So, unlike the recently released <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/samsung-galaxy-camera-2/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Camera 2</a>, it&#39;s designed to be your main device. That&#39;s just as well, because&nbsp;Samsung says the Galaxy K Zoom will cost around &pound;400 (approximately RM2200) when it goes on sale at the end of May. Essentially it&rsquo;s an expensive mid-range phone running Android KitKat.&nbsp;</p> <p>For a 4.8in phone, it&rsquo;s big. Lovely and ergonomic, with a curved <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S5</a>-style dimpled polycarbonate body, but still big. It&rsquo;s 16.6mm thick, so thicker than the 10.4mm Lumia 1020 and nearly every other smartphone on the market, and&nbsp;heavy too. At 200g it&rsquo;s a touch lighter than its predecessor the Galaxy S4 Zoom, but not by enough to make a real difference.</p> <p>Along the top edge, when held in landscape, you&rsquo;ll find the volume rocker, power button and shutter button - holding volume and shutter boots into the camera app from sleep.</p> <p>Round the front - or should that be back? - there&#39;s a 720p Super AMOLED. It&#39;s&nbsp;clear, bright and punchy and represents a big step up from the S4 Zoom, which had just a 4.3in 960x540 display.&nbsp;But frankly, we would have liked Samsung to wow us with a 1080p display here. If we owned a K Zoom we&#39;d expect to spend plenty of time zooming in, cropping and generally tinkering with big, crisp images before sharing them, all of which would be better in full HD.</p> <p>Inside it&#39;ll run on a hexa-core processor combining a quad-core 1.3GHz and dual-core 1.7GHz chips. Storage is one-size-fits-all - 8GB - but you can add more via microSD, and the 2430mAh battery is removable.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The K Zoom and Galaxy S5" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-S5-4.png?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The screen has a mere 720p resolution" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-viewfinder.jpg?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s pocket friendly (well, sort of) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Samsung&rsquo;s ditched the compact camera-style protruding grip on the bottom/right hand side of the S4 Zoom and replaced it with a sleeker smartphone-style straight back for the K Zoom. And we&#39;re very glad it has; sure, it meant that you could hold the S4 Zoom more like a compact cam but day-to-day we&rsquo;d rather have the extra pocket room.</p> <p>What&#39;s more, the K Zoom has fancy new retracting lens tech, which means that when not in use it doesn&#39;t protrude so far out of the back. The combination makes it look a lot more like a normal smartphone. There&rsquo;s no waterproofing - so close-ups of starfish are out - but the K Zoom&rsquo;s beefy build looks like it can take a drop or two.</p> <p>All in all, we like the direction Samsung&rsquo;s taken with the hybrid design. It&rsquo;s not perfect and you&rsquo;ll still look a little odd holding the K Zoom up to take a call, but it&rsquo;s a lot slicker than last year&rsquo;s attempts.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/oppo/oppo-find-7a/review" target="_blank">Review - Oppo Find 7a, the phone that takes 50MP photos</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The zoom no longer sticks out quite so much" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-side-1.png?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Galaxy K Zoom - tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>OS:</strong> Android 4.4 (KitKat)</p> <p><strong>Processor:</strong> Hexa core (1.3GHz quad-core + 1.7GHz dual-core)</p> <p><strong>RAM:</strong> 2GB</p> <p><strong>Screen:</strong> 4.8in, 1280x720, Super AMOLED</p> <p><strong>Camera:</strong> 20.7MP 1/2.3in BSI CMOS sensor, 10x optical zoom, OIS (rear); 2MP (front)&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Storage:</strong> 8GB (plus microSD up to 64GB)</p> <p><strong>Connectivity:</strong> Wi-Fi 802.11 (a/b/g/n) 2.4+5GHz, Bluetooth 4.0, USB2.0, NFC, 3G/4G</p> <p><strong>Battery:</strong> 2430mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions/weight:</strong> 137.5 x 70.8 x 16.6mm, 200g</p> <p><strong>Colours:</strong> Charcoal Black, Shimmering White, Electric Blue</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s also a 20.7MP compact camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The only real reason you&rsquo;d consider the K Zoom is if you want to graduate from smartphone cameras to something more advanced. So how&#39;s it fare as a snapper?</p> <p>Well, tech-wise it&#39;s not hugely different from the S4 Zoom. The sensor is now a 20.7MP BSI CMOS effort - the S4 Zoom was 16MP - but it stays the same physical size at 1/2.3in. That means the Nokia Lumia 1020 will almost certainly still take better pictures on account of its larger 1/1.5in sensor - not to mention its headline-grabbing 41MP.</p> <p>You also get Optical Image Stabilisation to help reduce blur and a bright Xenon flash to improve quality in poor lighting, but again both of these features were available on the S4 Zoom.</p> <p>In our short play, AF is nice and speedy though making use of the K Zoom&rsquo;s 10x optical zoom can take a while. It&rsquo;s handy then that Samsung&rsquo;s added in a button to jump to 10x rather than spending 10-15 seconds doing it manually.</p> <p>Video maxes out at 1080p/60fps. That&#39;s not a massive suprise, but given that the Galaxy S5 can shoot 4K, it would have been nice if it was included here too.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/samsung-galaxy-camera-2/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3518757647001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3518757647001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. One great addition is the AF/AE (autofocus/exposure) separation feature. This enables you to move the focus and exposure squares around the touchscreen and set them independently of each other, so you could, for instance, focus on a dark area but take the exposure reading from a more neutral spot. It&#39;s&nbsp;idiot-proof, works well and is&nbsp;a real help when&nbsp;taking photos in tricky light.&nbsp;</p> <p>Being a Samsung device, there are plenty of other features including a remote viewfinder app and a grand total of 28 shooting modes - some of which are undoubtedly gimmicks. But if you&rsquo;re overwhelmed by choice, hitting the Pro Suggest tile lets the K Zoom do the work for you. It&rsquo;s not as fast at detecting scenes as the Xperia Z2&rsquo;s Superior Auto mode, which snaps from macro to night to document in no time. But once it does select one, it overlays the chosen modes and filters (food, halogen lighting, vintage, bright colour etc) to help beginners and Instagrammers see what&rsquo;s going on.</p> <p>The K Zoom sample we looked at is pre-production so we can&rsquo;t give a definitve verdict on image quality just yet, but we&rsquo;re not sure simply increasing the megapixel count and adding a few software features will produce dramatically better results than the S4 Zoom. Either way, we&rsquo;ll be pitting it against the Lumia 1020 in a full test very soon.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="AF/AE separation works brilliantly" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-exposure-focus.png?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="There are dozens of camera modes on offer" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-settings-menu.png?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The Pro Suggest mode works as a kind of Superior Auto" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-pro-suggest.jpg?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Filters ahoy!" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-scene-modes.png?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The K Zoom has plenty to offer the photography enthusiast then - the optical zoom still being the most useful tool compared to the likes of the Galaxy S5. As always, the proof will be in the pictures.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/lumia-1020/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 1020 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;ll have a full review of the Galaxy K Zoom soon" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom smartphone camera review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-on-front.png?1399052434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-camera/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-camera/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom-hands-review/feature#comments Galaxy Camera Samsung Smartphones Tue, 29 Apr 2014 14:44:15 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1436369 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/samsung-galaxy-camera-2/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung’s second smart snapper excels at sharing, but you&#039;ll pay for the privilege </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Don&#039;t worry - it&#039;s also available in black" alt="Samsung Galaxy Camera 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/samsung-galaxy-camera-2-flash.jpg?1398825798" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Samsung was the first manufacturer to introduce a &#39;proper&#39; compact camera equipped with Android in the form of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-camera/samsung-galaxy-camera/review-0" target="_blank">Galaxy Camera</a>, and one year later its successor has arrived, sporting a newer version of Android &ndash; but not a whole lot else in terms of innovation.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> RM1,699.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default">6 stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-pros"> <div class="field-label">Pros:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android 4.3 means easy app sharing </div> <div class="field-item even"> Impressively large, sharp screen </div> <div class="field-item odd"> 50GB of free Dropbox storage </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-cons"> <div class="field-label">Cons:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Taste-free looks </div> <div class="field-item even"> Image quality is merely OK </div> <div class="field-item odd"> Almost unchanged from first Galaxy Camera </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Candy Crush snapper? It&rsquo;s not a major upgrade, in all honesty, but we won&rsquo;t gripe too much about it not being the latest 4.4 KitKat version of Google&rsquo;s operating system.</p> <p>Why not? Well, this isn&rsquo;t a smartphone, and 4.3 runs the necessary photo, video and social media apps well enough, while also allowing you to listen to music (there&rsquo;s a 3.5mm headphone socket on board), play games and so on. The idea of playing games on a camera is odd, we know, but you can fire up <em>Threes!</em> or <em>Candy Crush Saga</em> if you want and they&rsquo;ll run as well as on any phone.</p> <p>The photo app compatibility is the draw here though: as with the first Galaxy Camera, you can easily snap a good quality photo or video and upload it immediately to services such as Instagram and Facebook via Wi-Fi &ndash; and have it automatically backup to Dropbox (you get 50GB of free storage with the camera). The difference here? Not much, again. The Galaxy Camera 2 doesn&rsquo;t offer any connectivity options its predecessor didn&rsquo;t (both have a/b/g/n 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth 4.0), but it does feature a very slightly faster processor: a quad-core 1.6GHz CPU as opposed to a quad-core 1.4GHz CPU.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a slightly bigger battery aboard, which Samsung claims delivers around 400 shots per charge versus 340 on the first Galaxy Camera. We found it lasted a good three or four days of moderate use before we felt it needed recharging.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/lytro/lytro-introduces-illum-pro-level-light-field-camera/news" target="_blank">Meet the Lytro Illum - the pro-level camera that lets you refocus after you shoot</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apps galore on the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2&#039;s home screens" alt="Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-camera-2-android.jpg?1398825798" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Having Instagram on a &#039;proper&#039; camera: so wrong, but so right" alt="Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-camera-2-instagram.jpg?1398825798" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Selfie help </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 720p, 4.8in TFT display is the same as that on the original Galaxy Camera. The touch sensitivity works as well as could be expected, and overall it&rsquo;s a decent, if unremarkable display. Samsung claims its auto brightness mode means clear images even in bright sunlight, but we had trouble viewing it comfortably on a blazing morning without retreating into the shade.</p> <p>With very few physical buttons, the screen is used for tweaking settings and selecting the focus point. You can initiate camera mode&nbsp;while in &#39;normal Android&#39; by pressing the shutter button, and once within it you&#39;ll see dedicated on-screen buttons for capturing both stills and videos, as well as a Mode button which enables you to switch between Auto, Smart and Expert.</p> <p>Smart mode now&nbsp;has 28 presets, nine more than on the first Galaxy Camera, including&nbsp;tricksy modes such as &#39;Selfie alarm&#39; (which trips the shutter automatically when there are faces in frame, following a two-second warning tone), HDR and 4fps continuous shooting. We weren&rsquo;t particularly enraptured by the first model&rsquo;s photo and video quality, so for the replacement model to offer the same a year later&hellip; well, it&rsquo;s a big disappointment.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not that the images are terrible, because they&rsquo;re fine by mid-range compact camera standards. There&rsquo;s a pleasing amount of detail, noise isn&rsquo;t awful except at high ISO settings and colours are bright &ndash; but given that the Galaxy Camera 2 is being sold for nearly RM1700 and is one of the few compacts with Android, we were expecting something a bit more special.</p> <p>The 1080p and 720p videos are similarly acceptable without being excellent: smoother than you&rsquo;d expect from a smartphone thanks to the inclusion of optical image stabilisation, but really nothing special. It&rsquo;s a move that&rsquo;s somewhat out of character for a company such as Samsung, which thrives on innovating faster than most of its rivals.</p> <p>If you own the first Galaxy Camera, there&rsquo;s absolutely no point in replacing it with this one, and the RM1699 price tag also seems steep for those looking to buy their first Android compact. The sharing and backup features remain impressive, but the photo quality needed a bump &ndash; and it hasn&rsquo;t got it here.</p> <p>For the same price you could buy Canon&#39;s excellent pro compact the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/canon/canon-powershot-g16/review" target="_blank">Powershot G16</a> or the supremely desirable <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/fujifilm/fujifilm-x20/review"
