Next Big Thing – folding laptops

14 Apr 2011

Er, don't all laptops already fold?
Alright clever clogs. Yes, of course all laptops fold – but what if they could do more than just open and close? This Fujitsu Lifebook X2 concept is all about the multi-fold.

Multi-fold?
Unlike a regular laptop which opens and closes around a single hinge, the Lifebook X2 has three, allowing it to fold into quarters, concertina-style. When fully unfurled there's a QWERTY keyboard, but snap it into half-fold mode and a touchscreen keyboard pops up.

Surely you can't fold a screen in half?
Actually, you can. Polymer Vision made a foldable E Ink screen for its Readius ebook. Don't expect to see one on the shelves soon, though – the company went bust in 2009. But foldable screens are very much a reality; we should see some knocking about in the latest tech soon. Meanwhile check out these images of the Fujitsu Lifebook X2 concept. And try not to drool.

Hmmm although I think it's a very imaginative I think its to much of a compromise. Netbooks are small enough. Tablets have filled other niches. Not sure what this gives me over other products??!

    Envy?

I can see why this is concept - it's interesting as an idea. But in this form it looks clumsy and heavy - I don't really see what 'problems' this would address in its current configuration.
