It’s Windows Mobile, Jim, but not as we know it.
While cruising the galaxy in the Stuff starship today, we happened upon the HTC Star Trek, a wafer-thin phone with aspirations to being the next Motorola RAZR (which, as Top 10 readers will know, is the BenQ-Siemens EF81).
As the Register points out, the Star Trek has popped up on e-tailer Expansys’ site - branded as the QTek 8500 - and could be teleporting to a letterbox near you in three weeks’ time. We’ve received an invite to the official launch on Monday 8th May, so Expansys’ expected on-sale date of 13th May sounds about right.
The main attraction is, of course, the styling and waspish dimensions – it weighs a feathery 99g and, at 15.88mm, is slightly thicker than the RAZR V3.
The specs register as average on our gadget scanner, with Windows Mobile 5.0 running the engine and Bluetooth and MicroSD doing the honours for connectivity. Denizens of contiental Europe will also be able to use EDGE, the faster-than-GPRS tech, though that’ll be as useful as an inflatable dartboard to us Brits – EDGE is unlikely to ever launch here. Rounding matters out is a distinctly old skool 1.3MP camera.
The HTC Star Trek’s first real world incarnation as the QTek 8500 will toll you for £360 contract-free.
