Imagine never needing to get a new phone anymore. All you have to do is swap in newer components into your phone and voila, it’s (technically) brand new.
That’s exactly what the Motorola seems to be aiming for with Project Ara. The concept isn’t new as it was first put forward by Dave Hakkens in his PhoneBloks concept. Motorola appears to have spotted the potential in the concept, and seized the opportunity with their Technical and Product groups now working together with Hakkens to make that concept a reality.
Swap in, swap out
As you read this, the project is already being opened up to the community and volunteers for modules to be designed. Some of the suggestions for modules include, camera, CPU , display, external battery, external sensors and a ton more. The module development kit (MDK) is expected to be out around winter.
If this phone reaches full production stage, we wouldn’t mind getting our hands on it. But, Motorola will need to start pushing out phones to our side of the Pacific by then for it to actually happen.
