Xbox 360 is 2011's top-selling console
The Xbox 360 was 2011's top-selling console, with Microsoft shifting 2.7 million more than nearest rival Sony's PlayStation 3.
According to NPD sales data, Christmas was also good to the Xbox 360, with 1.7 million of the consoles flying off the shelves in December alone.
There's no sign of buyers holding out for the Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4 as sales of both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 increased in 2011 compared to 2010.
There might be plenty of time to enjoy a new "old" console as Sony has said we won't be seeing the PS4 at E3 this year, and we don't yet know if the next Xbox will show itself either.

Thought I'd pull you up on your mistake above. Playstation 4 sales couldn't increase in 2011 it hasn't been released yet haha. Can i have a job at stuff?

They didn't use the word 'Worldwide' once in this article, they simply stated that regarding American sales the Xbox had outshone Playstation last year.
