5 of the best football apps

14 Aug 2012

The new football season is upon us, meaning nine months of weekend football viewing. But don’t simply lounge around like a Micky Quinn-sized couch potato while you watch – these apps can enhance your experience no end.

live football on tv

Live Football On TV

(iOS)
This is an app that does what it says on the tin: i.e. telling you which matches are live on TV. You can browse by channel, by competition, or by your favourite teams, with details provided up to a few days in advance in the free basic edition. In-app purchases can let you see farther ahead in the schedules. It’ll slot any fixtures you don’t want to miss into your iPhone’s calendar.

sky bet app

Sky Bet

(iOS)
While we don’t encourage reckless gambling (obviously), this app is ideal if you think a little flutter adds something to a football match. There’s live betting on all the current and upcoming matches (plus other sports), and football accumulators can be easily set up through the Coupons section. You get £10 of betting free when you sign up.

barclays football app

Barclays Football

(iOS)
The official app from Premier League sponsors Barclays, this is a veritable treasure trove of information, whether you’re after news stories, footie-related Twitter trends, team and player stats, fixtures or results. There’s even a Facebook-linked chat mode. The simple interface makes it easy to navigate.

fourfourtwo stat zone app

FourFourTwo Football Stats Zone

(iOS)
Stuff’s sister publication might be the reason the office smells of Deep Heat and orange segments, but they turn out a very nifty app for the hardcore soccer stat-fancier. Powered by Opta’s terrifying banks of data, it breaks down match and player stats at an incredible level of detail – and all the more unbelievably it does so live (hitting the refresh button updates everything). While the app is free, you’ll have to pay £1.49 to access information on the coming 2012/13 season.

zeebox app

zeebox

(iOS, Android)
The social viewing app works with all TV programmes, including football coverage. Once you’ve told zeebox what you’re watching, you’ll be bombarded with a tweet timeline of relevant comments, while players and events will pop up as tappable, realtime-generated “zeetags” that filter down the updates. And if your zeebox-using friends are watching the same match, you can live chat straight from the app.
