Chinese companies scrapping for the job of building Google’s next Nexus phone

Let the fight for Google's flagship smartphone commence

Google is looking for a partner to help it manufacture its new Nexus phone, and all signs are pointing to China.

Lenovo, Xiaomi, Huawei and LG have all shown interest in working with Google, but with the American tech giant looking to build connections in China, the Korea-based LG may not stand a chance. LG’s new G4 certainly impressed us, but it doesn’t look like it’s enough to persuade Google. It’s trying to establish a stronger presence across China, and partnering with one of the Chinese tech companies will help it find new production partners.

This certainly won’t be a choice made lightly and it won’t be an easy one, as all of these companies have plenty of help to give. Google sold Motorola to Lenovo, so they’ll know firsthand what they can do. Huawei has made big inroads in the smartphone world this year with their new flagship phone the P8, so they’ll have caught Google’s eye. Xiaomi may not have to prove anything, as Hugo Barra, their vice president of global sales is a former Google executive.

We can’t tell you exactly who’s making the phone with Google quite yet, but stay tuned for more news.
