Apple unveils new MacBook

14 Oct 2008

MacBookApple has just unveiled their new MacBook. It looks scarily like the newly released MacBook Pro, rocking iMac style and a multitouch glass trackpad, making navigating around Leopard even easier.

There's an LED backlit display, matching the Air and Pro, with the same 'unibody enclosure', aka, Brick, making it stronger and less likely to take a beating in your laptop bag.

NVIDIA graphics are also supported, making this a far better proposition as a gaming machine.

There are two new versions. A 13.3in edition with 2Ghz, Core 2 Duo, GeForce 9400M graphics, 160GB HDD and 2GB RAM. That'll cost £949 in the US. The second packs 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD and will cost £1,149.

And if you're after a cheap model? Well, Apple's keeping the low-end white MacBook and flogging it for £719. That's up on the old £699 cost. Ouch!

They're on sale tomorrow, so best get queuing. Want more? Check out the new MacBook Pro and the updated MacBook Air.

I think you will all agree that apple have really stung us price wise. I was waiting for the so called £500 mac book or maybe even the £600 pound macbook but to pay £949 for the new model is ridiculous. I see the Americans have once again being given a more affordable pricing structure. Lets hope the pound will get stronger by xmas so I can buy one over there. Thanks Jobsy what a huge let down. Very Cheesed off

Sneakyblade I'm with you. I was really up for a £599 (at least) model, but to see £719 I'm gutted. I'll be talking with them tomorrow and will let you know what they say. Cheers Joe

Apple really have lost the plot on this one though. £949 for a new model with specs equal to that of many £500 PC's seen around today. And if you have been on the online store, you will notice that instead of decreasing the price of the old one by the $100 equivalent, they have increased it by £20!

Just annoyed Joe. I love apple products and think the new gear looks great but why do we constantly get ripped off and why are the ipods a better price match and also the app store. Apple must think we arent heading towards a recession and most of us have a spare 1500 to spend on a luxury laptop. Microsoft, Dell, Asus, Sony etc must be delighted with the news. I cant see there being much of que outside my local Apple Store over the next few days. Sure I will have a look but I think my money might be better spent on something else. Regards Simon

TO say i am gutted is an understatement. I had the money ready and i was definately purchasing the new Macbook - Then i saw the price! I was expecting Apple to match prices of other NEtbooks and small laptops at around the £600 range - How wrong i was! I cant believe they have upped the price of the old Macbook, and then hiked the price of the new one up to a staggering £949!!! What a rip off - Apple doesnt deserve the business!

Tempted to Buy the old macbook for £799 160 gb Hard drive and 2.4gh processor. Surely this makes more sense than the new £949 effort. Fancy Graphics card is not an essential for me. Things like memory, processor and price are far more important.

It would have been my first mac ever, but apple's changed my mind(price)for me. I'm getting the Asus Eee PC S101 in brown it £500 pound cheaper and looks the busines

I've been a mac user for about 8 years, and 6 months ago, switched back to Windows, due to the fact that higher spec'd Windows laptops can be bought for half the cost of Apple. I'd read the various rumours on sites prior to yesterday's presentation, and was hopeful that a switch back to Apple would be viable, due to a sensible price drop and specification increase. Post presentation, I'm very disappointed with the new range of laptops, and it seems to me that Apple are totally unaware of their competition and the economic climate. Encouragingly, Apple announced a price drop on the white Macbook to $999, but I'm from England and this $999 price drop somehow translates into a cost of £719 ($1258 at todays exchange rate). This is actually £20 more expensive than the previous cheapest Macbook. I think that the aluminium Macbook looks lovely, but at a price of £949 ($1660), its nowhere near well specified enough to justify buying. Apple's presentation and new Macbook video are suggesting that we should all be excited about the all in one brick design and the new graphics chips. Personally, I don't care how its manufactured as long as its done responsibly. And at the current prices, having a new graphics chip is completely pointless. For the cheapest £719 white Macbook, you could buy a PS3, 26" LCD TV and a thin/light sub notebook with larger hard drive. I like the fact that the Macbook is aluminium and has a glass trackpad, but I'm not prepared to pay £300 more than I did for my last Macbook. Overall, the cost of the new Macbooks are going to restrict Apple's sales of them, in my opinion. I earn enough money to be able to buy one, and have historically been a fan of Apple's products, but I won't be buying one, unless a more realistic pricing structure is introduced. I resent the feeling that I'm being ripped off
