80GB PS3 hitting UK 27 August – for £299
Good news, console fans. Sony has just confirmed the 80GB PS3 is finally coming to the UK on 27 August. And it will cost £299, the same as the current 40GB version. In a statement today, suits at Sony said,” "We have been listening to our customers and are pleased to be able to answer one of their key requests.”There’s no chance of picking up a 40GB on the cheap though, Sony has said it’ll be phasing it out in due course. Rubbish! And in other bad news, the 80GB will come with the same feature set as the pared down model. So limited USB connectivity and no backwards compatibility with PS2 games.Still, with the download store hitting the PS3, we’ll need all that extra space. Will you be finally plumping for one? Let us know in the comments section.Essentials 80GB PS3 Price: £299 On sale: 27 August Contact: Sony

They should be focusing on getting good games out quicker. I have wii/ps3 and 360, only my 360 gets regular use, why does it take sooooo long to get there decent games out eg wipeout, killzone 2,little big planet. By the time there AAA games come out itll be time for ps4 and xbox 720.

One word... "Pointless" What a waste of time! We ALL know you can swap out the existing HD inside the PS3 with a generic 3rd party HD from the shops, and choose WHATEVER size YOU want anyway. Let people just do this instead of releasing various "versions" of the same console where the only ACTUAL difference is the HD size. I'm what people might call a "Sony Fan Boy", BUT i'll tell you what... I DON'T have a PS3. I want one. BUT, I DON'T want a cut down cheaper version of what was originally released. I wish I had been quicker to get a 60GB when they were released now, but i'm too late. I've been holding out and holding out for another release of a PS3, with DualShock 3, and a larger HD, AND extra USB's and BACKWARDS COMPATIBILTY. Seems like i'll NEVER own a PS3 at this rate. Oh well. I'll do without. Cheers Sony. NOT!

they can probably put 120gb hard drives in there for only 10pounds more production cost. i believe they should have just had a price cut in Europe, considering you can almost buy 2 ps3s in America for the same price as the 40gb version over here (UK)

I'd like to echo the comments of Rissy above. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME! I'd love to buy a nice shiny new PS3 but I'm not interested and a cut down cheaper version of the original! Like Rissy I should have moved quicker on the 60GB version. There you go. Take a look at the PlayStation 3 80 GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Pack available in the US. That's what we want. I don't believe Sony is listening to its potential customers at all. If they are they're only acting on the bits that suit their marketing dept.

Hopefully we will see a price drop but in the pre-owned market. I can't wait for that. Ecspecially when it means I can finally get my younger brother one. Shame backwards compatability didn't make triumphant return though.

GET A COMPLETELY FREE PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) http://www.gimme-it-free.co.uk It is a completely legit offer and you don't have to part with a single penny. Don't believe me? Check out the site and watch the BBC Newsnight report and look at other proof to see how and why it works. http://www.gimme-it-free.co.uk

I have the original 60Gb PS3 and I am so glad I got it when I did, it was a touch and go decision as games were, and still are to a smaller extent, behind the Xbox but I had quite a few PS2 games. However, I wasn't aware you could upgrade the HDD in the unit, is this also applicable to the 60Gb version, could I really put a 120Gb unit in? Why are Sony taking this approach, don't they realise the market segment they are losing by excluding those with PS2 games?

a step backwards by sony as a "fan boy", i have recently found it hard to justify buying anything sony.. it just doesn't work as well as it should, sure it looks good, but i'd rather have something that works really well. i have great faith in the PS4, i think they'd have learned their lesson by then : )
