It&#39;s very easy to find a child that believes their teddy bear has sentience; the tricky thing would be finding one that says it&#39;s just a bit of old cloth and some stuffing.&rdquo;</p> <p>And it works. Ava is so convincing as a human largely due to the way she&rsquo;s depicted on screen. So how far from Ava is Honda&#39;s famed Asimo &#39;bot?</p> <p>&ldquo; In many ways Asimo&rsquo;s pretty primitive,&rdquo; says Shanahan, probably recalling <a href="http://youtu.be/VdydGVtncGE?t=50s">that video of Honda&rsquo;s pride and joy tumbling down a set of stairs</a>. &ldquo; If you&#39;ve ever seen Boston Dynamics&rsquo; Big Dog, that&#39;s a much more realistic way of walking. Asimo calculates every single step, which is very biologically unrealistic.&rdquo;</p> <p>But Ava isn&rsquo;t. She can dress herself, draw and move pretty much like a human being. She&rsquo;s a triumph of soft robotics, albeit one that&rsquo;s not possible just yet. &ldquo; When it comes to the hardware it&#39;s a matter of engineering,&rdquo; Shanahan says. &ldquo; Most robotics these days is made using very hard materials, whereas the stuff we&#39;re made of is soft, pliable and compliant. But eventually we are going to be able to produce humanoid robots that are really very sophisticated and Ava-like.&rdquo;</p> <p>&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t forget we have a four-billion-year advantage over designing robots because we&#39;ve evolved to be like this,&rdquo; adds Rutherford. &ldquo; We are such fluid machines and our mechanics are really sophisticated. I did some stuff with a company based in San Francisco that can get robots to drive cars, walk and jump, but they cannot make them get into cars. I thought that was really striking because it says something about the complexity of physicality.&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature">The 30 best things on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4256" height="2832" title="Dr Robotics" alt="Ex Machina: Just how close to reality is Alex Garland’s robo-thriller?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/EXM_D018_02784.jpg?1422159475" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Knowledge is power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But what about the stuff inside Ava&rsquo;s head? The development of hardware and AI isn&rsquo;t necessarily linked, so just because Asimo handles stairs like a drunk, doesn&rsquo;t mean he and his robo-buddies must have the mental capacity of one too, right?</p> <p>&ldquo;We&#39;re in need of a few conceptual breakthroughs before we get anything that resembles human-level artificial intelligence,&rdquo; reveals Shanahan, &ldquo;and I can&#39;t see that happening in the next 10 years. I think it probably will happen in the next 100 years.&rdquo;</p> <p>In that case we&rsquo;ve got plenty of time to work out how these AIs will work, and in&nbsp;<em>Ex Machina</em>&nbsp;Nathan uses methods to teach Ava about the world that Shanahan and Rutherford see as being perfectly viable. After all, there are plenty of mundane examples of AI in action in our everyday lives already: Google&rsquo;s search predictions, targeted online adverts and Twitter bots. Sure, they&rsquo;re not likely to power an android&rsquo;s brain anytime soon but using the internet to inform an AI isn&rsquo;t pure science-fiction.</p> <p>&ldquo;There&#39;s a truly enormous repository of data out there about human behaviour,&rdquo; explains Shanahan. &ldquo; Not just textual but videos and pictures, and a sophisticated machine learning algorithm can learn a huge amount from that.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4256" height="2832" title="Knowledge is power" alt="Ex Machina: Just how close to reality is Alex Garland’s robo-thriller?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/brain_concept_v009.jpg?1422159475" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The spy who tweets me </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, there are also negative implications to that sort of data farming and they&rsquo;re not lost on Garland. &ldquo;I&#39;m not on Twitter and I&#39;ve never been on Facebook or MySpace or anything like that. I think we were correctly worried about Snowden and the NSA, and what he did was brilliant. But ultimately in that instance we were talking about governments, and governments are elected. Or are there new rules that real-life robotics experts follow in hope of keeping us safe from our potential new overlords?</p> <p>&ldquo; The thing about those laws is that you&#39;re presupposing that you&#39;ve got something capable of actually interpreting them and reasoning through the ambiguity of them. While plenty of people follow them to the letter there are plenty of others who use them as a guideline. &ldquo; We use various religious and philosophical models as frameworks for behaviour because life is complex,&rdquo; he says before adding: &ldquo;Don&#39;t destroy humanity is, I think, a basic premise in all science.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The imitation blame </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Stephen Hawking recently suggested that artificial intelligence could be the cause of a real-life Judgement Day for the human race. When it gets encapsulated in a 20-second soundbite all of the intellectual nuance underneath it is lost.&rdquo;</p> <p>Garland agrees: &ldquo; If we&#39;re talking about AI as a conscious self-aware machine with an emotional life in the same way we have one, what you&#39;re saying is that the creation of a new consciousness is something innately problematic.</p> <p>&quot;I would say that every time people have a child they create a new consciousness, so I don&#39;t feel necessarily alarmed by it. While the future looks bright for robots, we&#39;re still not quite so convinced a robot can make coffee just the way we like it - not until robot taste buds get invented.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: </strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stunning-v12-f1-engine-coffee-machine-costs-rm48570/news" target="_blank">The most expensive coffeemaker ever?</a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://motherboard.vice.com/read/this-robot-barista-is-strangely-mesmerizing?utm_source=mbfb" target="_blank">Vice</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/PHxmGPA10ck" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/robot-barista-might-make-better-coffee-you/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/robot-barista-might-make-better-coffee-you/news#comments Robots Fri, 21 Nov 2014 05:03:48 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1453650 at http://www.stuff.tv Elon Musk secretly afraid AI will come for us http://www.stuff.tv/my/elon-musk-secretly-afraid-ai-will-come-us/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Obviously he will be among the first to be terminated by Skynet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Elon Musk secretly afraid AI will come for us" alt="Elon Musk secretly afraid AI will come for us" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/terminator%20musk.jpg?1416296956" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Billionaire and Tesla founder Elon Musk wasn&#39;t too happy when his private remarks about his fears about AI were made public. Bionic Bird is an update of earlier mechanical bird toys that were pretty much just simple amusements.</p> <p>Using a combination of Bluetooth 4.0 and an app, you can control the Bionic Bird for a range up to 100 metres. Its creators call it a &quot;furtive drone&quot; - meaning it doesn&#39;t so much look like a drone as much as something that looks like a bird if you squint hard enough.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Bionic Bird has wings, wings that actually flap. So much so that other birds either think it&#39;s one of them or scope it out to see if it would like to join them for dinner as the main course.</p> <p>As to its construction, it&#39;s made of elastic foam with carbon fiber wings. This bird is hardy enough to take a few bumps without it being weighed down too much to fly.</p> <p>What do you get with this bird? It has, among other things, a remote-controlled tail and by 2016, could even come with an HD video camera. So, a spy bird. You also get about 10 eight-minute flights after just 12 minutes of charging, which is a pretty good deal.</p> <p>iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPad mini devices are already supported for this iteration of the Bionic Bird while Android and the latest iPhones will be compatible by early 2015.</p> <p>Seems it isn&#39;t just other birds or cats who find Bionic Bird interesting as the Indiegogo campaign for it has soared past US$25,000 to reach US$97,000 (as of press time)</p> <p><a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bionic-bird-the-furtive-drone" target="_blank">Pay just US$120 (RM399)</a> for either a way to spy on your neighbours or entertain your cat for hours. Before it had no idea how to move its legs; so it had to experiment, and the camera told it how well it was moving around in the world.&rdquo;</p> <p>That means that if the robot&rsquo;s damaged &ndash; or if Bunting decides to change the design &ndash; it can compensate, without his having to reprogram it.</p> <p>&ldquo;I&#39;ve also done terrain adaptation,&rdquo; he adds. &ldquo; So by using the camera, it can build up a map of the environment, and then use that map to step on top of obstacles.&rdquo;</p> <p>While the prospect of swarms of hexapod robots that can&rsquo;t be stopped by damaging them gives us the shivers, fortunately Bunting&rsquo;s ambitions don&rsquo;t stretch to creating his own robot army. A taste tester, that doesn&#39;t exactly taste things the way we do - a robot. No, this is not The Onion.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not delicious enough, said the robot </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>According to the New York Times, the committee has described the robot thusly: &quot;&ldquo;an intelligent robot that measures smell and taste in food ingredients through sensor technology in order to measure taste like a food critic.&rdquo; Another name for it is the &#39;electronic tongue&#39;.</p> <p>Which begs the question - what&#39;s wrong with just hiring a critic in the first place? This is all the fault of the recently-ousted Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra who found the standard of Thai food outside the country frankly appalling. She decided that it was of national interest that the standards of proper Thai food be upheld even outside the country. Thus the Thai Delicious Committee was born.</p> <p>The robot will be unveiled at a swank event tonight in the country&#39;s capital but it&#39;s not in anyway a fancy humanoid-looking robot. It&#39;s basically a box that will scan food samples, create a chemical signature and then compare it to samples deemed worthy of Thai standards.</p> <p>On the other hand, though, isn&#39;t it creepy that a country is now deciding that there is only one acceptable standard or way to make, say, tom yam or green curry? What if, heaven forbid, Hong Kong decides to have dim sum standards or New York, New York Pizza criteria that must be fulfilled?</p> <p>Apparently the committee has spent around US$100,000 (RM327,050) on the taste-testing robot.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/robots">What else can robots do for us? One of the robot&#39;s Twitter followers dubbed it &ldquo;Hiker the Dog&rdquo;.</p> <p dir="ltr">The robot carries quite a winning personality as well. For the moment, the researchers can command the robots to perform simple tasks like forming the letter &ldquo;k&rdquo; and the robots will arrange themselves into the given pattern.</p> <p>The key is in algorithms, which automate the little logistical details of the order, and does not require detailed manual intervention from the master controller. And the key inspiration for the algorithm itself is in nature, from something like how a flock of birds might coordinate themselves in flight. &quot; The beauty of biological systems is that they are elegantly simple -- and yet, in large numbers, accomplish the seemingly impossible,&quot; said Nagpal. Insert your favourite villainous cackle here.</p> <p>The technology could have numerous practical applications, automating devices and software without the need for constant human supervision. For now, the algorithm needed to start a robot uprising is open source and available for free on Harvard&#39;s website. How scientists programmed the robot to overcome a broken leg was simply trial and error: discover which leg was broken and figure out the most efficient way to keep going. Indeed, efficiency was the crux of the problem for robots because movement was extremely inefficient &ndash; to the point that any loss of limb was incapacitating.</p> <p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, other scientists have made other advances at making the Terminator a reality. Boston Dynamics with US military funding created Big Dog, which can navigate all kinds of difficult terrain. BAE Systems is researching &ldquo;self-healing&rdquo; techniques for robots. It&rsquo;s still conceptual, but they postulate they could have robots releasing drones that can repair damaged jets mid-flight or on-board 3D printers to create new parts. Also, University of Illinois engineers developed a plastic that can repair itself.</p> <p dir="ltr">If one, touch wood, were to put all this tech together into one object then we indeed might have our fictions turn into reality. The problem with that, of course, is that canons crossing never go well. Indeed, what if in our world, the first Cylon rebellion was fought by an army of Terminators? Battlestar Galactica would not have even existed.
