Microsoft cuts off more that 600,000 pirate gamers from Xbox Live

11 Nov 2009

Microsoft has taken a step to prevent gamers playing pirated games on modified consoles by cutting them off from Xbox Live.Reports are suggesting a whopping 600,000 gamers may have got the chop, with Microsoft confirming a "small percentage" had been banned for modifying their consoles.Microsoft added that console modification violates the service's terms of use, and that the standard procedure for breaking these rules was to be disconnected."All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox Live," Microsoft said in a statement."The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them."Microsoft has not let anyone in on how it managed to figure out those who had modified their consoles, but those affected were met with a message on trying to log in to Xbox Live that simply said "Your console has been banned from Xbox". Whoops. Those affected will be able to continue playing their console offline, but will not be able to access any of the online services Xbox is so known for.Do you think this is a fair move by Microsoft, or worse – have you been affected? i dont have a modded xbox but to be honest microsoft are doing them selves out of even more money by banning people since they will now lose all the money those 600.000 would of paid to play on xbox live lol thats called shooting yourself in the foot.

x box live is overated as far as online gaming goes, lag time has always been a problem even though it says my connection is excellent. i would never trust anyone to modify my xbox 360, its worth too much to me and the only game i play i pro evo soccer 2008 / 9 / 10!!! haha

I think it's a great move. I do not and never will support piracy as people worked hard to develop that product and it is not a human right to have access to it for free.

Nice one, nobody wants these scabs as part of the online community, they are as bad as the sad little losers who use turbopads, lag switches and glitches. Ban 'em all I say!

Even though I'm a PS3 fanatic, I should say well done microsoft, it's going to cut them off for now but I think really everybody knows there is going to be some little genius out there who's going to find a way so that Microsoft can't see who's xbox is chipped... It's just a computer after all!!

So, this confirms that Microsoft does in fact collect and analyse information about us.  What do they do with that information, besides checking up on us? One shudders to think that if they can do that with an Xbox, what can they collect from a PC?

@cooper444 - No mate, 600,000 will just go out and buy another x-box (if they don't already have one lined up in preperation of them being banned lol). @zernon - "One shudders to think". Seriously LOL that statement. So what if they are "collecting information" - Exactly what is it you think they're collecting? DNA samples from the controller so they can clone us? Most sensitive data I can think of would be credit card, home address etc but you don't HAVE to put those in. Lie about your address when signing up and get a PAYG credit card/use gamerpoints cards etc. There's far too many people going overboard re privacy concerns these days. Saying that, what if M$ teamed up with Google. They could be using streetview to spy into our homes to see if we're loading copied games!!! One shudders to think...
