Apple to charge for iPad iOS 4 upgrade

20 Jul 2010

As if it wasn’t bad enough having to wait months to get the iOS 4 update on the iPad, Stuff.tv can reveal that Apple now plans to charge for the software bump.

Tableteers excited about getting multitasking and folders in the autumn tablet upgrade will now feel the sting of Apple’s cash-hungry tactic, historically seen applied to iPod Touch upgrades.

The top secret plans were whispered to Stuff by an anonymous source. There are no details of how much Apple will charge for the upgrade, but we’d expect in the region of £5.

Asked how sure they were about the forthcoming iOS 4 charge, our source replied, “Definite.” And we don’t think they’re wrong.

We've contacted Apple for a response on this and we'll update as soon as we get an answer. [UPDATE: Apple has responded... with a big, fat no comment. "Apple doesn't comment on rumours and speculation," is the official line. Or deny them, it seems.]

Glad you didn’t pick up an iPad now? Or angry that you did? Will you pay for the upgrade? Let loose in the comments box.

So they shifted their "accounting differently" ethos from the iPod Touch to the iPad. The amount(if it is £5) isn't an issue, just the principle. No doubt it'll be included as standard in every iPad they ship, once iOS4 is released, but will there be a price increase to those models as well? Or will loyal early adopters get morally shafted once again?

They are mad, i have been a loyal apple fan boy for a long time now and to be honest i feel a bit p....d of that they would do this, as was said in the previous comment its not the cost its the principle. I thought they were wrong when they did it with the touch and they are wrong to do it now.

Perhaps we'll get a free rubber band to put around the iPad after we upgrade to iOS4 :-)

No Apple don't plan to if they did it would go against the their own licensing agreements which state that the "next major iPad OS software release will be free for hardware owners"

They have to pay for the iPhlop 4 debacle now though

Not happy about paying, When the US senitor sent his open letter demanding that the Iphone 4 fix was free, I thought he was an idiot because nobody charges for updates on new devices. Will wait an see if it happens in the end, but at the end of the day I will not miss out on the extra features for the sake of £5

iPhlop 4 -hahahahahahahah. I'll never get sick of seeing that - Nice one Max. Apple actually charge to update the OS? Holy Guacamole. Why not charge if the Devotees are willing to pay? Most have more cash than sense anyhoo.

Rumors of Apple charging iPad owners for iOS 4 upgrade are false http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/07/20/apple_rumored_but_unlikely_to_charge_ipad_owners_for_ios_4_upgrade.html

i dont blame apple,i normally do, i think they will all go down this route. Android will do the same once they get to v3.0 ish im sure and Windows 7, well lets face it, MS give nothing away for free which is a shame because i really want to try it out when it comes out.

This article is another example of "throw stuff against the wall and see if it will stick" journalism. Could it be that the author is another Apple hater?

I'm not surprised at all. Saw it coming as soon as I found out the update was free for iPod touch.

i am NOT going to upgrade to the iphone 4, as the minute you hold it it you cant make a call. and now you have to pay to upgrade the ipad software. glad i didn't get one of those. Im lad apple shares are going down, hopefully they'll  sort them selves out and soon. Blackberry and a Dell for me.

@Craig Thomas have you actually tried the iPhone 4 or just being a ***? I have one, several friends & colleagues have them and none have experienced any issues whatsoever. People like you piss me off severely & you don't have a sodding clue what you're on about. The article about the iPad update charge is pure speculation to give people like you something to have in your life.   Go play with yourself! Sent from my iPad.

@CraigThomas - you are talking out of your ar*e about the iPhone 4.  I have had one since 25th June and not had a problem making calls and I use it everyday all over the country for work.  I bet you haven't even touched one let alone used one? So some units have had some issues, what new piece of tech doesn't and if the call functionality was so bad why are we iPhone 4 owners NOT all returning them.  I would as my phone is essential to my business and I would not put up with a phone that could not make calls! If you don't like it or apple fine but stop making foolish sweeping generalisations.  Sheesh!

When you say iPhlop, are you talking about  the phones that are selling as fast as they're making them? As for the patently untrue iPad nonsense, I don't know which is worse—a blog with journalistic pretences running the story or the half-wits who swallow it without question.

Jeez, sensitive bunch these Apple munchers aren't they. Someone reports something that may or may not be true about the iFad and there's tears before bedtime. Ho Hum. Coming from the organization that has built it's empire on controlled leaked rumours - it's hardly surprising that anyone believes a word they say. Like I said before, why is anyone bothered? You will all pay the money if it's true.If not, you can put your fiver towards an elastic band for your iPhlops ... Once again, nice one Max.

Well I have an iPad and I hope the story isn't true but as long as its not too much I guess I'd go for it. My daughter has a 3GS, the one that works, and she now only has one screen with folders on. It looks cool and I'd like that on my iPad as well as multiple exchange as I have MS exchange and google accounts. And guys, I have an xbox 360, and whilst it didnt go wrong ( for years anyway ), I couldn't deny there was a problem with RROD. Sensitive souls, bless. I think its been proven that the problem occurs on ALL iPhlops, it just depends on the signal where you are. The problem is Apple the company "everything changes, again". It did this time. I know they're falling off the shelves faster than chinese workers off tall buildings but I'm guessing some people would by empty boxes off Apple ( ethics are optional ).

I don't think you can accuse Stuff of being an Apple hater.

Ttreb - reacting to someone calling you stupid without good reason does not make you sensitive; it is perfectly natural. Jumping unprovoked onto any article containing baseless rumours about Apple just to disparage those who have a different view on the quality of some of their products, however, is beyond sensitive and into pathetic.  Grow some self-esteem.

Jeez, Sensitive and full of his own self importance. Why are you so upset Bob? Fad's, Phlops and bruised Apples. Take it easy boy. I'm sure Steve can hear your anguish and will erect his large screen of hope. To make everything better. Oh, just as long as he doesn't accuse all phone manufacturers of producing shoddy goods - like he did during his last big screen event.

This Steve Jobs hero-worship is simply an invention of people like you who want to find something to hate about Apple, but don't have anything that stands up to scrutiny.  So in its absence you have to make stuff up instead. Much like your version of what was said at the last Apple press conference.  Is English not your native language, or are you just an idiot? For the record - I do not much like Steve Jobs.  I don't even like Macs.  I do like the two iPhones I have owned, and I do like my iPad.  They work well, and have been good value for money.  Why does this disturb you - is it that you spent "230 notes" on a product you don't seem to have a good word for?

  22. Ttreb

I'm flattered that you have been researching me Bob. I couldn't really give two hoots if you like Steve Jobs or not and I'm completely indifferent concerning Apple toys. I'm happy that you like the two iPhlops you have owned and I'm also happy that you like your iFad and that it works work well. Well Done. Yes, I really hate the HP Mini. It's rubbish. But I don't pretend that something is good, when it obviously isn't.

  23. TheEponymousBob

No, but you do pretend some things are bad, when they obviously aren't.

The good news Bob is that noone needs your permission to slag Apple off. Its the Apple generated hype that makes people not so much hate Apple, but laugh at them and their minions when they fall flat on their egos. Its probably more to do with the MacSnobs historically always looking down on us poor Windows users. I'm not actually anti-Apple products, far from it. I've had an 3GS iPhone which my daughter now has. It was okay and she loves it. I have an iPad as well... even a classic and Apple TV. But when Jobsie gets up on stage and says one liners about flash, other products, multitasking (you don't need a task manager remember? it means you've already failed. Well you don't if you're not actually multitasking Steve). And starts lauding about how brilliant he is and here's the next greatest product ever, well Bob, when that goes wrong, when he is found wanting, all the Apple denyers come out like Scientologists at a 4th July company picnic shouting Nay Nay Nay, thats when the norms (apple haters to you) start to chuckle and post things. Even maybe a bit of trolling ( even I have been guilty occaisionally). Its like fishing without needing much bait and the great things is Bob, the more we fish the more you wriggle. I think I'll save my ground bait for the Linux priests

You say that like it's news to me.  Makes me wonder who's trolling whom...

He Bob, It's all part of the fun. Stop yer wriggling. My missus own's the iPhlop, an early iPud, an iTorch, a MacBrick and wants the iFad. She's learned to ignore the worm.

at the end of the day we are talking iPad iOS4 update costs.   £5 is a small price to pay, we are used to getting it free so thing we should.  I would pay £5 for it, as the iOS4 for the phone is great, multitasking has made a great improvement to the phone. People should remember, the apple lovers like apple as stuff works (iPhone4 issue taken out of that comment, but I don't have an problem) and shared across devices, apps on phone and pad, music easy on pod, phone and pad and apple TV if you so wish. Then a result is you have a vested interest in staying with them. Plus their stuff is just cool.
