Kindle for Mac app launches, Amazon promises Kindle for iPad

Kindle for Mac

Following on from the iPhone, PC and BlackBerry versions, Amazon has announced the Kindle for Mac app is now available, with an iPad version on its way as well.

The Kindle reader app is a free way of reading Kindle books on other devices than a Kindle – and you don't even have to own a Kindle to use it.

Using the app, you can buy and download books from the Kindle Store and read them in full colour, with features coming soon such as full text search and the ability to create notes and highlights.

Of course if you do have a Kindle, the app will use Amazon's Whispersync technology to save and synchronise your bookmarks and last read page between devices, and will allow you to pick up books you've purchased, complete with notes and highlights, using either device as well.

There was no other news on when we can expect the Kindle for iPad version to be released, but you can pick up the Kindle for Mac app now from the Amazon website.

Give it a go and give us your thoughts on it below. Will an iPad version be competition for Apple's iBooks?

It has failed all ready. If you click onto ''shop in kindle store'' within the program, it launchers Amazon.com, apposed to Amazon.co.uk, therefore your user name and password for your Amazon account becomes invalid as your forced to use the American site and not the UK's.

This wouldn't happen on itunes. Simple stuff Amazon get it sorted!
