The design is gallery-worthy, finished with rounded aluminium corners, an all-glass back and minimalist details. But your hands might not like it &ndash; both the S5 and One M8 are easier to hold than this 163g block, and picking up the Z2 from a desk can be awkward.</p> <p>It has Live Colour LED tech for punchy but accurate hues, and clear-sounding stereo speakers on the front of the phone. Our only niggle? The front is seriously reflective. For a smartphone camera, the Z2 can take incredible photos with its 1/2.3in, 20.7MP sensor and speedy autofocus. It also flies in use: these three phones share the same 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor but the Sony&rsquo;s 3GB of RAM bests its rivals.&nbsp;Small apps in overlaid windows lag occasionally, but it&rsquo;s still a great use of that 5.2in screen, and the Android skin is mostly clutter-free. </p> <p>With a bigger screen, there&rsquo;s a bigger 3200mAh battery and the Z2 reliably lasts the day - with Stamina mode to conserve juice when the screen&rsquo;s off. </p> <p>Overall, this is the connoisseur&rsquo;s choice, capable of taking brilliant photos and playing cinephile video. It oozes quality but isn&rsquo;t the most practical choice. But if you have the time to show Sony some love, it will return it in large dollops.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sony-xperia-z2-sirius/review">Sony Xperia Z2 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1889" height="1417" title="The Xperia Z2 makes almost no compromises" alt="Which smartphone? Although the Z2&rsquo;s a heavy smartphone, this isn&rsquo;t the problem - the HTC weighs just as much. The issue is more that the Z2&rsquo;s toughened glass build would work better scaled down. When you&rsquo;re dealing with a 5.2in diagonal span of glass, ergonomics count (we&rsquo;re hoping the Z2 Compact gets this right).</p> <p>Another smartphone best picked up and fondled before you decide, then. If its shape and minimalist design work for you, you can get back to appreciating everything the Sony does brilliantly. Such as being waterproof: with all the port flaps closed, the Z2 has the same IP55/IP58 water-resistance as the Z1. Plus, the headphone jack is now flap-free.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10</strong></p> <p>In almost every way the Z2&rsquo;s screen is a stunner. It displays fine detail better than both the S5 and the One M8, perfect for pressing your nose up against full HD movies. Viewing angles aren&rsquo;t the best but they&rsquo;re no longer a problem either.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong></p> <p>The Superior Auto mode doesn&rsquo;t always produce the best images &ndash; it can struggle to expose correctly in sunlight and it doesn&rsquo;t have the night vision of the HTC. But chances are, Sony owners won&rsquo;t mind digging into the comprehensive settings.</p> <p>Here it shines: faces come out well in low light, scenes look punchy and the background de-focus mode is mesmerising. Both 1080p and 4K footage are smooth thanks to SteadyShot stabilisation, though autofocus jumps around while filming and, with the Snapdragon heating up, the Z2 can abruptly stop shooting in the higher resolution.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong></p> <p>Sony&rsquo;s treatment of KitKat verges on bloatware, with pushy media services ruining the fun. For instance, an upward swipe to access Google Now also shows Sony&rsquo;s What&rsquo;s New app: a feature guaranteed to have zero fans.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/10-best-apps-sony-xperia-z2/feature">10 of the best apps for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ultimate-setup-sony-xperia-z2/feature">The best cases, headphones and accessories for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="The Sony&#039;s ergonomics hold it back" alt="Which smartphone? This is one of the best-looking and best-built phones ever, with 20% more metal than its predecessor the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/htc-one/review">HTC One</a> and microSD storage now included. Any One (M8) owner will find themselves checking emails too much just to show it off.</p> <p>The 5in, 441ppi screen is super-sharp and considerably bigger than the One&rsquo;s 4.7in display &ndash; it&rsquo;s not a clear winner but in many ways it&rsquo;s our favourite screen here. Colours look natural, text is smooth and viewing angles are fantastic.</p> <p>Has HTC fixed the One&rsquo;s niggles? Battery life is slightly better, bringing it on a par with its rivals &ndash; you shouldn&rsquo;t need the Ultra Power Saving Mode to last the day. But the UltraPixel camera stays. This might disappoint those looking to shoot serious images and footage, but for most, the low-light prowess and focusing tricks are good enough. Nothing else needed tweaking &ndash; in use, it&rsquo;s as fluid as we expect from an HTC and the featureset gets new tricks here and there, such as the ability to swipe straight into BlinkFeed even when the phone is off.</p> <p>It might not have the bragging rights of a 20.7MP camera or a heart-rate sensor, but for us, the extras on the S5 and Z2 simply don&rsquo;t compare to the pure gadget joy you get with the HTC One M8.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/htc-one/review">HTC One (M8) - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The M8 looks every bit as nice as its predecessor" alt="Which smartphone? If you want those machined lines, choose the Metal Grey variant.</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10</strong></p> <p>The HTC might have the smallest screen here at 5in but it beats the mighty Sony on contrast and off-axis viewing. Compared to the original One, the palette leans to the green side&hellip; but only nerds will notice that.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 8/10</strong></p> <p>More than a gimmick, the Duo camera lets you change the focus of pics after you&rsquo;ve taken them; and unlike on the Samsung and Sony, you don&rsquo;t need to select a mode before taking the shot. You can 3D-ify pics with Dimension Plus.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 10/10</strong></p> <p>Still our Android skin of choice, Sense 6 will win over even fans of stock Android. Big screens, big specs, big tricks and, of course, big sales. But the small stuff can be just as exciting and the S5&rsquo;s only halfway there.</p> <p>Samsung&rsquo;s still enamoured by its Galaxy design DNA: lightweight, durable and now waterproof &ndash; it makes a lot of sense. But with a big handprint, &lsquo;modern glam&rsquo; back panel and poor size-to-screen ratio, it&rsquo;s still not beautiful.</p> <p>Features rule, with a swappable battery, microSD storage, the ability to run two apps side by side and even a heart-rate sensor round the back. It&rsquo;s not 2K but the 5.1in Super AMOLED screen is the best we&rsquo;ve seen on a Samsung phone. Plus there&rsquo;s a superb ad-hoc 16MP snapper with fast autofocus and 4K video &ndash; just in case you thought Samsung had gone soft on specs.</p> <p>That TouchWiz lag is almost gone for good &ndash; a few stutters using its My Magazine Flipboard app were all we could force &ndash; and battery life is on the longer-lasting end of the Androids That Last A Day spectrum.</p> <p>If the tweaked build and cleaned-up user interface are anything to go by, Samsung is taking design, inside and out, seriously. And it now matches the Samsung with a removable battery and microSD slot.</p> <p>It doesn&#39;t have the booming dual front-facing speakers on the One M8, but its rear 1W speaker is no slouch, and can almost match its HTC rival for loudness, if not bass.</p> <p>While it lacks the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2&#39;s waterproof powers, its build is much improved, with a plastic, brushed-metal-look finish that will fool your eyes, if not your fingers.</p> <p>LG&#39;s redesigned its UI too, opting for less eye-searing colours and a more muted, subtle look.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The G3 in the background appears smaller because it is further away" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8) vs Sony Xperia Z2 vs LG G3" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20Main_0_0_3.jpg?1406779973" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> THE DETAIL </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Design: 9/10</strong><br />The G3&#39;s faux brushed-metal finish is barely discernible from the real metal rear of the HTC One (M8), and it easily beats the S5 for classiness. Pick it up, though, and its weight (or lack of it) can&#39;t fool your fingers. So it&#39;s no M8, but that doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s not handsome in its own way.</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10&nbsp;</strong><br />The G3 stands out from the crowd, with a 2560 x 1600 2K screen. That&#39;s an insane 538 ppi, though you won&#39;t notice any difference in sharpness in normal use. Look closely enough however, and it does throw up more details than its rivals. Its colours are excellent too - even more realistic than those on the M8 - although brightness, black levels and contrast let it down somewhat. Overall though, it&#39;s one of the best screens our eyes have had the pleasure of ogling.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The G3&#39;s 13MP camera is, put simply, fantastic. It&#39;s a jack of all trades, and nearly a master of every one. Well-lit shots are packed with crisp detail, and it even beats the light-guzzling M8 in most murky conditions. Its advanced optical image stabilisation, coupled with its laser-assisted autofocus, help keep subjects in focus - and at lightning-quick speeds, too.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />LG has thankfully gone down the same fat-trimming path as Samsung. While its UI still isn&#39;t as minimalist as the Z2&#39;s, the garish icons are gone, replaced with flat, pastel-coloured icons.</p> <p>Much of the bloatware is gone too, and LG&#39;s done its best to simplify things. The camera app for example, has had almost every little-used feature eliminated, and its bare controls now make for a much more pleasant experience.</p> <p>LG&#39;s new Smart Notice is less useful. It&#39;s essentially a Google Now clone, and we can&#39;t see any benefit it offers over Google&#39;s own well-established offering.&nbsp;Smart Clean is more useful, prompting you to clean up and delete apps to save memory.</p> <p>Finally, LG&#39;s excellent Knock Code feature negates the need for any fancy fingerprint scanners. Sorry, Samsung. It lets you tap out a pattern on the G3&#39;s screen (even when it&#39;s off),and with over 80,000 combinations, and a higher reliability than fingerprint scanning, LG&#39;s hit on a winner.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/7-best-apps-and-games-lg-g3/feature" target="_blank">7 of the best apps and games for the LG G3</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/ultimate-setup-lg-g3/feature" target="_blank">Ultimate setup: LG G3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="All the colours of the (LG) rainbow" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8) vs Sony Xperia Z2 vs LG G3" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG_G3_3_0.JPG?1406779973" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G3 doesn&#39;t have the exquisite build of the HTC One M8, nor does it have the extra sensors of the S5. For one thing, it has an excellent screen that, despite being larger than its rivals, doesn&#39;t increase the size of the G3 itself, thanks to LG&#39;s bezel-trimming magic.</p> <p>Its camera is superb and adaptable, and its build, although not metal, both looks and feels good. A removable battery and microSD storage are the cherries on top of an already very tasty cake.</p> <p>The S5 points to a flashy future, the Z2 a controlled one, and the One M8 continues to push design boundaries. It looks smart enough to wear with a suit and unless you get an email or phone call when someone&rsquo;s glancing at your wrist, it won&rsquo;t get much attention.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s taller and slightly chunkier but otherwise very similar to last year&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review">Sony SmartWatch 2</a>, with a plain, rectangular glass front and stainless steel frame that&rsquo;s waterproof for up to 30 minutes in 1m of water. LG hasn&rsquo;t even stuck its name anywhere apart from inside the device and there are precisely zero buttons, not even a power button. This actually isn&rsquo;t a problem day-to-day &ndash; just don&rsquo;t power off then lose the charging cradle or you&rsquo;re done for.</p> <p>Like most smartwatches it ultimately ends up looking like a mini smartphone with two watchstraps attached, but the metal sides of our Black Titan version catch the light nicely and there&rsquo;s a slightly blingier White Gold model should you wish to match your smartwatch to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3/review">your gold LG G3</a>. Plus, the straps can be swapped out for any 22mm watchstraps, and though it sits oddly flat atop the wrist it&rsquo;s fairly comfortable to wear.</p> <p>In summary, it&rsquo;s inoffensive rather than stunning. Maybe the forthcoming <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/motorola/moto-360-smartwatch-likely-be-cheaper-expected/news">Motorola Moto 360</a> will be the first true smartwatch icon.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo/review">Samsung Gear 2 review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="No icon " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-colourful-watchface.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Classic faces suit the Pebble Steel better " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-classic-watchface.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Sits flat on the wrist but is still comfortable " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-on-wrist-side.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="The only LG logo is hidden on the inside " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-inside.png?1405905078" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen - Lovely (in an ordinary sort of way) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Android Wear&rsquo;s colourful cards and icons look great on the G Watch&rsquo;s fairly big 1.65in screen and make the e-paper Pebble Steel seem even more retro. It&rsquo;s not exactly sharp at 290x290 and with its 1.63in 320x320 display the incoming <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/gear-live/google-io-2014/samsung-reveals-gear-live-its-first-android-wear-smartwatch/news">Samsung Gear Live</a> will make it look positively archaic. The Samsung will be AMOLED too so it should be easy to read even in direct sunlight - the G Watch is tricky to make out in the sun. Still, there&rsquo;s a brightness toggle with six options in the settings, which helps a bit.</p> <p>Our biggest problem with the screen is that the G Watch&rsquo;s motion sensor is supposed to wake it up from dimmed whenever we tilt our wrist, but this is really hit and miss. More often than not, we&rsquo;ve been tapping the screen to wake it. It&rsquo;s also a fingerprint magnet, so you&rsquo;ll find yourself wiping it with your sleeve throughout the day.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/martian/martian-notifier/review">Martian Notifier review&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Good colours, bad waking up abilities " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-colour-face.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Text is easy to read but the Gear Live is sharper " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-missed-call.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G Watch Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 1.65-inch LCD IPS (280X280)</p> <p>OS: Android Wear</p> <p>Processor: 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor</p> <p>RAM: 512MB</p> <p>Storage: 4GB</p> <p>Bluetooth: 4.0</p> <p>Water &amp; Dust Resistance: IP67</p> <p>Battery: Li-Polymer 400mAh</p> <p>Strap size: 22mm (Interchangeable)</p> <p>Dimensions: 37.9 X 46.5 X 9.95mm</p> <p>Weight: 63g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Runs Fast, Drains Faster </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG&rsquo;s done a good job making sure Android Wear performs excellently here. There&rsquo;s no stutters when opening agendas or swiping away notification cards and the Bluetooth connection is steady.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s no surprise considering the G Watch is as powerful as some mid-range phones. It runs on the same processor as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">HTC One Mini 2</a>, Qualcomm&rsquo;s Snapdragon 400, which you might think is overkill considering all it has to do is display Google Now cards and take care of voice input.</p> <p>So that&rsquo;s that. Smooth sailing. Battery life, though, is a problem. LG&rsquo;s stuffed a big (for a smartwatch) 400mAh battery into the G Watch; that&rsquo;s larger than those in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/gear-live/google-io-2014/samsung-reveals-gear-live-its-first-android-wear-smartwatch/news">Gear Live</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review">SmartWatch 2</a>. But even though LG quotes 36 hours for it, we haven&rsquo;t managed that yet, instead getting no more than 24 hours of use out of it. And that&rsquo;s a pain.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not entirely LG&rsquo;s fault - Android Wear is busy, colourful and designed for mini LCD screens such as the G Watch&rsquo;s, so it was never going to compete with the e-paper <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble Steel&rsquo;s five-day battery life</a>. Nor do we expect the Gear Live to last any longer. But that Snapdragon chip was probably unnecessary - the Pebble gets by just fine on a 80MHz ARM processor - and we&rsquo;re sure more can be done by Google to optimise Wear for smartwatch batteries.</p> <p>Having to charge it once a day is bad enough but there&rsquo;s a charging cradle to contend with, too. While a little annoying - heaven help you if you lose it - it&rsquo;s a well designed bit of kit, holding the G Watch securely in place via the magic of magnetism. Plus, its inclusion means there&rsquo;s no need for a microUSB port to ruin the G Watch&rsquo;s sleek lines.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review - the best smartphone money can buy&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Boop - pull down for the date and battery " alt="LG G Watch review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-battery.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The neat charging cradle " alt="LG G Watch review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-watch-review-charging-cradle.jpg?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android Wear - defining the smartwatch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>After living with it for a few days, it&rsquo;s obvious that Android Wear is the future of smartwatches. Yes, it&rsquo;s rough around the edges and needs tons of tweaks before it&rsquo;s perfect, and yes, it&rsquo;s early days for third-party apps. But the basics are so exciting that you won&rsquo;t care.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll dive into more detail in our full review of Android Wear - coming very soon - but for now, here&rsquo;s what you need to know. Like any Android Wear smartwatch, the G Watch pairs to an Android phone running Jelly Bean and above via Bluetooth. Wear pushes phone notifications - calls, texts, emails, social media, calendar appointments - to the watch and manages everything in the free Android Wear app.</p> <p>But unlike other smartwatch operating systems, Wear also displays &lsquo;cards&rsquo; - basically Google Now, miniaturised - containing info on anything it thinks you might need. That means handy weather and calendar cards first thing in the morning; bus times for the bus stop you&rsquo;re heading towards; the number of minutes it&rsquo;ll take you to walk to the pub you looked up on Google Maps (on your phone) a few hours earlier.</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/MxWlODvg265/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>That&rsquo;s not to say it always gets it right. Google&rsquo;s making educated guesses on what you might find useful and when you&rsquo;re being buzzed by the G Watch 100 times a day thanks to work emails, being told you&rsquo;re ten minutes away from home for no reason can grate. That&rsquo;s not helped by the lack of granular control over which notifications come through - something we hope Google fixes quickly. For now, it&rsquo;s all or nothing.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s more than just a mind-reader, though. Gmails, for instance, pop up on the screen and can be opened with a tap then read in full by scrolling down. It&rsquo;s also damn good looking, with full-screen photos behind the text, colourful icons and big round action buttons such as &lsquo;Open on phone&rsquo; accessed by a swipe to the left. And there&rsquo;s a decent, if not huge, selection of watchface styles to choose from.</p> <p>And then there&rsquo;s the voice control...</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/oneplus-one/review">OnePlus One review - the king of the budget smartphones</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Wear&#039;s location smarts are insanely clever " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-time-to-home.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s egg past frying pan " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-egg-face.png?1405905079" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Swipe left for actions like open on phone " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-open-on-phone.png?1405905078" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Watchfaces can look cooler when the screen&#039;s dimmed " alt="LG G Watch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-G-Watch-review-monochrome-face.png?1405905078" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Voice - the best we&#039;ve used on a wearable yet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Proof that this is the most impressive voice control we&rsquo;ve seen on a wearable? We&rsquo;ve used the feature every day we&rsquo;ve had the G Watch so far. On our sofa and on the street. And for the most part, it&rsquo;s worked.</p> <p>The G Watch doesn&rsquo;t need to be millimetres from your mouth to pick up your commands, which helps. &lsquo;OK Google&rsquo; launches voice when the screen is awake but we found a tap to wake (if the motion sensor doesn&rsquo;t kick in) and another tap to access the &lsquo;Speak now&rsquo; screen works best.</p> <p>So what can you do? The most used app here will probably be navigation - just say &lsquo; How do I get to..?/Navigate to&rsquo; and Google will pull up the route on your phone. It hasn&#39;t worked everytime on our review unit but hopefully this will get more reliable and maps will make the leap over to the watch itself.<iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/Mx7ZLHEHrJY/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>Also useful are &lsquo;Text/email Mum&rsquo; type commands which work better for short messages where you don&rsquo;t care about punctuation rather than for full-blown emails. The voice recognition isn&rsquo;t 100% spot-on but it&rsquo;s good enough to use - just be careful with hard-to-pronounce names and be prepared to swiftly hit the &lsquo;x&rsquo; if it chooses the wrong contact.</p> <p>Of course there are lots of times when you won&rsquo;t want to use voice, so with one tap on the watchface and a tap of the arrow you can access your calendar, steps and settings without uttering a word. It doesn&rsquo;t speak back to you like a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo/review">Gear 2</a> does, but it can do if you hook up LG&rsquo;s Tone+ Bluetooth headset.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/android-45/review">Android L preview - everything you need to know about Google&#39;s new OS&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Get voice control stagefright? Album artwork and a play/pause button appear onscreen when listening to the service on the paired smartphone but that&rsquo;s it. Google Play Music, on the other hand, gets voice control to start and skip tracks.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the FlyDelta app supports QR code boarding passes, Bunting takes care of voice tweeting and RunTastic is the first of the third-party fitness apps to get onboard.
