Polaroid classic instant film cameras to make a comeback

Polaroid One

Polaroid classic instant film cameras are to make a comeback, after it was announced last year that production was to be stopped.

When the company closed, the license to the brand was bought by Summit Global, which released its first digital version of the traditional instant camera, the Polaroid Two, earlier this year.

However, the company says it will be complementing its digital offerings by bringing back a range of original cameras and film products sometime in 2010, including the Polaroid 600 instant film and the easy-to-use Polaroid One.

That’s not to say Summit Global plans to ditch its digital Polaroid platforms. The company has also announced that it plans to bring a new instant digital camera to market – the Polaroid Three – that will produce 4”x3” while you wait.

We’ll be keeping you updated on this, but let us know what you think to Polaroid’s comeback below and be sure to check out our hands on video with the Polaroid Two to see what we thought.

I am a firm devotee of 'analogue'/film photography but I think its bonkers to bring back the Polaroid system; the Polaroid pictures were never on par with conventional processed film, and it was considerably more expensive and limiting in size of print. And, as the camera contained the process and print system onbaord it made them quite bulky. In  the end their use was largely limited to ID pictures but they were superceeded there by digital devices which also enabled the image to be stored on file in a database.

It might be feasible if they made the camera a digital capture device and made it possible to edit and crop the images onboard before printing them off. But again, you can do that with most digital cameras and a photo printer.

Producing the film for those who still want it for legacy devices is a different matter. If there is sufficient demand then OK, but I think it would be pointless to bring back the old format of Polaroid camera.

why?  Because you can manipulate polaroid photographs before they dry (great if you are arty).  I want em back cos film is really expensive (if you can find it!!)
