Space trading game Elite returns – on Kickstarter

Back in the 1980s, as far as kids were concerned, the main use for the school's BBC Micro computers was playing space trading game Elite. Now the venerable space sim is set for a revival, with creator David Braben turning to Kickstarter to fund sequel Elite: Dangerous.

Like the original game, Elite: Dangerous places the player in the cockpit of a spaceship in a procedurally-generated universe – albeit one significantly larger than the original game's 22K allowed for. You're free to choose your own path – space trader, pirate, bounty hunter, explorer – and spend your credits on upgrading your ship.

This time around, though, you won't be the only one flitting about the galaxy. Yes, Elite: Dangerous will feature a multiplayer component, with your chums joining you in a "seamless, lobby-less way."

Elite: Dangerous is pencilled in for a March 2014 release date, with a – rather ambitious – Kickstarter goal of £1.25m. Hopefully there are a lot of children of the 80s with fond memories of huddling around the school's BBC Micro out there.
