Apple iPad sees 120,000 pre-orders on first day

Apple iPad

While a large proportion of Stuff.tv readers admitted to being disappointed with Apple's iPad announcement, the tablet went up for pre-order in the States on Friday to huge interest.

Victor Castroll, analyst with Valcent Financial Group and member of the AAPL Sanity Board, has been doing some calculations based on order numbers, and is estimating 51,000 people pre-ordered during the first two hours.

More calculations suggest that nearly 120,000 iPads were sold during the first day on the whole.

How did they come to that conclusion? The Apple Store saw 124,596 orders on Friday, compared to the average of 16,500 orders on a normal day. Deducted that from the total, and then multiply the figure by 1.1 (the average number of iPads ordered per customer), and you've got 119,987 iPads. Wowsers.

It does seem customers have been opting for the cheaper option though, with the Wi-fi only version outselling the 3G version by around two to one, while pre-orders were almost evenly split between 16, 32 and 64GB versions.

We're just waiting for the April UK launch now, which we've heard could take place at the new flagship Covent Garden store, as long as it's built in time...

Will you be buying when it lands here, and if so, which version will you be going for? Let us know below.

Ye, I'll probably buy it. Wifi version 16 or 32gb. Even though it's not the tablet I wanted.

I would, but when it launches at £499 as I expect, that's 1/3 of the cash towards a MacBook Pro that I can use for Steam, Logic Pro and.... *shock* Flash content.

Good point TXRBIGDAZ although Flash is a moot point nowadays with the emergence of HTML5.

    A good demo of HTML5=http://mugtug.com/sketchpad/

iPad for xmas or save for a MacBook Pro?

Windows is a terrible OS and has pushed me to far with it's cliches which is why I want a Mac but an iPad 3G would be great for watching TV Programmes and films in-car. Plus, Internet surfing on the go would no longer require me to choose between small screen or an ugly, heavy s**ty windows laptop.

What should I pick? A brilant portable internet tablet or a decent, beautiful and powerful laptop?
