Apple plotting 3D iMac?

It's a banker that Apple will be giving the iMac a facelift at MacWorld in January, offering up LED screens, faster processors and even, whisper it, a

MacRumors has uncovered a string of new patents, showing off Cupertino's plans for 3D desktops. Dubbed a "multidimensional application environment", the drawings show a number of surfaces which can be manipulated and used separately to show different information.

Icons would get a makeover to appear in 3D, giving the desktop a completely new feel. Apparently even weather icons would cause other ones to fall into shadow if the sun was shining. All cosmetic, but swanky nonetheless.

Obviously, these plans are years off, and probably won't show up in Snow Leopard, due to be unveiled in January alongside the new iMac.
