Blu–Ray drive set for Xbox 360

09 Oct 2008

Xbox 360It's been a good few months since the web was buzzing with news about Blu–Ray coming to the Xbox 360. And now, in spite of denials by suits in high places at Microsoft, it looks like we might finally be getting the hi–def standard on the now dirt cheap hub.

CVG is reporting that that Toshiba and Samsung have won a contract to build an external drive, just like the HD–DVD one which you could snag until Tosh's hi–def company went belly up earlier this year.

Cost–wise, we're looking at about $150 in the US, so expect it cost around £100 here in the UK. Microsoft could even announce the new addition for Christmas, although our money's on it being shown off at the big gadget showdown at CES next January.

As ever, stay tuned for more news as we get it.

Still can't see Microsoft going down that route.

Why? Licensing cost. I can't see Microsoft willing to paying a license fee for every blue-ray drive that will go into their competitor's purses that will be used to thwart MS dominance of the console market. At least to cement the no.2 position in the market.

Unlike Nintendo, both Sony and MS are losing money on every console sold and the continuing failure of MS Vista to capture the home and commercial markets, MS may take financial prudence of why chase good money after bad - especially when the [western] consumers are facing a trouble financial period.

Though the PS2 helped launched the DVD format into homes, 98% of PS2 buyers bought the console to play primarily games and not to watch films on.

This trend is continuing with Blu Ray.

There is no point in M$oft producing this. Even though its blu-ray, it will be as much a failure as the HD-DVD drive. 1. You'll only be able to use it for movies (which are way to costly anyways) and, 2. M$oft are bound to release a newer console with Blu-ray built in. They have to do this to compete with the PS3. Even then it wont be that good, because games won't be in Blu-ray for the Xbox. I don't think that anyone should buy one of these, and should wait until the next xbox is release which will (hopefully) support Blu-ray games. Effing Microsoft.

I was in John lewis earlier this year and whilst waiting for tv to come off the shelf 3 customers bought ps3's just to plat Blu rays. They were older couples one being pensioners with no intetionof using it for gaming as one said. I think you are very mislead soulsonic34. People at my local Sony centre bougt ps3's with new tv's and a couple of films in a promotion So in fact people are buying the ps3 JUST FOR FILMS
