Toshiba drops the glasses on big screen 3DTVs
Small screen, glasses-free 3D is old hat. But the transition to bigger screened 3DTVs has not been so easy, with poor viewing angles and prohibitive pricing making it an unattractive proposition for regular folk and – by extension – manufacturers.Luckily, we live in a cut-throat world of technology where fortune (allegedly) favours the brave. And the brave party striking out into big-screen, goggle-free 3DTVs is Toshiba. The Japanese company promises us Europeans we’ll be laying our naked eyes on its third-dimensional wares somewhere between April this year and March 2012.Tosh is showing off its 56in and 65in prototypes at CES right now, and we’ll be doing our best to swing by for a first impression. It reckons a combination of LED backlighting, 4k2k resolution panels, its own CEVO processing engine and some bespoke imaging tech will mean wide viewing angles and ace quality picture. As the fight between passive 3D and active shutter heats up, could Tosh creep up on both and stage the tech coup of the century? Or does it just sound too good to be true? Bearing in mind that Tosh is keeping mum on pricing, we’re holding our judgement for now.All stories from CES
