It looks smart enough to wear with a suit and unless you get an email or phone call when someone&rsquo;s glancing at your wrist, it won&rsquo;t get much attention.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s taller and slightly chunkier but otherwise very similar to last year&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review">Sony SmartWatch 2</a>, with a plain, rectangular glass front and stainless steel frame that&rsquo;s waterproof for up to 30 minutes in 1m of water. LG hasn&rsquo;t even stuck its name anywhere apart from inside the device and there are precisely zero buttons, not even a power button. This actually isn&rsquo;t a problem day-to-day &ndash; just don&rsquo;t power off then lose the charging cradle or you&rsquo;re done for.</p> <p>Like most smartwatches it ultimately ends up looking like a mini smartphone with two watchstraps attached, but the metal sides of our Black Titan version catch the light nicely and there&rsquo;s a slightly blingier White Gold model should you wish to match your smartwatch to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3/review">your gold LG G3</a>. Plus, the straps can be swapped out for any 22mm watchstraps, and though it sits oddly flat atop the wrist it&rsquo;s fairly comfortable to wear.</p> <p>In summary, it&rsquo;s inoffensive rather than stunning. Maybe the forthcoming <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/motorola/moto-360-smartwatch-likely-be-cheaper-expected/news">Motorola Moto 360</a> will be the first true smartwatch icon.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo/review">Samsung Gear 2 review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="No icon " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-colourful-watchface.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Classic faces suit the Pebble Steel better " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-classic-watchface.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Sits flat on the wrist but is still comfortable " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-on-wrist-side.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="The only LG logo is hidden on the inside " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-inside.png?1405905078" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen - Lovely (in an ordinary sort of way) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Android Wear&rsquo;s colourful cards and icons look great on the G Watch&rsquo;s fairly big 1.65in screen and make the e-paper Pebble Steel seem even more retro. The IPS display is easy to see even when not fully tilted towards you and contrast is decent.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s as far as it goes for good news, though. It&rsquo;s not exactly sharp at 290x290 and with its 1.63in 320x320 display the incoming <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/gear-live/google-io-2014/samsung-reveals-gear-live-its-first-android-wear-smartwatch/news">Samsung Gear Live</a> will make it look positively archaic. The Samsung will be AMOLED too so it should be easy to read even in direct sunlight - the G Watch is tricky to make out in the sun. Still, there&rsquo;s a brightness toggle with six options in the settings, which helps a bit.</p> <p>Our biggest problem with the screen is that the G Watch&rsquo;s motion sensor is supposed to wake it up from dimmed whenever we tilt our wrist, but this is really hit and miss. More often than not, we&rsquo;ve been tapping the screen to wake it. It&rsquo;s also a fingerprint magnet, so you&rsquo;ll find yourself wiping it with your sleeve throughout the day.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/martian/martian-notifier/review">Martian Notifier review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Good colours, bad waking up abilities " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-colour-face.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Text is easy to read but the Gear Live is sharper " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-missed-call.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G Watch Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 1.65-inch LCD IPS (280X280)</p> <p>OS: Android Wear</p> <p>Processor: 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor</p> <p>RAM: 512MB</p> <p>Storage: 4GB</p> <p>Bluetooth: 4.0</p> <p>Water &amp; Dust Resistance: IP67</p> <p>Battery: Li-Polymer 400mAh</p> <p>Strap size: 22mm (Interchangeable)</p> <p>Dimensions: 37.9 X 46.5 X 9.95mm</p> <p>Weight: 63g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Runs Fast, Drains Faster </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG&rsquo;s done a good job making sure Android Wear performs excellently here. There&rsquo;s no stutters when opening agendas or swiping away notification cards and the Bluetooth connection is steady.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s no surprise considering the G Watch is as powerful as some mid-range phones. It runs on the same processor as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">HTC One Mini 2</a>, Qualcomm&rsquo;s Snapdragon 400, which you might think is overkill considering all it has to do is display Google Now cards and take care of voice input.</p> <p>So that&rsquo;s that. Smooth sailing. Battery life, though, is a problem. LG&rsquo;s stuffed a big (for a smartwatch) 400mAh battery into the G Watch; that&rsquo;s larger than those in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/gear-live/google-io-2014/samsung-reveals-gear-live-its-first-android-wear-smartwatch/news">Gear Live</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review">SmartWatch 2</a>. But even though LG quotes 36 hours for it, we haven&rsquo;t managed that yet, instead getting no more than 24 hours of use out of it. And that&rsquo;s a pain.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not entirely LG&rsquo;s fault - Android Wear is busy, colourful and designed for mini LCD screens such as the G Watch&rsquo;s, so it was never going to compete with the e-paper <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble Steel&rsquo;s five-day battery life</a>. Nor do we expect the Gear Live to last any longer. But that Snapdragon chip was probably unnecessary - the Pebble gets by just fine on a 80MHz ARM processor - and we&rsquo;re sure more can be done by Google to optimise Wear for smartwatch batteries.</p> <p>Having to charge it once a day is bad enough but there&rsquo;s a charging cradle to contend with, too. While a little annoying - heaven help you if you lose it - it&rsquo;s a well designed bit of kit, holding the G Watch securely in place via the magic of magnetism. Plus, its inclusion means there&rsquo;s no need for a microUSB port to ruin the G Watch&rsquo;s sleek lines.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review - the best smartphone money can buy&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Boop - pull down for the date and battery " alt="LG G Watch review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-battery.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The neat charging cradle " alt="LG G Watch review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-watch-review-charging-cradle.jpg?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android Wear - defining the smartwatch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>After living with it for a few days, it&rsquo;s obvious that Android Wear is the future of smartwatches. Yes, it&rsquo;s rough around the edges and needs tons of tweaks before it&rsquo;s perfect, and yes, it&rsquo;s early days for third-party apps. But the basics are so exciting that you won&rsquo;t care.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll dive into more detail in our full review of Android Wear - coming very soon - but for now, here&rsquo;s what you need to know. Like any Android Wear smartwatch, the G Watch pairs to an Android phone running Jelly Bean and above via Bluetooth. Wear pushes phone notifications - calls, texts, emails, social media, calendar appointments - to the watch and manages everything in the free Android Wear app.</p> <p>But unlike other smartwatch operating systems, Wear also displays &lsquo;cards&rsquo; - basically Google Now, miniaturised - containing info on anything it thinks you might need. That means handy weather and calendar cards first thing in the morning; bus times for the bus stop you&rsquo;re heading towards; the number of minutes it&rsquo;ll take you to walk to the pub you looked up on Google Maps (on your phone) a few hours earlier.</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/MxWlODvg265/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>That&rsquo;s not to say it always gets it right. Google&rsquo;s making educated guesses on what you might find useful and when you&rsquo;re being buzzed by the G Watch 100 times a day thanks to work emails, being told you&rsquo;re ten minutes away from home for no reason can grate. That&rsquo;s not helped by the lack of granular control over which notifications come through - something we hope Google fixes quickly. For now, it&rsquo;s all or nothing.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s more than just a mind-reader, though. Gmails, for instance, pop up on the screen and can be opened with a tap then read in full by scrolling down. It&rsquo;s also damn good looking, with full-screen photos behind the text, colourful icons and big round action buttons such as &lsquo;Open on phone&rsquo; accessed by a swipe to the left. And there&rsquo;s a decent, if not huge, selection of watchface styles to choose from.</p> <p>And then there&rsquo;s the voice control...</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/oneplus-one/review">OnePlus One review - the king of the budget smartphones</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Wear&#039;s location smarts are insanely clever " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-time-to-home.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s egg past frying pan " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-egg-face.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Swipe left for actions like open on phone " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-open-on-phone.png?1405905078" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Watchfaces can look cooler when the screen&#039;s dimmed " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-monochrome-face.png?1405905078" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Voice - the best we&#039;ve used on a wearable yet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Proof that this is the most impressive voice control we&rsquo;ve seen on a wearable? We&rsquo;ve used the feature every day we&rsquo;ve had the G Watch so far. On our sofa and on the street. And for the most part, it&rsquo;s worked.</p> <p>The G Watch doesn&rsquo;t need to be millimetres from your mouth to pick up your commands, which helps. &lsquo;OK Google&rsquo; launches voice when the screen is awake but we found a tap to wake (if the motion sensor doesn&rsquo;t kick in) and another tap to access the &lsquo;Speak now&rsquo; screen works best.</p> <p>So what can you do? The most used app here will probably be navigation - just say &lsquo;How do I get to..?/Navigate to&rsquo; and Google will pull up the route on your phone. It hasn&#39;t worked everytime on our review unit but hopefully this will get more reliable and maps will make the leap over to the watch itself.<iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/Mx7ZLHEHrJY/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>Also useful are &lsquo;Text/email Mum&rsquo; type commands which work better for short messages where you don&rsquo;t care about punctuation rather than for full-blown emails. The voice recognition isn&rsquo;t 100% spot-on but it&rsquo;s good enough to use - just be careful with hard-to-pronounce names and be prepared to swiftly hit the &lsquo;x&rsquo; if it chooses the wrong contact.</p> <p>Of course there are lots of times when you won&rsquo;t want to use voice, so with one tap on the watchface and a tap of the arrow you can access your calendar, steps and settings without uttering a word. It doesn&rsquo;t speak back to you like a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo/review">Gear 2</a> does, but it can do if you hook up LG&rsquo;s Tone+ Bluetooth headset.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/android-45/review">Android L preview - everything you need to know about Google&#39;s new OS&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Get voice control stagefright? Both will also run on Android Wear and it makes sense to wait until they arrive before choosing between them.</p> <p>And of course there&rsquo;s also the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble Steel</a>, which kills the G Watch with its five-day battery life and for many represents a more appealing take on the smartwatch concept: a way to augment your smartphone rather than display it on your wrist.</p> <p>Ultimately, while the G Watch is a neat enough bit of kit to show off Android Wear&rsquo;s capabilities, it&rsquo;s just not as bold as the operating system it was built for.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/wearable-tech/top-ten">The ten best smartwatches and other wearables in the world</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Not quite the icon Android Wear needs " alt="LG G Watch review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-message-2.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> design </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> smarts </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 6 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 5 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Not quite the icon Android Wear needs&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G Watch review </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Is this the right smartwatch for your wrist? Essentially, Android Wear devices are designed to show you the information you need at the moments you need it, delivering contextual cards with notifications from apps on a paired device running Android 4.3 or higher.</p> <p>The watch screen stays on at all times in a black and white mode, and then to full color when lifted or tapped. You can just speak commands into the phone (starting with &ldquo;OK Google&rdquo;) to search, pull up apps, answer text messages, and more. Swiping up and down scrolls you through the cards, and you can go left and right as needed when an app allows multiple displays.</p> <p>Android Wear devices also have fitness functionality, as expected, with apps able to use a built-in sensor to read your heart rate, plus they&rsquo;ll log your steps throughout the day. When an Android Wear watch is synced to a device, it&rsquo;ll automatically install the Wear portion of any downloaded apps and keep them up to date.</p> <p>All told, the UI seems strongly focused on simplicity and being a good companion to your phone, rather than try to duplicate all functionality.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="799" title="Samsung Gear Live" alt="Samsung Gear Live" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-gearlive.jpg?1403747129" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The full Android Wear SDK is available today for third-party app makers, and the keynote offered a look at some of the possibilities. Both have Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processors, with the G3&#39;s clocked at 2.5GHz and the M8&#39;s running at 2.3GHz. The G3 packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, although a version with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage might land in the UK at a future date. The M8 has 2GB of RAM in either 16GB or 32GB varieties.</p> <p>Both phones score more or less the same reults in various benchmark tests, and numbers aside, they&#39;re both slick and fast in normal use. Multitasking, 3D gaming and browsing are slick and fluid on both.&nbsp;</p> <p>We&#39;d expect things to be pretty similar on the battery front too. The LG G2 was one of the best phones around in terms of stamina, but the G3 falls al little short, eeking out around one-two hours less battery life a day.</p> <p>Still, we managed to get 15 hours out of it with five hours of screen on time in a single day, which is an impressive achievement given the much bigger, higher-resolution screen. It&#39;ll&nbsp;comfortably give you a full day of heavy use, which is an important box to tick.</p> <p>The M8&#39;s battery is smaller, at 2600mAh, but it also has a smaller screen to power. In our tests, we generally got a day&#39;s use from it, but no more. Both phones also have clever battery-saving modes which will help you eke out every last drop of juice.</p> <p>All told, there&#39;s very little between the phones on the power front, so this one&#39;s a draw.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8/feature">Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="392" title="What lies beneath" alt="Which smartphone? While we haven&#39;t got the stopwatch out to verify this, we can say that the G3&#39;s autofocus is very snappy indeed.</p> <p>Overall, our experience with the G3 cements it as having one of the best smartphone cameras currently available. It&#39;s a superb all-rounder, excelling and surpassing the One (M8) in almost every category from well-lit conditions, to sharpness and natural colours.</p> <p>The One (M8)&#39;s 4MP UltraPixel sensor performs well in low-light conditions, but it just doesn&#39;t serve up the same levels of detail as the G3.&nbsp;Yes, its low-light photos might be a little less noisy, but they&#39;ll also be smaller, so you won&#39;t be able to blow them up so big or crop into them.</p> <p>The M8 has a new photo feature of its own too - the new Duo camera. This is a genuinely innovative feature which enables you to refocus photos after you&#39;ve taken them. It works a little like the Lytro camera, although without quite such a dramatic effect. It&#39;s a bit of a gimmick, yeah, but a nice one to have all the same.</p> <p>The trouble for HTC is, the G3 can also create this post-shot focusing effect using Magic Focus. It takes numerous shots at different focal lengths in quick succession, before stitching them together and alowing you to change the focus post-shot.</p> <p>In the One (M8)&#39;s defence, you&#39;re able do this whenever you fancy, while you can only change the focus on the G3 after the shot is initially taken.</p> <p>Video-wise, the G3 can shoot 4K at 30fps and full HD at creamy 60fps and slo-mo 120fps. The M8 can do full HD and 120fps slo-mo, but no 4K.</p> <p>Ultimately, we&#39;ve got to give this round to the G3. It&#39;s a jack of all trades, while mastering them too, thanks to welcome innovations like OIS+ and laser autofocus.&nbsp;</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G3</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/25-best-games-android-right-now/feature">The 25 best games on Android right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The M8 has a Dual Camera for post-photo refocusing" alt="Which smartphone? Colours are no longer quite so garish and much of the bloatware has seemingly been removed. And if you&#39;re still not happy, you can mercifully uninstall nearly every pre-installed LG app, which is rather nice.</p> <p>The G3 also has the excellent KnockCode feature, which we saw on the G Pro 2. This lets you unlock the phone simply by tapping out a preset pattern, which takes you straight to the home screen.</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="600" src="https://vine.co/v/Mmnzlz7dD3Q/embed/simple" width="600"></iframe></p> <p>Another weapon in the G3&#39;s OS arsenal is its Guest Mode feature, which lets you section off a safe area of the phone for when you lend it to, say, your kids. It&#39;s like a safe sandbox which is separate from all of your apps, photos and documents, avoiding situations in which important files could be deleted.</p> <p>The G3 also has a few little software touches which make using it easier. You&#39;ve got the ability to include an extra button in the on-screen navigation bar which pulls the notification bar down for you. Given the awkwardness of reaching up to the top of the G3&#39;s 5.5in screen with a single thumb, this comes in incredibly useful for one-handed use.</p> <p>You can also track your steps and calories burned in an app similar to Samsung&#39;s S Health, although it&#39;s not as in-depth as dedicated health-tracking apps like Jawbone&#39;s offering.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sense 6.0 on the One M8 is one of the few examples of Android phones where a skin is a welcome addition, because HTC&#39;s Sense 6.0 is a thing of beauty. It&#39;s slick in use, not too overbearing and comes with the fantastic BlinkFeed. As a way of aggregating all of your social media feeds and favourite news sources, it&#39;s unparalleled, and the new version also allows you to add RSS feeds of your choice. </p> <p>Like the LG G3, the One (M8) can be turned on with a tap - although the fancy Knock Code pattern unlock is absent. You can however swipe left or right to fire up a certain app or go straight to the home screen, which is a nice bonus.</p> <p>The charms of BlinkFeed will be enough to sway things HTC&#39;s way for some, while for others the G3&#39;s Guest Mode and Knock Code security unlock will be the more tempting option. Both devices have strong cases, so this one&#39;s a draw too.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/exclusive-htc-shows-stuff-how-one-m8-could-have-looked/feature">Exclusive - HTC shows Stuff how the One (M8) could have looked</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="BlinkFeed is a big favourite at Stuff" alt="Which smartphone?
