When the BlackBerry Z10 was announced earlier this year, it was mentioned that the company's iconic messenger system BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) would pushed out to other mobile OS platforms. According to Sunil Nalvani, Managing Director for BlackBerry India, it might be very soon.
A summer arrival
The comment was made during the launch of the BlackBerry Q5 in India on Tuesday, 16 July, where he gave some details on the availability of the service on Android. In fact his exact words according to IBNlive were;
"The service is coming to Android this summer. But summer as per North America, where it remains till September."
When pressed, he affirmed that it would be at the end of September.
So with BBM heading to the other OSes, will people consider it in place of the existing popular Whatsapp? Considering there is no dearth of messaging apps available for the Android and iOS platforms (Viber, KakaoTalk, WeChat just to name a few), would BBM even flourish in an ecosystem outside its own?
