to OWN in HD. It seems HD is for rental only as far as I can see. I would like to say I'm ready for downloadable films, but I doubt I will unless I can download them in HD to keep. And I'd probably download them from iTunes as I have the full choice of where to watch them - computer, Apple TV or iPhone.

to 'theskill' - you may already be aware but you can upgrade your hardware on the ps3 in terms of storage space. There is an easy to follow step by step on the internet on how to remove the existing hard drive and replace with a bigger 250gb or even 320gb hard drive for the ps3 !!! hope this is the answer your looking for ! and agreed....FIFA ROCKS! as does COD:MW2 !!

With my 40gig PS3 it's not practical, I suspect many are in the same position and are not willing to tamper with their HDD on their own, are external HDD's an option? Without more storage I just cant see this taking off.

I have a 320GB drive in my PS3, mainly for PlayTV, and was quite looking forward to this service. TBH I would rather take the 5 minute drive to the video store to buy the Blu-Ray for 3 quid more and keep my drive free for PlayTV recordings. Until we have Korean-like Broadband speeds, hi-def downloads remain a painfully slow experience. I recently bought the new Star Trek blu-ray, which has an additional blu-ray of extra features, and a DVD with a digital copy of the film to put a PMP, plus a litmited edition graphic novel of the prequel to the film. All for £17. You just couldn't get that with a download...

Good idea, but poor pricing strategy.  They are just too expensive for what they are and download-able games are the same.  GT Concept is a good game, but I picked up the hard copy for £17 with the potential to sell it on when the download was £20.  It just doesn't add up.

Nice to have the option, especially to own and not just rent will MS follow on Live? Peronally I still prefer to purchase physical media, just seems better value and that I have actual ownership. Prices seem too high also. To me with no distribution, packaging costs etc should be much cheaper. I guess there is bandwidth to pay for, but still not won over by digital distribution.
