Dell Adamo gets official unveiling

17 Mar 2009

Dell AdamoAt last. After months of teaser sites and sneak previews, we can finally bring you all the details on the Dell Adamo, the PC giant's attempt to bring down the mighty MacBook Air. And we're pleased to report that it sounds fantastic.

Inside that 16.4mm body you get a 128GB solid state drive, 1.2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, up to 4GB of RAM, with 2GB as standard and connectivity that'll make Apple's size zero model weep with envy. That means 3 USB ports, eSata port and display port too.

The 13.4in, 16:9 screen will let you spy films and TV in 720p HD, which is just dandy for a laptop. The screen is billed as 'edge–to–edge', which apparently means no nasty bezel around the edge.

Just to round things off nicely you'll find Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi–Fi. Our UK sources at Dell say it's yours now, although US sources are indicating a one week wait. UK pricing is yet to be confirmed, with US punters paying $1,999. Stay tuned for our hands–on video and unboxing blog, coming soon.

Considering what iv just seen on Dell's website, as in the design and build quality. It's a good priced bespoke engineered piece of equipment. You don't compare an Austin Martin to a Nissan Micra, so why compare the Adamo to a Curry's Digital deal of the month bargain laptop?

Hmm, that's like saying an Acer Ferrari laptop will perform like the vehicle, whereas you're paying for the name. To launch a Windows PC at this price on the strength of unclear specs (as I type this) is a bit much. Sure, when I get 'under the hood' I might be awed by the engine, but I doubt whether I'll be able to drive it for twenty years and flog it for twice as much as I bought it.

Final Fantasy 7 for the PS1 now costs £100 at the very least to buy new. Electronics/Software are starting to hold their value and also increase in value if they are classed as iconic classics. And I think the likes of the Apples Macbook Air and the Dell Adamo, aka first generation aluminum fashion icon laptops will not only hold their value in 10 years time, but also increase in value. A Jaguar E Types can be out raced by a standard hatchback these days, yet people still pay £200 thousand pounds for them. It's not about what's under the hood, its about owning a magnificent piece of engineering. Despite it being old and obsolete a few years after its built. It's a statement of class and prestige.
