Microsoft scrapping Xbox 360 Elite?

06 Mar 2009

Xbox 360 EliteNecessity dictates that if you're an Xbox lover and fan of HD downloads, then the Xbox 360 Elite is the only way forward. But it seems that all is not well with the most expensive of Microsoft's hub, with reports emerging that the console is about to get a dose of the Red Rings of Death.

According to Electronista, the top end console is going to be killed off in its everyday incarnation, with only limited edition, game themed models coming with 120GB of on board storage.

Word is that the recession, coupled with knockdown prices for the Arcade and Pro versions, is causing the £230 console to pile up in stores the world over. Microsoft is planning an official announcement in the next fortnight, with those after more storage for XBLA and movie extras being offered bigger upgrade drives instead.

Either way, it's a blow for Microsoft's plans to lead the HD download revolution with their newest Xbox.

What do you think? Is the Xbox 360 Elite still worth it? Or is the 60GB Pro enough for you? Tell us in the comments section.

What are we thinking? I reckon this is a banker. Can't see them keeping a product that isn't selling.

I can see them doing it, The PS3 is dropping in price a chunk over the next few weeks and the xBox 360E has already been dropped down to £200, so it wouldn't shock if they did stop production. One things for sure if they did drop the price down some more everyone would buy one (even upgrade to one)

Doesn't really bother me to be honest, since the Pro has an HDMI socket anyway the only difference is the hard drive, and that's easily upgradable should you feel the need to.

The red version looks quite nice though.

Yeah there pretty pointless in my mind. You can by the 120gb hard drive seperate and transfer your data with the bundled software and cables. So what's the point?
