Nokia&rsquo;s higher-end Lumia Windows Phones are plastic and quite glorious, as are the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-5c/review">iPhone 5c</a> and new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/desire-eye/htc-desire-eye/review">HTC Desire Eye</a>, but the Galaxy S range has always fallen a little short of expected standards. While the latter would be a bold, memorable move, it&rsquo;d probably push the S6&rsquo;s manufacturing costs a little too high, and to be honest at this point we&rsquo;d be happy with metal rather than another year of uninspiring plastic.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d also expect to see some measure of dust- and waterproofing. The S5 is sealed against the elements, and its successor is sure to follow. It might even kick things up a notch so you can take it even deeper &lsquo;neath the waves: bumping the spec to IP68 from the S5&rsquo;s IP67 rating would mean you could completely immerse the phone for a prolonged period of time without water getting inside. We think the chances of a 2K screen making its way into the S6 are very high indeed, especially as the Note 4&#39;s 2K screen proves that Samsung&#39;s got the capability to churn them out.</p> <p>The screen will probably get a slight size bump too, but maybe not too much. It wouldn&#39;t want to compete with its Note 4 brother, after all.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d personally be more than happy with 2K and 5.2in &ndash; going any bigger risks making the phone too big for the hands of normal folks and going sharper strikes us as pixel overkill on a screen this size, especially as more pixels require more power and put more strain on the battery.</p> <p><strong>Update 05/12/14:&nbsp;</strong>According to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.sammobile.com/2014/12/01/exclusive-next-galaxy-s-flagship-to-be-called-galaxy-s6-galaxy-s6-edge-variant-coming-too/" target="_blank">Sam Mobile</a>&#39;s sources, Samsung will also release a Galaxy S6 Edge variant which will have - you guessed it - a curved screen, fashioned after the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung-galaxy-note-edge/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note Edge</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>This wouldn&#39;t be the craziest thing in the world given that Samsung has already shown it can produce such a device, but given the higher price of the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung-galaxy-note-edge/review" target="_blank">&nbsp;Note Edge</a>, we don&#39;t expect the curved screen variant will be pushed as the main product. If it even exists at all that is.</p> <p><strong>Update 08/12/14:&nbsp;</strong>The Galaxy S6&#39;s specs have leaked online, courtesy of an AnTuTu benchmark spotted by Chinese site cnmo. According to the leak, the S6 will land with a 5.5in, 2560 x 1440 screen. While the resolution was expected, the size bump up to 5.5 inches is rather drastic, given that the current Note 4&#39;s screen is only slightly larger at 5.7 inches.</p> <p>This suggests that the Note 5 could hit the 6in mark, following in the footsteps of devices like the Nexus 6, but we&#39;ll have to wait and see.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Samsung match LG with a 2K screen? Both are quad-core, 64-bit and more powerful on paper than any smartphone processor at the time of writing, and we&rsquo;d be pretty happy to see either of them on the S6 (they seem likely to require more power than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 801, however, which could put extra strain on the battery life &ndash; see below for more on that), especially if they were paired with at least 3GB of RAM.</p> <p>Samsung has form in launching its flagship phones with octo-core Exynos chipsets too, albeit not in the UK. While eight cores might sound twice as powerful as four, in reality it doesn&rsquo;t quite work like that: in benchmarks, the Exynos-equipped S5 only performs marginally better than the Snapdragon 801-equipped S5. We think Samsung can stick to a quad-core Snapdragon 808 or 810 and still offer the performance a phone like the S6 will require.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll talk about storage here too. If it goes down the removeable backplate design route, Samsung is likely to support expandable storage via microSD, and thus the built-in storage doesn&rsquo;t need to be huge &ndash; let&rsquo;s say 32GB. If, however, the phone is has a metal unibody design and memory isn&rsquo;t user-increasable, we&rsquo;d like to see 64GB and maybe even 128GB as an option, just to keep pace with the Apple iPhone 6. And Samsung does like to be seen to be trying to keep up with Apple.</p> <p><strong>Update 08/12/14:&nbsp;</strong>Leaked AnTuTu benchmarks show off what could be the S6&#39;s final specs. Power-wise, we&#39;re looking at a 64-bit octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and, of course, Android 5.0 Lollipop.</p> <p>Samsung traditionally also launches a variant with a Qualcomm processor, which is expected to be the 64-bit Snapdragon 810.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" alt="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-snapdragon_0.jpg?1418633125" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Bigger and better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 has a 2800mAh battery that matches up to the majority of its Android rivals by lasting around a day in normal use conditions (but not all: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a> lasts at least half a day longer), and it holds an advantage over most too in that it&rsquo;s user replaceable. If Samsung decides to go with a seamless metal body that could change, and if it does we&rsquo;d like to see better battery life, either owing to a larger battery capacity or increased efficiency.</p> <p>The LG G3 has a 5.5in 2K screen and markedly longer battery life than the 5.1in, 1080p Galaxy S5, so it&rsquo;s certainly possible for Samsung to improve its power efficiency. Much of this will depend on the processor it chooses for the S6, and if that&rsquo;s the Snapdragon 808 or 810, neither seems likely to offer lower energy use than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 805. So it could well be that a larger battery is required.</p> <p>Of course, Samsung may want to retain its user replaceable battery selling point, in which case it&rsquo;ll probably hint that those looking for more battery life could simply buy a second battery to carry around with them.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" alt="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-battery_1.jpg?1418633125" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Better in low light, please </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Were we betting types, we&rsquo;d put a significant wedge on the S6&rsquo;s camera outstripping the S5&rsquo;s when it comes to megapixel count. The S5 has a 16MP sensor, and we&rsquo;d be surprised if the S6 doesn&rsquo;t take things above 20MP.</p> <p>But megapixels alone don&rsquo;t make a good photo, and we&rsquo;d much rather see some measures taken to boost performance in low light conditions: larger megapixels (Apple&rsquo;s favoured method), optical image stabilisation, a wider aperture, or a combination of those. Optical image stabilisation is a distinct possibility, we&rsquo;d say, as Samsung has already used it in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Galaxy Note 4</a>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re not personally much inclined to take selfies, but we hear a lot of &ldquo;the young people&rdquo; are, and Samsung may well attempt to entice them to the S6 with a higher resolution front-facing camera. The HTC Desire Eye manages to squeeze a 13MP snapper on its front side, and while we wouldn&rsquo;t expect (or want) Samsung to go to those lengths, we wouldn&rsquo;t be surprised to see something in the 7 or 8MP range.</p> <p><strong>Update 08/12/14:&nbsp;</strong>Leaked AnTuTu benchmarks point to a massive 20MP rear-facing camera, bringing the S6 up to the Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact, in terms of megapixels at least. It&rsquo;s a large phone with a large screen, and it offers power user features such as a digitiser stylus.</p> <p>The curve doesn&rsquo;t make the Note Edge better for games, or drawing, or anything like that. However, it does help you deal with the practical issues that come with a phone that really fills palms and pockets.</p> <p>The default display of the curve is a list of app shortcuts, the kind you&rsquo;d normally see at the bottom of the display of any other Android homescreen. As it&#39;s so big, reaching to the opposite end of the screen with a thumb is a right pain, but thumbing the icons laid along the curvy side is easy. That your thumb already faces the right direction is what validates the bend. At least in part.</p> <p>It also makes the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge absurdly right-hander-centric, though. If you naturally hold a phone in your left hand, there seems virtually no benefit to the curve&rsquo;s spot on the phone.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll cover more on what the curve can do software-wise in a bit, but how&rsquo;s the design otherwise?</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The default display of the curve is a list of app shortcuts, the kind you’d normally see at the bottom of the display of any other Android homescreen" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-edge-2_2.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A big boy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note Edge takes its core style from the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review" target="_blank">Note 4</a>. A band of aluminium runs around the sides while the back is a thin plate of leather-effect plastic. Many people complain about the plastic feel of Samsung&rsquo;s phone rears, but moaning about it at this stage seems a bit pointless. It&rsquo;s the way Samsung rolls, at least for now, and it is somewhat offset by having the metal sides and an almost entirely glass front.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s impressive technical precision to the curve too. It&rsquo;s incredibly smooth, and the actual display swoops around with the top glass layer as if they&rsquo;re the same entity. Whether you agree with the curve or not, you can&rsquo;t help but conclude Samsung has aced its execution from an engineering perspective.</p> <p>While the curve provides some practical benefits as well as being as eye-catching as Ziggy Stardust walking around Tescos, the design also has its downside - the Note Edge is an extremely wide phone. At 82.4mm wide it&rsquo;s almost a half-centimetre wider than the already-massive Note 4.</p> <p>Full-size adult man-hands will find this phone a handful and trying to type on one single-handed is a nightmare of &ldquo;I&rsquo;m in a maths exam and am also naked&rdquo; proportions. An Air Command menu pops up when the pen is removed, giving you shortcuts to make notes on the screen, scribble down memos or use the pen to screen grab parts of what&rsquo;s being displayed.</p> <p>We found the S Pen far more useful for precision browsing, the odd bit of handwriting and idle drawing, though. Thanks to the Note Edge&rsquo;s curvy bit, its screen is squatter, leaving the main flat bit of the display to offer the widescreen aspect we&rsquo;re used to.</p> <p>Display quality is, as has become the norm for Samsung, top notch. You get a Super AMOLED display of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels offering a blisteringly sharp 524ppi density.</p> <p>Fresh out of the box, the Note Edge&rsquo;s colours are far too saturated, typical of an over-keen AMOLED screen. Naff games, mind. You can choose which to use, and flick through them with a swoosh of your thumb.</p> <p>At present most panels are Samsung-made, but Yahoo is also on-board. If we see plenty more Samsung phones start to use the screen curve, you can expect loads of other developers to join up and make panels. If the Note Edge ends up being it, the lone curvy phone, getting all that many more people involved seems unlikely. Only time will tell on that one.</p> <p>We do think there are a few steps to go before the implementation of the curve is perfect. Don&rsquo;t get us wrong: for a new design, the Note Edge&rsquo;s curvy bit feels incredibly well-implemented. A few bits such as the multi-tasking menu have been tweaked, but the same design is in place.</p> <p>Despite the Note Edge&rsquo;s obvious early adopter appeal, Samsung has also held back installing too many apps on the phone. This isn&rsquo;t the TouchWiz of the bad old days - instead there are just a few extras, such as S Note, S Health and Smart Remote. The latter uses the IR blaster on the top of the phone so you can use your phone to control your home entertainment gear.</p> <p>General performance is very good, which you&rsquo;d obviously expect given the Note Edge&rsquo;s top-tier specs.</p> <p>It has 3GB of RAM and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, the same used by the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review" target="_blank">Note 4</a>. This is a 32-bit chipset while we&rsquo;re on the eve of a 64-bit sea change, but by current standards it&rsquo;s still incredibly powerful. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark we scored 3310 points &mdash; a healthy chunk more than the Galaxy S5.</p> <p>As you&rsquo;d hope, the Note Edge has no trouble with high-end games, cutting through 3D titles with ease.</p> <p>One of the great things about the phone is that while it&rsquo;s an oddball, there&rsquo;s no real compromise elsewhere. Apart from it being quite wide and, well, the cost of the thing. As with so many early adopter gadgets, it&rsquo;s damnably expensive.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sony-xperia-z4/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z4 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="General performance is very good, which you’d obviously expect given the Note Edge’s top-tier specs" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-edge-1_1.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Edgy snapper </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note Edge camera is much the same as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review" target="_blank">Note 4&rsquo;s</a>. It can occasionally push pics a little too far into unbelievable territory, but the Note Edge avoids the &lsquo;halo&rsquo; effect of lesser HDR modes.</p> <p>Thanks to OIS low-light shots aren&rsquo;t too noisy either, although they are still significantly slower-to-take than with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z3</a>. Despite stabilisation, you have to stay still for a second or two. Still, that&rsquo;s not bad for night shots.</p> <p>There are just two elements of the Note Edge&rsquo;s photographic performance that we&rsquo;re not thrilled about, and they have more to do with the app than the actual camera quality.</p> <p>First, Samsung has desperately tried to involve the edge in the photo-taking process by always putting the shutter button on it, but this doesn&rsquo;t always work. When shooting landscape photos, it&rsquo;s just that bit too hard to reach. We&rsquo;d much rather just use a conventional &lsquo;on-screen&rsquo; shutter button.</p> <p>The preview image when shooting is also weirdly very soft in certain conditions, making it tricky to know whether your images are properly in focus or not. As the focusing is fairly reliable, you just need to have a little faith. But it&rsquo;d be nice to see the phone&rsquo;s camera make better use of the Note Edge&rsquo;s fantastically sharp screen a bit more.</p> <p>On the other hand, the front camera has a 3.7-megapixel sensor, and from our tests it seems be be better than a lot of the &ldquo;me too&rdquo; advanced 5-megapixel front cameras out there. Its photos are bright even with indoors lighting, noise isn&rsquo;t too bad and good contrast brings a good degree of &lsquo;pop&rsquo; to your shots. Nice work, Samsung.</p> <p>And just as the company has started cutting back on the number of apps it preinstalls on its phone, the number of camera modes shown off is sensible too. As standard there&rsquo;s Selective Focus, Panorama and Rear-Cam selfie. The rest of the extras can be downloaded and added from the camera app&rsquo;s settings. Samsung no longer tries to bury you with the things, which is also nice.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography/feature" target="_blank">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="5312" height="2988" title="HDR photos can look a little larger-than-life, but when the results often look fantastic regardless, what’s the harm?" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/20141126_111241_1.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="5312" height="2988" title="Thanks to OIS low-light shots aren’t too noisy either, although they are still significantly slower-to-take than with the Sony Xperia Z3" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/20141123_161459_1.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="5312" height="2988" title="Mmm, tasty detail" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/20141124_160116_1.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Running out of juice </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In lots of core respects, the Note Edge matches the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review" target="_blank">Note 4</a>, and that&rsquo;s a very good thing. However, battery life is one of the big disappointments of the phone.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve been using it for more than a week now and each day we virtually drain the thing by bed time. We haven&rsquo;t been streaming video for hours a day or playing games for long stretches. The Note Edge&rsquo;s lovely big screen does invite you to browse more than normal, but it&rsquo;s clear that battery performance is simply not nearly as good as it is with the Note 4 or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>.</p> <p>Battery size may have something to do with this, but it doesn&rsquo;t seem to explain the whole story. It has a 3000mAh battery while the Note 4 has a 3220mAh one. However, 3000mAh should be enough to get the phone lasting longer than we&rsquo;re seeing here. This makes us wonder if the OLED screen used here is perhaps a bit less efficient than the ones seen in other Samsung phones, with its flexibility/bendability being its lead characteristic, rather than efficiency. Buy hey, we&rsquo;re just guessing at this point.</p> <p>That battery life is our one lasting gripe of the phone tells you that Samsung has done a really good job here, though. It hasn&rsquo;t proved a curved screen is utterly essential, but it has its uses and certainly feels far less of a &lsquo;because we can&rsquo; gimmick than the Galaxy Round.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-s6/samsung-galaxy-s6-what-we-d-see-samsung-s-next-flagship" target="_blank">Everyhing we know so far about the Samsung Galaxy S6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Towards the end of a normal day you&#039;ll be nervously searching for you charger" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-edge-18_1.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-10"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Inspecting what’s under the carpet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What&#39;s left?&nbsp;Well, this is of course a 4G phone, and all the bells and whistles of other top Samsung phones are present and correct.</p> <p>The Note Edge offers a heart rate sensor on the back and the fingerprint scanner on the front. But in person, the phone is actually a far more reasonable, practical device.</p> <p>While the curved screen adds to the phone&rsquo;s width, it does make a number of one-handed tasks easier. You don&rsquo;t miss out on any extra features as a result of the curve, either. That probably explains why the phone is quite so terrifyingly expensive at launch. S$1248 (RM3275) is a lot to pay for any phone, even an &lsquo;innovative&rsquo; one.</p> <p>High price pushes the Note Edge into a niche, but that was always where it belonged. Even if curved screens become common in 2015, this is the trailblazer. We&rsquo;ve had a lot of fun using the Note Edge, with our only serious regret for the thing being that it just doesn&rsquo;t last quite long enough off a charge to match-up with Samsung&rsquo;s more ordinary phones.</p> <p>Should you buy it? Probably only if you&rsquo;re determined to be first and most innovative in your gadget selection. But that doesn&rsquo;t mean you shouldn&rsquo;t still admire its boundary bending ways.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 Best Phones in the World right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review verdict" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note Edge review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-edge-2_0_1.jpg?1417682949" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Distinctive but not crazy, the Note Edge is next-gen design that works - Now the band plans to innovate in another way, by releasing a very special edition of its new album - called <em>Hungry Ghosts</em> - as DNA.</p> <p>Yes, that DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The band is working with Sri Kosuri, biochemist at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), whose previous conversion of a book into DNA got their attention. It&rsquo;s a matter of transferring one kind of code (digital) to another (genetic), and the result could merely look like a few drops of water in a vial. Except it&#39;ll have many thousands of copies of the album encoded within.</p> <p>Well, at least that&rsquo;s what it <em>might</em> look like, if they can sort out the logistics. &ldquo;Legally speaking, it&rsquo;s unclear whether we will be able to sell the DNA to anyone, or how we would physically get it to them,&rdquo; said singer Damian Kulash to the New Yorker. &ldquo;Obviously, it&rsquo;s an artistic gesture and a scientific project, not the most efficient way to actually buy our album.&rdquo;</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/11/24/petri-dish-pop">The New Yorker</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/fully-charged-legendary-star-wars-games-being-re-released-office-365-subscribers-get-unlim">Fully Charged: Legendary Star Wars games being re-released, Office 365 users get unlimited OnDrive storage, and Elon Musk sees A.I. as a threat</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Destiny’s first expansion exposed </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re still hooked on Bungie&rsquo;s amazing online shooter, <em>Destiny</em> (like we are), then you&rsquo;re no doubt looking forward to digging into <em>The Dark Below</em>, the first big expansion pack. The slick visuals and crescendoing engine roar give a sense of of the TTS&#39;s brutal speed at odds with the unhurried delivery of Löffler, who explains how Usain Bolt&rsquo;s taut legs inspired the TTS&rsquo;s design as he hammers it around the track. Looking around at him from the passenger seat, it&#39;s impressive how good he is at delivering a script at a hundred miles per hour.</p> <p>The footage was filmed on five GoPros mounted on a custom frame wedged in the passenger seat (pointing forward, up, down and to both sides). The five feeds were resolved into a 60fps, 3000x1500 video stream that allows you to look every which way but backwards (look down, and you have no legs).</p> <p>There are limitations, of course. The video isn&#39;t 3D - for obvious reasons, you can&#39;t lean forward to get closer to the car&#39;s controls - and the lack of G forces as you accelerate and corner takes some&nbsp;of the drama out of the drive. But short of putting you in a simulator, or of actually being driven in the car, this is the closest you&rsquo;re going to get. <p>Other Audi VR videos to watch include a look at the design sketches of the TTS, a 360-degree walk-around of the TT Coupe (the model you can drive away this month), and a comparison between the TT Roadster and the TTS (both coming next year). The drive is definitely the main event.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Findlater, looking sharp in a Samsung Gear VR" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-6.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The VR filming rig" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-tt-pro-vr-1.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Jurgen Loffler, ready to proselytise" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-tt-pro-vr-2.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You’re going to want a Gear VR </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Gear VR itself performs incredibly well. The video didn&rsquo;t stutter in playback even when I moved my head quickly, and the phone&rsquo;s nine-axis sensor did an impressive job of picking up my orientation as I looked around the dashboard and the track ahead. <p>Coincidentally, earlier that very same day I&rsquo;d tried a headset from VRTX One that operates in the same way as the Gear VR, except with an LG G3 in place of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Viewed through lenses that fill your entire field of vision, it&rsquo;s clear that the G3 has the better screen for close-ups &ndash; the Note 4&rsquo;s pentile OLED looks comparatively pixellated &ndash; but isn&rsquo;t so good at the movement sensing, which is noticeably jerkier.</p> <p>The VRTX One headset I tried was still at prototype stage, though, and the G3 inside was running different footage (in case you&rsquo;re wondering, an amazing-looking augmented reality fantasy RPG that only appears when you&rsquo;re gazing at a particular QR code, some footage from the side of a Linkin Park gig and some NFL training), and may perform better with further optimised software.</p> <p>The Gear VR&rsquo;s ergonomics and controls are also impressive: a wheel between the lenses smoothly adjusts focus, while a responsive touch panel on the right-hand side of the headset navigates menus, and a back button on the left returns you to your previous screen. (The GameFace has no visible controls.) It&#39;s a really comfy thing to wear, though judging from the pictures, not something to try in public.</p> <p>It&#39;ll be interesting to see how the Gear VR copes with 3D games run off the Galaxy Note 4. If the experience is as smooth as it is with the TTS drive video, the Gear/Note combo will be hugely compelling.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/first-consumer-vr-headset-mobile-phones-built-lg-g3/news">The first VR headset for mobile phones is built for the LG G3</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, side view" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-1.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, at the business end" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-2.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, at a wonky angle" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-7.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sold? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I&rsquo;d still recommend anyone in the market for a TT actually drive the car &ndash; after all, that&rsquo;s part of the fun &ndash; but if your dealership is in an area as manic as Piccadilly, I can understand taking the VR drive option. Sony&rsquo;s new PlayStation TV, launching tomorrow in the UK, is essentially the cheap home console version of the PlayStation Vita handheld, albeit without compatibility for many of the Vita&rsquo;s best games. And the aftermarket DekaVita7 takes the PS TV, wraps a large plastic shell around it, and thus turns it back into a portable system. Wait, why?</p> <p>We can&rsquo;t answer that question. Sure, the DekaVita7 offers a larger display than the Vita - it has a 7in IPS LCD, whereas the Vita has just a 5in display - but it lacks touch interactions, is compatible with a small portion of the Vita game library, and scraps the relatively precise design of the Sony handheld in favor of a big slab of plastic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s priced at nearly &pound;125 (RM655) in Japan, where it&rsquo;ll apparently launch in Q1 next year. But only if there are enough pre-orders to satisfy creator GameTech&rsquo;s manufacturing targets; otherwise &ldquo;the project will be abandoned.&rdquo; Good luck with that.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.gametech.co.jp/preorder/dekavita7/en/index.html">GameTech</a>&nbsp;via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.polygon.com/2014/11/12/7204493/this-overpriced-bulky-gadget-turns-your-playstation-tv-into-the">Polygon</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/pch-2000/playstation-vita-slim/review">Sony PlayStation Vita Slim review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="800" title="DekaVita7" alt="DekaVita7" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/dekavita.jpg?1415928314" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Simband dev kit is an enhanced Gear S </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Samsung hopes to bring on a variety of hardware and software partners for its health platform, and the Simband is the company&rsquo;s ideal for what a wellness-centric wearable should look like. On the outside, however, it looks just like the Gear S, with the same large, curved screen.
