Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 Smart Case takes a cue from Apple's iPad 2 cover

19 Jul 2011

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Samsung might as well have just run up to Apple in the street and asked for its autograph. Or worse. The new Smart Case for its Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet is undeniable similar to Apple’s Smart Cover from nearly every single angle imaginable – a resemblance that we’re sure will have Apple's lawyers positively chomping at the bit.

Given the Tab 10.1’s lack of built-in magnets, the Smart Case attaches with the aid of a clip-on back cover. To be fair to Samsung, a single-side tablet cover doesn't present millions of design options and we like the look of the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 accessory. Whether it was strictly necessary to show it off in that distinctive cobalt blue is another matter.

UPDATE: Well, that didn't take long. Looks like Sammy's top brass either heard the lawyers coming or got cold feet. The product's been pulled from the official Samsung site.

Family ties earn this Smart Cover knock-off a Samsung certification and a place on their store shelves (9 to 5 Mac)

Yes, it’s a Smart Cover knockoff for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. But the interesting part is that the CEO of the company behind the copycat accessory, Sang-yong Kim, is apparently the nephew of Samsung chairman Kun-hee Lee. Given that Apple is suing Samsung for “slavishly” copying its products, Lee might want to send Kim a memo titled “Not Helping.”
