So while celebrating the fact your iPhone 6 is now precisely 0.7 mm thinner than an iPhone 5s, you can fume that the camera sticks out a bit, making the device wobble when set down on a table.

A flush design at the back would have been more aesthetically pleasing, maybe even made the battery slightly bigger, and would have meant Apple’s website and photography teams wouldn’t have had to clumsily try to pretend a camera bulge didn't exist. Tablets like the Sony Xperia Z2 are so worryingly thin that they actually have a slight flex; not only does this make an expensive piece of hardware feel worryingly fragile, but also it makes it less comfortable to hold.

The new Dell Venue 8 7000 Series is even skinnier, its 6 mm beating the Xperia Z2 by 0.4 mm and the comparatively chunky iPad mini by over 1 mm. Naturally, headlines have been grabbed, for the eleven seconds that Dell’s device remains the thinnest tablet that ever thinned, while pretty much no-one wonders whether it might have been better to add some extra heft to boost the battery and speakers.

But it looks like thin is here to stay. Intel’s Chris Walker has argued in favour of doubling down on the concept of super-skinny tablets, and dreams about ditching bulky ports for charging, data transfer and peripherals. Pretty soon, mobile devices will be so thin ninja will be able to use them as weapons. There’s silver black, a lurid greenish-yellow (‘Lime’, apparently) and a deep salmon pink. In the hand it has a nice premium feel - perhaps a little more chunky than the Z1 (it’s a millimetre thicker, at 9.5mm), but solid and well-made. It has the same waterproofing, with an IP55 and IP58 rating.

The 4.3in screen is 720p rather than the Z1’s 1080p, but in the smaller frame you’ll be pushed to notice the lower pixel density. It uses the same Triluminos and X-Reality tech to provide natural colours and fill in the missing pixels in video, and it looks very nice indeed.

Unlike the HTC One Mini or the Galaxy S4 Mini (or, for that matter, the iPhone 5C), the Z1 Compact isn’t hampered by budget specs. It has the same Snapdragon 800 chip, the same 2GB RAM, the same Category 4 LTE (4G) and the same 20.7MP camera as its more trouser-troubling stablemate. Like the Z1 you can add 64GB storage via a microSD card (there’s 16GB onboard), and like the Z1 it packs some very well-made camera apps. Although we haven’t had time to run it down, the battery is worth a mention: at 2300mAh, it has a much bigger fuel tank than the One Mini (1800mAh) or the S4 Mini (1900mAh).

Video ID/URL:

<!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. The screen quality is crystal clear with well saturated colours similar to AMOLED-based displays.

Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, the Z Ultra uses the latest Google Android 4.2 operating system.

Apart from that, the device is ready for water and dust. Better still, no more silly rubber flaps over the headphone jack.

It also comes with NFC connectivity, a large 3000mAh battery and a combo of 2-megapixel camera for the front and 8-megapixel at the back. Curiously enough, there is no flash of any sort for the back module. Interestingly, Sony mentioned that the focus was on the screen rather than the camera.

Clearly, the industry is moving in two directions - bringing mini versions of flagship devices to the masses, and upsized models for movie buffs who want a gorgeous screen to view when they are on the go. Question is, should we call such smartphones phablets, or simply label them as tablets, when they cross the 7in tablet barrier? Not only does it make Samsung’s flagship look like a cheap toy with its tempered glass build and thoughtful design details, the Xperia Z also ups the ante with serious specs: a pin-sharp 5in 1080p screen, 4G, a quad-core Snapdragon brain and Jelly Bean 4.2 due just after launch. Sure, you may not feel the full benefit of those stonking figures right now, but you will have a lightning-fast, future-proof beast of a handset.

But it’s not all about the spec wars. Its battery-boosting Stamina mode will make sure the Xperia Z outlasts its rivals, and with a tough pavement-proof screen, intuitive compact-cam style photo controls and a waterproof body, it’s clear that Sony’s really looking out for the everyday gadgeteer.
