Motorway Walks and Breaks
Get off the road and stretch your legs with this app, which pinpoints interesting walks within five miles of motorway exits. Each dog-friendly walk lasts about 30-45 minutes – and takes in a pub or other eatery along the way, for that all-important pit stop.
Free (iOS/Android/Windows Phone/Nokia/BlackBerry)
This location-based search app has just updated with a Petrol Search function, using data from Whatgas.com to serve up current petrol prices in your area. With fuel prices constantly on the up, it's a handy way to avoid your motor burning through all the cash in your wallet.
If you're looking for a navigation app that replicates the experience of a shop-bought satnav, TomTom's iOS app is hard to beat. You get Daily Map Share updates and TomTom's IQ Routes feature – which tweaks your time of arrival based on real-world data collected from other drivers – plus (for a price) the HD Traffic bolt-on. It'll cost you, though – the UK and Ireland version will set you back £50, while the Western Europe version is £60.
GPS Navigation 2 by Skobbler
If the TomTom app is a bit pricey for you, this £1.50 app offers up global online and offline navigation – though you'll need to be in range of a data connection to download maps (sourced from OpenStreetMap). Alternatively, you can download specific maps from £2.50 a pop to use in offline mode. You'll also get the usual GPS features including points of interest and co-ordinate based navigation – plus the option to send your location to your friends over e-mail and Facebook.
Skobbler also has a free app, GPS Navigation, for Android.
Highways Agency Live Traffic Info
If you don't want to shell out for a route finding app with traffic updates, this free app will provide you with all the latest traffic info for motorways and A roads, direct from the Highways Agency. And if you're not rocking an iThing, the Highways Agency has a mobile site that'll furnish you with the same information.
