There’s a lot of ways for us to poke fun at the unfortunately named Razer Nabu, but the reference would be lost if you’re reading this outside of Singapore. So we’ll focus on something more interesting instead. The Razer Nabu Beta Edition will be available from 10 July, for a mere US$1 (RM3.20)
True story, but here’s the caveat - you must have an existing Razer ID and sign up for the one-off Nabu Beta Program. One more thing, only 500 beta testers will be selected from the Beta program, following which they’ll be provided with a code to purchase a Nabu Beta unit at that insanely cheap price.
Razer’s not going to let you off that easy to let you enjoy this crazy offer. Selected beta users will report directly to Razer’s engineering team, providing feedback to improve the Nabu’s hardware and software features.
Alternatively, you can get the Nabu through the Nabu Developer Program. To state the obvious, the program is meant for developers to get early access to the smart band, allowing them to develop apps with the open Software Development Kit (SDK). The developer version, however, costs US$49.99 (RM161). The upside is, it’s a guaranteed purchase and is currently shipping, though in batches depending on the level of demand.
Razer’s smart band features a single OLED private message screen that displays notifications such as calls, text, social media alerts from your smartphone to the band. But it’s more than just a notification band. During our early hands-on with it, Razer told Stuff that besides the obvious fitness aspects, it’s still working to integrate the wearable tech with games.
