The same slim-but-not-too-slim 7.5mm aluminium build, small-but-not-too-small 7.9in screen and incredibly sharp 2048 x 1536 resolution. There&rsquo;s no noticeable tweaks to the iPad Mini&rsquo;s screen tech. Whites are still printer paper-pure, contrast is excellent and colours are mostly accurate and appealing. We say mostly because there are still a few hues, reds in particular, that both the iPad Air and even tablets like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review">Kindle Fire HDX</a> pick up that the iPad Mini misses. Still, it&rsquo;s not something every user will spot and colour reproduction is more than good enough for Netflix and the web. If you need a tablet for working with images, we&rsquo;d recommend the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review">iPad Air 2 </a>instead.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPad Mini 3 isnt treated to the same anti-reflective coating and display lamination technique seen on the Air 2 either&nbsp;- a small difference but one that makes the gap between the two iPad models bigger. In terms of aesthetics, both the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 get a new gold model to join the silver and space gray options.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">Apple iPad Mini 2 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>Power and performance remains the same too, that is very, very good. This tablet is as smooth as we&rsquo;ve seen from Apple, with no stutters or lag. Still, spec fans will be disappointed that the iPad Mini 3 misses out on the A8X processor and M8 motion co-processor, the brains behind the iPad Air 2. In time, we might see more games and video editing apps that make use of this extra grunt. For now, we&rsquo;re not complaining too much.&nbsp;</p> <p>For stamina, at least, the iPad Mini 3 just about matches the bigger Cupertino tablet. Like its predecessor, it lasts just shy of the iPad Air&rsquo;s ten-hour battery life. For a tablet, that&rsquo;s very respectable and&nbsp;means only having to charge the iPad Mini every other day at most.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="iPad on iPad. Well that&#39;s no longer a problem, as the Mini 3&#39;s joined the fingerprint-recognition party. It&rsquo;s faster and more accurate than when it was first introduced and still just as easy to set up.&nbsp;</p> <p>So what can you do with it? First up, replace your pin code to unlock the iPad, a feature Samsung has added to smartphones such as the Galaxy S5, albeit in a slightly less elegant implementation. Then there&rsquo;s fingerprint authentication for iTunes and App Store purchases, which is a nice timesaver that lets you wave bye-bye to entering your password every time.</p> <p>Apple Pay, only available in the US for now, adds support for lots more online transactions&nbsp;- including booking Uber cabs. It&rsquo;s worth noting that, unlike the iPhone 6, you wont be paying via NFC in shops with your Mini 3. To be fair to Apple, pressing an iPad Mini 3 to a contactless card reader would look a bit ridiculous.&nbsp;</p> <p>As for <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ios-81-released-bringing-apple-pay-continuity-and-various-fixes/news">iOS 8.1</a>, you can download this on to your iPad Mini 2 now, so it&rsquo;s not much of a selling point for the new model. The additions are welcome though, both in terms of ironing out bugs in iOS 8 and adding long-hyped productivity features such as syncing files, links and messages&nbsp;with Yosemite (on MacBooks and iMacs)&nbsp;via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/imac/how-answer-calls-and-messages-across-your-mac-ipad-and-iphone-continuity/feature">Continuity</a>&nbsp;when logged into iCloud.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ios-8/review"> iOS 8 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="Touch ID set up takes seconds " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad%20mini%20review%20finger.jpg?1414202520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Looks like iOS 7 but lots more functionality " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad%20mini%20review%20iOS.jpg?1414202520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" title="The iPad still has the best optimised apps " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-mini-3-review-apps.png?1414202520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> If you want more than 32GB, you need an iPad Mini 3 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>That&rsquo;s right. In&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/better-or-worse-apple-s-ipad-line-shows-its-now-very-different-company/feature">another business-minded move</a>, the Mini 3 skips the 32GB model altogether.</p> <p>It is available in 16GB (US$399), 64GB (US$499) and 128GB (US$599) sizes, with on average an extra US$130 (RM430) for 3G/4G capabilities. Of course that makes the 64GB model look like a sensible option: if you&#39;re spending US$399 (RM1310) on 16GB, why not go the whole hog and spend US$499 (RM1640) for four times the storage?&nbsp;</p> <p>Essentially, if you can limit yourself to 32GB or less of storage, then buy an iPad Mini 2. Apple has offered a 4:3 aspect ratio on every iPad to date, which even on the original model&rsquo;s release was at odds with the then-iPhone&rsquo;s 3:2 display. By contrast, most Android tablets have aped smartphones, which have tended towards 9:16 &mdash; a TV-like 16:9 aspect ratio in landscape.</p> <p>For a smartphone, such displays make sense. Primarily designed to be used in portrait, you want a display that shows plenty of content, and where everything&rsquo;s relatively easily accessible with a thumb or two. Tablets, however, have very different use cases, which are often closer in nature to what you&rsquo;d do with a notebook.</p> <p>In landscape, widescreen tablets are perfectly suited to video playback, but their shortcomings become clearer elsewhere. If you&rsquo;re using an on-screen keyboard, the area remaining for content is reduced to a sliver; when using the device in portrait, it doesn&rsquo;t suit books and comics, or creating documents intended for paper output. Even browsing websites on a 16:9 tablet can feel sub-optimal, content not having room to breathe in portrait, but needing regular scrolling in landscape.</p> <p>In 4:3/3:4, these problems disappear. The result is more room to work, and a more natural set-up for creating and consuming most content. There are compromises &mdash; black bars above and below widescreen video, and games having a squarer viewport; but even the latter can be beneficial in strategy titles or shooters where enemies are coming at you from all angles.</p> <p>Microsoft headed somewhat in this direction with the Surface Pro 3&rsquo;s 3:2 display; but Google&#39;s Nexus 9 gets you 4:3 with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 &mdash; identical to the iPad, and at a higher resolution than on the iPad Air, due to the Nexus 9&rsquo;s smaller physical dimensions.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yYHY3MFiq1o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 9" alt="Nexus 9" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-9-lifestyle_0.jpg?1413697329" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why the Nexus 6’s giant display is just too much </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/google/7-things-you-need-know-about-google-nexus-6/news">As per our write-up</a>, the Nexus 6 is essentially an embiggened Moto X, with a display that&rsquo;s a tiny smidge off of six inches. Its pixel count is almost absurdly high; the phone&#39;s 2560 x 1440 resolution means that there are more pixels packed into this smartphone than the Nexus 9 tablet. It all feels a bit excessive &mdash; another example of smartphones trying to one-up each-other on size; if this keeps up, at some point a manufacturer will realise with a shock that their new device doesn&rsquo;t actually fit through the door of the average family home.</p> <p>The argument in favour of larger displays is clear: you potentially get to see more content on the screen, or the same content but bigger. Such devices can in certain cases be more pleasurable to use, and if you&rsquo;re the kind of person who reckons you can use a smartphone as your sole computer, you&rsquo;re going to want a display larger than the tiny viewport on the likes of an iPhone 5s.</p> <p>The problem is <em>everything else</em>. In order to keep the visual fidelity high, Google&rsquo;s had to make the screen 2K. This heavily impacts on all kinds of things: it drains the battery more quickly; it makes the device pricier than it otherwise had to be; and it also potentially leads to upsampling issues when viewing 1080p content (although probably not quite to the same level as the iPhone 6 Plus under some circumstances, which may merrily upsample content to 2208 x 1242 before downsampling it again for the 1080p display&mdash;bonkers).</p> <p>Coupled with this, you end up with a flagship phone that&rsquo;s simply too big and unwieldy for many &mdash; a modern incarnation of a Dom Joly prop, but on which you can play Angry Birds. We don&rsquo;t know yet if it&rsquo;ll be prone to bendgate, but whereas Google appears to have primarily thought about the user experience with the Nexus 9, the Nexus 6 seems to merely be yet another case of &lsquo;mine&rsquo;s bigger than yours&rsquo;.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/google/google-nexus-6/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 6 preview &ndash; everything you need to know</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wk-PY2dBKaA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="782" height="586" title="Nexus 6" alt="Nexus 6" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-6-charging_2.jpg?1413697329" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature#comments Google iPad Nexus 6 Nexus 9 Smartphones Tablets Fri, 17 Oct 2014 12:07:04 +0000 Elissa Loi 1450768 at http://www.stuff.tv Pay US$100 for Touch ID on the iPad Mini 3? Navigating through iOS 8 was predictably jerk-free, and apps and web pages loaded in a snap.</p> <p>There are no apps yet built that really test the limits of the A8X, which is supposedly 40% faster than the A7 in the iPad Air and has 2.5x the graphics performance, but we did see a glimpse of additional capability: with both the A7-equipped iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 running&nbsp;<em>Asphalt 8&nbsp;</em>next to each other &ndash; and it looking pretty damn spiffy in either case &ndash; it was clear that the Air&rsquo;s rendering was that bit smoother. When there are more games that make the most of iOS 8&rsquo;s &lsquo;Metal&rsquo; graphics architecture, and the processing grunt in the Air 2, we&rsquo;re sure the difference will be even more stark.</p> <p>The other key performance figure, battery life, is unchanged: Apple says you&rsquo;ll get at least 10 hours of browsing time out of the iPad Air 2.
