At long-last the indie game spaceship simulator FTL has arrived for the iPad. If you haven't heard of it, FTL gives you control of a spaceship which you commandeer through space and...try not to die.

What made this game a big hit is its inherent simplicity - it's easy to learn but hard to win. Each new game will see randomly-generated starmaps to explore, enemies to shoot down, ships to rescue or escort — all as you race towards the final big boss battle.

It's quite possible to die at least five times within the space of half-an-hour. Yhough FTL may not be forgiving, you can't say it's not fun. By the way, permadeath is a feature in this game. When you're dead, you're dead.

While the nearly US$10 price might seem steep for some, the game plays pretty much like the desktop version but with a touchscreen. The iPad version even comes with the free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, which adds to the replay value of the game.

Note that you will need at least an iPad 2 to play the game as the developers specifically mentioned that it is not iPad 1 compatible.

Start your quest for space mastery by getting it for US$9.99 at the App Store.
