If you've been holding out for a Surface Pro or have preordered one, then rejoice as the Surface Pro 3 is now officially available in Malaysia. As expected, the prices are the equivalent of a midrange laptop but still better compared to the first iteration which were pricey for what you were getting.
Best ultraportable ever?
A summarised list of the different makes available and their prices as below:
Intel® Core™ i3, 64 GB and 4 GB of RAM: RM2,729
Intel® Core™ i5, 128 GB and 4 GB of RAM: RM3,299
Intel® Core™ i5, 256 GB and 8 GB of RAM: RM4,199
Intel® Core™ i7, 256 GB and 8 GB of RAM: RM4,999
Intel® Core™ i7, 512 GB and 8 GB of RAM: RM6,779
Is the Surface Pro 3 worth getting? Right now for its specs and price point, it's a very good alternative to a laptop ultraportable. But also factor in the extra RM409 needed to purchase a Type Cover as the price is only for the tablet itself.
For bang for the buck, the i5 with 8GB seems to be the best bet for a decent mix of power and performance. An i7 might be overkill for all but those using CPU-intensive devices and it's not really worth getting something with less than 8GB of RAM, considering the way Windows works.
Where can you buy the Surface Pro 3? Anywhere you see Surfaces being sold but officially these retailers will (should) have them in stock: Aone Plus Supplies & Services, Harvey Norman, Machanics, PC Image, Senheng, SNS Network, Thunder Match, and Viewnet. Which means they're probably at a mall near you if you live in the Klang Valley. What we'd really like to see is Microsoft offering online ordering options which would be way more convenient .
