But the G3 promises to be better still.</p> <p>It has the same 13MP sensor as the G2 but its optical image stabilisation has been upgraded to the OIS+ version. This uses software tricks to improve the stabilisation performance and it&nbsp;should mean that the G2&#39;s already impressive low-light abilities are enhanced on the new phone.</p> <p>Indeed, we&#39;ve seen it before in LG&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g-pro-2/review">G Pro 2</a> phablet, and stated in our review that it is &quot;a real belter with night-time shots&quot;. And you can&#39;t argue with that.</p> <p>Another feature which should improve night-time shooting is the addition of a laser autofocus assist. This sits next to the camera sensor and helps it measure distance - and therefore find focus - in dim conditions. And on the other side of the sensor there&#39;s a further aid in the form of a dual-LED flash.</p> <p>And as if that&#39;s not enough of an improvement, you also now get 4K video thrown in. You don&#39;t want 4K video? Of course you do. What else are you going to watch on your 2K screen?</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Better camera" alt="LG G3 vs G2: 10 reasons to upgrade" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC_00312_0.jpg?1401773324" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 2. Now the G2&#39;s battery life is pretty much the best we&#39;ve seen on a high-end smartphone, but the G3 has the same size 3000mAh cell and a bigger screen to power. LG claims it will last for at least as long as its predecessor, but even if it does, there are times when carrying a spare could save your bacon.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Swappable battery" alt="LG G3 vs G2: 10 reasons to upgrade" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC_0039_0_0.jpg?1401773324" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 3. The G3, on the other hand, has a microSD slot which can accept cards of up to 128GB in size. That&#39;s particularly good news given that the 32GB version won&#39;t be coming to UK for some time yet, if at all. Still, 144GB should be enough for most people.</p> <p>But that&#39;s not all. According to LG&#39;s own tech specs for the device, the G3 supports microSD cards of up to 2TB in size. Now don&#39;t get too excited - you can&#39;t actually buy microSD cards of that size yet, and even if you could the cost would probably be prohibitive. But all the same, it&#39;s good to be prepared.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4. The fact is, the G3 doesn&#39;t have a premium metal body like the HTC One (M8). What it does have is a classy plastic back that&#39;s designed to look like brushed metal. And after spending some time with it, we&#39;re happy with the compromise. It&#39;s lighter than the M8 and the fact that it&#39;s made of plastic means the back can be removed to allow for the swappable battery, wireless charging and microSD slot. Nor did we notice any creaking or flexing of the case.</p> <p>The other key to the G3&#39;s swish design is the almost bezel-free front and button-free sides. All of which is made possible by the fact that the buttons are round the back. Plus, the buttons themselves have been made bigger and more attractive. Not that you&#39;ll be looking at them very much.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1196" height="900" title="Premium looks" alt="LG G3 vs G2: 10 reasons to upgrade" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG_G3_3.jpg?1401773324" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 5. More importantly, it should be louder - it&#39;s now a 1W affair with boost amplification, and according to LG it will provide richer sounds and clearer tones. Which, given that the G3 supports hi-res audio, is no bad thing. We&#39;re yet to test it against the HTC One (M8), which offers the best speakers of any phone we&#39;ve used, but the G3 should at least sound better than the rather weedy G2.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g3/lg-g3-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">LG G3 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Louder speaker" alt="LG G3 vs G2: 10 reasons to upgrade" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG_G3_Metallic_Black_Back_0.jpg?1401773324" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 6. But it has seen fit to include a few new apps of its own. Come on, no manufacturer would ever release a new phone without including a few vanity projects.</p> <p>Anyway, one of the LG apps, Smart Notice, actually promises to be quite useful. It&#39;s a sort of Google Now Plus A Bit More with several tricks up its sleeve. Like Google Now, it will act all protective parent from time to time, suggesting that you take an umbrella with you if it sees that it&#39;s about to rain and that you&#39;re about to go out. Or reminding you to call someone back if you earlier rejected their call. On second thoughts, that could get quite annoying.&nbsp;Still, it&#39;ll also&nbsp;keep track of your app usage and prompt you to uninstall software you&#39;re no longer using, and that could be handy.</p> <p>The one we really like, though, is Knock Code. We&#39;ve seen it before on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g-pro-2/review">G Pro 2</a>, but seeing as none of you will have bought that phone, here&#39;s a video of it in action:</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/Mmnzlz7dD3Q/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>The G2 already has Knock On, which enables you to wake the handset with a double-tap of the screen. Knock Code takes things one step further: you set a code in the form of a sequence of taps around the screen, and can use it to wake and open your phone, without needing to input a separate PIN. From organic round curves to a solid metal body, HTC has gone all-out on the design front, and it&#39;s paid off. The M8 is one of the sexiest smartphones we&#39;ve ever held, and no other Android phone can match its build quality.</p> <p>The LG G2 isn&#39;t ugly by any means, and we&#39;re big fans of its minimalist front. Its plastic build does let it down though, and its rear power and volume button placements might not be everyone&#39;s cup of tea, although we rather like them where they are.</p> <p>The G2&#39;s footprint is substantially smaller than the M8&#39;s though, thanks to its wonderfully slim bezels. The M8&#39;s excuse for its larger size is a decent one however. Its two front-facing speakers might take up room, but they&#39;re very impressive indeed.</p> <p>The M8 wins for with its premium build and microSD slot, which the G2 lacks.&nbsp;</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>HTC One (M8)</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The HTC One (M8) in the middle, surrounded by its predecessor and G2 rival" alt="Which is better? The G2&#39;s 13MP camera is excellent and it takes detailed photos in both light and dark conditions, helped greatly by its optical image stabilisation.</p> <p>The One M8 on the other hand mixes things up a bit. For starters, it&#39;s kept the same 4.1 UltraPixel camera that graced the original One. But it&#39;s got company.</p> <p>A second lens above the main module records depth information, which means that you can focus on different subjects in a shot after you&#39;ve taken it, Lytro-style.</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S5</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g-pro-2/mwc-2014/lg-g-pro-2-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">LG G Pro 2</a> achieve this post-shot refocusing effect with software, but the One M8&#39;s dedicated second lens means that it excels in this area.</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="400" src="https://vine.co/v/MO7QbtitUa1/embed/simple" width="400"></iframe></p> <p>The G2 lacks this functionality completely and it&#39;s a big win for the M8, assuming it&#39;s a feature you plan on using regularly. Even if you think it&#39;s a gimmick, it could come in very handy for photos which accidentally have the intended subject out of focus.</p> <p>The One M8 also performs well in lowlight conditions, and its dual-LED flash provides more realistic colours and skin tones, in a similar way to the flash module found on the iPhone 5s.</p> <p>The G2 does capture finer details, but unless you&#39;re planning on cropping into or printing out large photos, you&#39;re unlikely to notice any major differences when uploading photos to the likes of Facebook.</p> <p>Throw in 4K video recording and 120fps capture on the M8 (which the G2 lacks) and HTC comes out on top in the camera round.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>HTC One (M8)</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Double trouble" alt="Which is better? Gone is the slippery plastic backside of the S5 and tacky looking faux leather of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>.</p> <p>Instead, the Note 3 has a rubbery matte dimpled polycarbonate rear panel which is wonderfully grippy, and much less likely to slip out of the hands than the slippery G2. Just try not to think about all the plaster jokes when you&#39;re holding it.</p> <p>While we&#39;re not fans of the two-tone alien blue colour, the plain Black S5 looks and feels rather smart.</p> <p>The G2 fights back with its innovative rear power and volume buttons however, and we applaud LG for cramming in a slightly larger 5.2in screen into a smaller body with super-slim bezels.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 has another weapon in its arsenal though: IP67 waterproof and dustproof certification, meaning it&#39;ll battle through a British downpour with ease.</p> <p>Overall, this round goes to the Galaxy S5. It&#39;s got a grippier rear, and its removable cover means you&#39;ve got access to a microSD slot and swappable battery - both of which are missing from the LG G2. Throw in the fact that it&#39;s waterproof and there&#39;s not much the G2&#39;s pretty slim bezelled face can do about it.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong><em>Samsung Galaxy S5</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9966_1.JPG?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6006_1.JPG?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tasty extras </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 brings two big features to the ring. Although it&#39;s arguable how useful a feature this is on a phone (it makes more sense on a smartwatch like the <a to take advantage of.</p> <p>For pushing the boundaries and for cramming in tech into every available inch of space, the Galaxy S5 wins this round too.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Samsung Galaxy Mobile World Congress and we&#39;re looking forward to it landing on all of LG&#39;s major devices this year.</p> <p>The S5 however has a very impressive (on paper at least) battery saver mode which can supposedly squeeze out an extra 24 hours of battery life with only 10% charge left on the battery.</p> <p>Once activated, the menus and screen become black and white, and all apps are frozen. You can however still make and receive calls and text messages, and we can see ourselves making full use of it on a night out, stranded from any power cables.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 also features Samsung&#39;s updated S Health app which is built into the latest version of TouchWiz. It offers detailed information on calories burned, steps taken and even calories consumed, if you can be bothered to scan in every little thing you eat all day.</p> <p>Thanks to the heart scanner on the rear you can even measure your heart rate to ensure you&#39;re not feeling too poorly. Or too excited. Or too... dead.</p> <p>Samsung&#39;s download booster mode also sounds very interesting. It&#39;s able to use both 4G and Wi-Fi connections simultaneously to download large files faster than Wi-Fi or 4G alone. Both are narrow-bezelled phones with screens around the 5in mark (more on those below) and from the front there&rsquo;s little to tell the difference between them (save the LG logo on the G2 &ndash; the Nexus 5 has an unadorned face).</p> <p>Flip them over and things get a little more interesting. The Google Nexus 5 has a rubbery, matte-finish backside with a stamped &lsquo;Nexus&rsquo; logo, which the LG G2 has a glossy plastic rear with centre-mounted camera and below it, a power/volume control button.</p> <p>The button is a bold design decision from LG &ndash; one that doesn&rsquo;t really pay off, if we&rsquo;re being honest. You&rsquo;ll often find yourself accidentally increasing the volume when trying to turn off the phone and vice versa (luckily you can tap twice on the front to bring up the unlock screen).</p> <p>The Nexus 5 is a little lighter than the G2 (130g versus 143g); both handsets are just under 9mm in depth. As we noted in our Nexus 5 review, it feels a little more pocket-friendly than the G2.</p> <p>Both phones have a useful notification LED on the front, which pulses in different colours depending on the app about which it&rsquo;s notifying you.</p> <p><strong>Winner: The Nexus 5 takes this round for its slight portability edge and handsome backside.</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G2 rear" alt="LG G2 rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-rear.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 rear" alt="Google Nexus 5 rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-rear.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen legends </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G2 boasts a glorious 5.2in full HD display with a pixel density of 423ppi, while the Nexus 5 has a 4.95in full HD screen with 445ppi. So there&rsquo;s barely anything between them here: the G2&rsquo;s is slightly larger, yes, but the Nexus 5&rsquo;s is a wee bit sharper.</p> <p>There are some subtle differences it&rsquo;s worth noting, however. The Nexus 5&rsquo;s screen is a little cooler than the G2&rsquo;s, and some might even call it &ldquo;washed out&rdquo; at times. The G2 sports one of the richest, brightest and most vivid screens around at the moment, and offers great viewing angles too (better than the Nexus 5&rsquo;s), so we&rsquo;re going to give this round to LG&rsquo;s phone rather than Google&rsquo;s. Both have 2GB of RAM and a choice of 16GB and 32GB models when it comes to built-in storage. Both have NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 (although only the G2 supports Low Energy). The G2 also comes with an IR blaster that, in tandem with an app, allows it to act as a remote control for pretty much any device.</p> <p>Both, when you boil it down, are hugely capable and hugely powerful phones. There might theoretically be faster hardware out there, but in real world terms neither of these devices will struggle cope with any app you might care throw at them.</p> <p>One area where the G2 moves ahead is battery life, however. Its 3,000mAh battery is a stonker: we managed to get a good 19 hours of normal use out of the phone before it dropped to five percent battery and we reached for the charger. The Nexus 5 has a 2,300mAh battery and, while it fares a little better than its fast-depleted predecessor the Nexus 4, it doesn&rsquo;t come close to touching the G2 (or Samsung Galaxy S4, for that matter) when it comes to longevity.</p> <p>We should also mention music playback, because while the Nexus 5 is as good as pretty much any other phone out there, the G2 has an ace up its sleeve: support for 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res Audio files. Whack in a pair of decent headphones and you can listen to studio master quality tunes.</p> <p><strong>Winner: The LG G2 for its battery and handful of additional features</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/why-you-should-be-pumped-about-and-just-bit-sceptical-hi-res-audio/feature" target="_blank">Why you should be pumped about (and just a bit sceptical of) Hi-Res Audio</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G2 hi-res audio" alt="LG G2 hi-res audio" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-hi-res-audio.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd">

The stabilisation helps immensely in dim, murky conditions &ndash; an area where phone cameras are traditionally at their worst &ndash; allowing you to capture sharper shots at night and indoors, even with the flash turned off. Colour reproduction is impressive too.</p> <p>The Google Nexus 5 has an 8MP main camera that also comes with optical image stabilisation. It&rsquo;s a massive improvement over the disappointing Nexus 4 camera and provides lovely, sharp detail in low light (our review points out that it even compares favourably to the G2 in this regard). A recent software update gave it a speedy new autofocus and boosted the vibrancy and contrast of photos, but we do feel the G2&rsquo;s camera is better at accurately representing real-life colours.</p> <p>On the video front, the G2 captures 1080p at a smooth 60fps while the Nexus 5 is limited to 30fps. Other than that both do a respectable job. We don&rsquo;t put too much importance on a smartphone&rsquo;s front-facing camera, but the G2&rsquo;s 2.1MP sensor has a slight edge over the Nexus 5&rsquo;s 1.3MP example.</p> <p><strong>Winner: We have to give this round to LG, although it&rsquo;s tighter than you might imagine</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 camera" alt="Google Nexus 5 camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera_3.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android vs Android </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus 5 sports Android 4.4.1 KitKat, the clean &ldquo;stock&rdquo; version of Android beloved by purists. As a personal assistant, Google Now has the beating of Apple&rsquo;s Siri &ndash; often because it seems to know what you want before you even search.</p> <p>The G2 comes with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, over which LG has pasted a skin of its own design. It&rsquo;s a bit cartoonish and over-egged (the transitions are particularly OTT) and aesthetes will definitely prefer the Nexus 5&rsquo;s less-is-more approach, but there are some nice touches here: eye-tracking pauses videos when you look away; the Clip Tray feature stores everything you&rsquo;ve cut or copied in the past; and Guest Mode means you can hand off the phone to anyone without having to worry about them making in-app purchases or opening any apps you&rsquo;ve restricted.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Close again, but we&rsquo;re going to give this one to the Nexus 5</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Now on Nexus 5" alt="Google Now on Nexus 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-google-now_3.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G2 UI" alt="LG G2 UI" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-ui.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Price – not so close </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Without putting too fine a point on it, the Google Nexus 5 is an absolute bargain. And that&rsquo;s great if you&rsquo;re looking to by an Android phone anyway.</p> <p>The LG G2 is yet to be announced in Malaysia, but when it is, it isn&#39;t going to come cheap. The fleeting moments we spent with it during our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/g2/lg-g2-hands-review/news-0" target="_blank">hands-on review</a> weren’t enough to get to know it properly, so the prospect of taking it out for a few fancy dinners and really getting to know it had our stomachs fluttering with butterflies. Resembling a slightly squarer <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/google-nexus-4/review" target="_blank">Nexus 4</a>, its gorgeously slick glossy black finish is accented by two complementary sprinkles of silver: the speaker at the top and the LG logo at the bottom. Simple, clean, and very pleasant on the eyeballs.</p> <p>Turn the screen on and you’ll praise whichever LG designer was responsible for slicing the bezels down to size. While it hasn’t quite got an edge-to-edge display, there’s very little space either side of the 5.2in screen. Haters of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One’s capacitive buttons will be pleased to hear that the LG has opted for on-screen buttons, too.</p> <p>While it’s a little wider, taller (and ever so slightly thicker) than the Samsung Galaxy S4, we prefer the looks of the G2’s squarer corners and it just feels a tad more comfortable in the hands, although it’s sadly just as slippery.</p> <p>Like the S4, the G2 is rocking a plastic suit, so it too gets outclassed by the outstanding all-metal HTC One. That’s not to say that the G2 isn’t solidly built. We couldn’t get a creak or flex out of it despite twisting it as hard as we dared (don’t worry, LG, it’s absolutely fine), while the same can’t be said for our Galaxy S4.</p> <p>Granted, our S4 has been knocked and banged around the Stuff office since launch, but the G2’s non-removable back cover does provide a little more rigidity, at the cost of battery promiscuity.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A little bigger, but a little nicer than the Galaxy S4" alt="A little bigger, but a little nicer than the Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6010.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The buttoned-up back </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You’ll notice that we’ve yet to talk about the G2’s rear end. That’s because we wanted to ease you into it. It’s a bit… different, you see.&nbsp;</p> <p>Remember the compliments we lavished on the G2’s wonderfully slim bezels? They were made possible because the G2 doesn’t sport volume and power buttons on its side. They’ve been shifted around to the back, sitting beneath the camera lens, glaring at us and daring us to say anything about them being out of place.&nbsp;</p> <p>Glaring or not, we’re going to be honest: for the first day we hated the position of the power button. LG’s logic was to place it on the rear, where your index finger naturally rests for quick and easy access, but we were still hitting the ‘volume up’ button eight times out of ten.</p> <p>Our love affair with LG’s designer was over, and we were cursing his nameless face when we accidentally deafened ourselves to the angry rants of Eminem, when all we wanted to do was turn on the display.</p> <p>Then we remembered that the LG G2 has a very, very useful trick up its sleeve. Like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/blackberry/blackberry-z10/review" target="_blank">BlackBerry Z10</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/blackberry/blackberry-q10/review" target="_blank">Q10</a> and Q5, the G2’s screen can detect touch input even when it’s off.&nbsp;</p> <p>Simply tap twice on the screen and you’ll be greeted with the lock screen. Once you’ve glanced at the time and seen your notifications, you can swipe to unlock as normal, or give it another double tap to turn the screen off.</p> <p>LG calls this KnockOn. We call it the Tap of Life, which we think you’ll agree has a much better ring to it.</p> <p>It’s a great idea and makes you feel like you’re knocking on a door that opens into your smartphone. It also works from the Home screen, but make sure you don’t completely fill that up with app icons because it needs an empty space to work.</p> <p>After a while we also got used to the raised bump of the power button and were mishitting it less and less. It’s still not as convenient as a side-mounted power button, especially when you have to lift it off the table to turn the screen off, but it’s not as bad as you might at first assume.</p> <p>Aside from that, the plastic rear panel of the G2 feels very sturdy and has a rather unassuming and faint diagonal pinstripe design that catches the light a little. It’s nowhere near as glittery or as exciting as the disco ball booty of the Nexus 4, but it’s nice nonetheless.</p> <p>Given that you’re probably doing something very, very wrong if you spend most of your time looking at the rear of your smartphone, you should be more than happy with the sleek and sexy front of the G2.</p> <p>The power button lights up for notifications and there’s also a notification LED on the front. Both are customisable with different colours for different apps, which is a useful touch.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Those buttons on the back take some getting used to" alt="Those buttons on the back take some getting used to" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6006.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s plastic, but more stylish plastic than on the S4" alt="It&#039;s plastic, but more stylish plastic than on the S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6011.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen dreams </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G2 packs a 5.2in full HD IPD display, and it’s absolutely glorious. It’s cramming together 423 pixels per inch, which while just a touch short of the figures of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/sony-xperia-z/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z</a> (443ppi), Samsung Galaxy S4 (441ppi) and HTC One (469ppi), in reality looks razor sharp.</p> <p>It’s also bright enough to negate the need to up the brightness to 100 per cent, out-shining the HTC One, which we feel could do with cranking things up a touch more in the luminosity department.</p> <p>1080p video looks breath-taking, with crystal clear detail and bright, vivid and natural colours making our eyeballs clap with appreciation.&nbsp;</p> <p>Lined up next to the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, the LG G2’s screen does very well indeed. We prefer both the HTC One and G2’s display to the over-saturated colours of the Galaxy S4, and while the G2’s colours are just a smidge warmer than the HTC One, it produces ever-so-slightly whiter whites, with noticeably truer blacks.</p> <p>If you strap an electron microscope onto your face, you might say that the HTC One is ever so slightly sharper (which you'd probably expect as the smaller screen size equates to greater pixel density) but in real life you’re unlikely to notice a difference in sharpness between the two.</p> <p>Viewing angles are also excellent, especially compared to the Xperia Z, which suffers from very noticeable de-saturation when viewed off-centre.</p> <p>Overall it’s extremely close between the HTC One and the G2 screens, but we’re giving this round to the G2 thanks to its bigger size and deeper blacks.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The screen is a stunner" alt="The screen is a stunner" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6031.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Hi-res photos look fantastic on the G2 screen" alt="Hi-res photos look fantastic on the G2 screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6027.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The most powerful phone we&#039;ve tested </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/ifa-2013/sony-xperia-z1-launches-ifa-2013/news" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z1</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/sony/sony-xperia-z-ultra-hands-review/news" target="_blank">Z Ultra</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/galaxy-note-3/ifa-2013/hands-review-samsung-galaxy-note-3/news" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>, the LG G2 harnesses the power off the earth-shattering Snapdragon 800 processor. Qualcomm’s beastly sliver of silicon has been praised around the techosphere for its raw power, but does it actually deliver it from deep within the depths of the G2?</p> <p>Oh yes.</p> <p>First things first, let’s get numbers out the way – we’re not the types to get bogged down in benchmarks, but they often provide a useful point of comparison.</p> <p>We ran the latest version of AnTuTu benchmark on the G2 and it walloped the competition with a score of 34,191.</p> <p>If you’re not impressed, let’s add a dash of perspective to things. The G2 ranks first, with the HTC One coming in second place with 25,651. The only other products that rank higher than the G2 in AnTuTu’s Top 20 list are Nvidia’s Shield and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, and they’re not scoring much higher.</p> <p>Right, that’s the numbers done, we promise. Let’s talk reality.</p> <p>The G2 runs Android 4.2.2 about as smooth as we’ve seen it, with hardly any stuttering or hesitation in sight. We’ve thrown handfuls of simultaneously running apps at it, played the latest, most demanding 3D games, watched 1080p videos and browsed the web, and the G2 has lapped it all up, laughing as it mockingly asked if that’s all we could throw at it.</p> <p>Given all that, it’s no surprise to hear that the G2 is a fine web browsing machine, loading up sites quickly and without any hint of complaint. Text re-flow and scrolling is nice and smooth and there’s a handy feature called Capture Plus, which saves the entirety of a webpage as a picture for offline viewing.&nbsp;</p> <p>Those of you sporting 4G contracts will also be able to surf the interwebs at high speeds while you're out and about, thanks to the G2’s 4G smarts.</p> <p>Oddly enough the tiny bit of lag we did notice was waiting a few extra milliseconds for text messages to load when viewing threads from different contacts. It won’t be noticeable in everyday use, but while reviewing a smartphone and actively looking for any slowdown, it’s an odd thing that we picked up.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="No game is too demanding for the LG G2" alt="No game is too demanding for the LG G2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6020.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Web browsing is lightning quick, especially on 4G" alt="Web browsing is lightning quick, especially on 4G" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6023.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G2 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Operating System - Android 4.2.2</p> <p>Processor - 2.26GHz Qualcom Snapdragon 800 /w quad-core Krait CPU</p> <p>RAM - 2GB</p> <p>Screen - 5.2in IPS with 1920x1080 resolution (423ppi)</p> <p>Camera - 13MP rear, 2MP front</p> <p>Storage - 16/32GB (not expandable)</p> <p>Data - 4G LTE</p> <p>Battery - 3000mAh</p> <p>Dimensions - 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9mm</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A camera of serious quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like the Samsung Galaxy S4, the LG G2 boasts a 13MP camera – with the added bonus of Optical Image Stabilisation – and the G2 bests Samsung’s snapper in both well-lit and low-light conditions.</p> <p>The G2 serves up noticeably sharper shots in good light, with more detail on offer, while the Galaxy S4’s shots are softer by comparison, with colours that appear a little washed-out.</p> <p>The G2 offers particularly impressive shots in low light conditions even without its flash turned on, capturing much sharper images with noticeably more detail than its Samsung counterpart can manage. It’s still got the typical grain and noise that plagues all camera phones, but it’s definitely not bad and more than good enough for recording your antics on a dimly-lit night out in town.</p> <p>Turn both flashes on in the dark, and it’s much closer. The G2’s whites are truer and its colours are slightly less washed-out, but there’s not much in it. Both devices perform well with little to no noise or fuzziness present.</p> <p>The LG G2 can record crisp, clear full HD 1080p video at an impressive 60 frames per second (a figure that its rivals can’t match) and video is as clear and as crisp as you’d expect, with smooth playback.&nbsp;</p> <p>We asked LG about 4K recording (which the Snapdragon 800 CPU supports) and were told that it could be possible with a future firmware upgrade like Android 4.4 KitKat. With so few 4K sets in living rooms though, not to mention the storage space issues such large files will cause, LG doesn't feel that lack of 4K recording at launch is a pressing issue.</p> <p>It’s also got an interesting Tracking Zoom function that lets you select a subject while recording, after which the viewfinder is automatically zoomed in on them while they’re moving around. You can even do this post-shooting in the built-in video player.</p> <p>Another feature worth mentioning is Audio Zoom, which lets you focus on recording sound from the point that you choose to zoom into. Again, this can also be done post-recording during playback. We haven’t had time to go to any gigs or presentations to really test it out, but it’s an interesting concept.</p> <p>Disappointingly however, if you’re recording yourself walking around or moving while holding the G2 there’s a lot of motion blur that makes it difficult to watch back. The Optical Image Stabilisation clearly isn’t as accomplished as it could be.</p> <p>As with the S4, there are tonnes of camera extras, including a dual camera mode that lets you take a picture of you and your subject simultaneously. It’s debatable whether or not you’ll actually use it, but one that does impress is the Virtual Reality Panorama feature which stiches together impressive full 360 degree panoramas that you can then virtually pan around using the accelerometer. Sadly you can’t turn these into Photosphere planets like you can on the Nexus 4, unless you side-load its gallery app, of course.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4160" height="3120" title="Showing off the G2&#039;s crisp detail with an early evening shot" alt="Showing off the G2&#039;s crisp detail with an early evening shot" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-garden-evening.jpg?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Good light camera comparison" alt="Good light camera comparison" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/G2%20vs%20S4%20fruit%20lights%20on.jpg?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Low light camera comparison" alt="Low light camera comparison" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/G2%20vs%20S4%20fruit%20dark.jpg?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Mixed light camera comparison" alt="Mixed light camera comparison" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/G2%20vs%20S4%20office.jpg?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Thick-skinned with some useful apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG has taken the Samsung approach to Android by cramming an absolutely monstrous number of software extras and modifications into the G2, for better and for worse.</p> <p>Aesthetically, we don’t dislike LG’s skin as much as Samsung’s TouchWiz, but it’s almost as cartoony. &nbsp;Resembling nothing like stock vanilla Android, the G2’s been skinned with LG’s own icons and menus, topped off with over-the-top transition animations that would probably bring lesser hardware to a grinding halt.</p> <p>They’re nice to have if you want to show off some funky unlock animations to your mates, but after swiping to unlock with a giant crystal appearing beneath your fingertip for the 50th time, you’ll want to go for something a little more subtle. Or just load up an alternative launcher – hooray for Android.</p> <p>In terms of software extras, we almost don’t know where to begin. The G2 has the same eye-watching smarts as the Galaxy S4 (called Smart Screen as opposed to Samsung’s Smart Stay), meaning it knows when you’re looking at it so it can automatically pause videos and turn the screen off when you’re not paying attention. It’ll also automatically answer calls when you bring it to your ear.</p> <p>The G2 also has an IR blaster and a useful Quick Remote app that you can access directly from the dropdown menu. Even if it won’t operate your TV and home cinema kit first time, it can ‘learn’ from your existing remotes with a couple of button presses and it’s a genuinely useful tool for channel hopping in style.</p> <p>Other useful tweaks include Plug &amp; Pop (all these features have cheesy names, just to warn you), which brings up a contextual menu each time you plug in your headphones or microUSB cable. Plug in your headphones and you can choose which music apps to launch, including YouTube.&nbsp;</p> <p>The microUSB cable automatically pulls up a menu asking you if you want to simply charge your phone via USB or transfer files, saving you from having to select it manually from the dropdown menu.</p> <p>QSlide lets you open up to two selected apps from the notification menu and you can drag them around like widgets, interacting with them and laying them over whatever you’re currently doing for some quick-fire multitasking shenanigans.</p> <p>Slide Aside acts like alt-tab in Windows, letting you quickly rotate through up to three apps of your choosing. To save an app to a Slide Aside you have to cumbersomely swipe three fingers across the screen. We found ourselves using the traditional Android open apps menu faster, but as long as Qualcomm’s silicon can handle all these extras, we suppose there’s no harm for LG to chuck it in.</p> <p>Clip Tray is a far more agreeable feature. It lets you save and access everything you’ve cut or copied in the past, letting you pick and choose text and photos before pasting them into emails, messages and notes. It’s a serial cut’n’paster’s best friend.</p> <p>As with Samsung’s TouchWiz Android tweaks, we could do without some of the G2’s software extras like Smart Screen. It’s just another button to add to the clutter of options, and while it works well, the time it takes to press pause or turn the screen off when you’re looking at it makes it seem like more of a me-too feature than a necessity, and the G2 can hold its own against the S4 without having to rely on software tricks.</p> <p>Still, the programmable remote is very useful for reducing sofa clutter and QSlide, despite its awkward name, came in handy for browsing the web while simultaneously making notes on our morning commute. But we’ve saved the best feature till last, and it’s special enough to warrant its own special section…</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Unnecessary animations, but they&#039;re good for showing off" alt="Unnecessary animations, but they&#039;re good for showing off" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6015.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The IR blaster and Quick Remote app are a handy combo" alt="The IR blaster and Quick Remote app are a handy combo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6021.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Multi-tasking ain&#039;t no thang" alt="Multi-tasking ain&#039;t no thang" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6034.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Guest Mode </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This, mums and dads, is the answer to your prayers. For many that’s a deal-breaker, and it’s one advantage that the Galaxy S4 has over many of its rivals, including the G2.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, the G2 has a large 3000mAh battery as well as something called GRAM. Graphic RAM, according to LG, can reduce power consumption of the G2 by up to 26 per cent, providing an extra 10 per cent of battery life.&nbsp;</p> <p>It’s all got to do with the GRAM memorising still frames and reducing the number of times the screen is refreshed when nothing on it is changing, such as when you’re reading an article online for example.</p> <p>In all honesty, how it does it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that the LG G2 delivers battery life in spades.</p> <p>In one day, it lasted a little over 19 hours before it hit five per cent and we jumped for the charger. During that time, Wi-Fi was on the entire time and we streamed two hours of music through Rdio to Bluetooth speakers.&nbsp;</p> <p>Granted we only made one brief phone call in that time, but texts and emails were hammered out with regularity, and the G2 was also being put through its paces for this very review, with Benchmarks and 3D games being fed to it throughout the day.</p> <p>Throw in some camera and video work and plenty of web browsing and that 19 hour battery life is very solid indeed.</p> <p>Not only that, but it charges quickly, too, sucking up around 30 per cent of juice in a little under 20 minutes. We'd still upgrade if possible (think <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/soundmagic-e10/review" target="_blank">SoundMagic E10s</a> as a starting point), but if not, the bundled buds will more than suffice.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The G2&#039;s the first phone to support 24bit audio" alt="The G2&#039;s the first phone to support 24bit audio" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6026.JPG?1391707400" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We can’t remember ever being particularly excited about an LG phone, but the G2 changed that when its specs were released, and to our great amazement the G2 is just as brilliant in the flesh as it is on paper.</p> <p>It dispatches its arch-rival’s offering with relative ease. This is a faster, nicer-screened and crisper-cameraed device than the Samsung Galaxy S4, and while both have plastic shells, the LG’s looks and feels more sexy and solid.</p> <p>It can’t match the HTC One for looks and build, and LG’s skin isn’t as slick or accomplished as HTC’s Sense UI, but in just about every other way the LG is the better device.</p> <p>Its quirky button arrangement takes some getting used to, but its gorgeous screen, excellent camera and electrifyingly fast performance matched to quite exceptional battery life are worth those first few days of fumbling around the back.</p> <p>The only smidge of reservation we have is that we’re expecting the Nexus 5 to bear more than a passing resemblance to the G2 and have stock Android on its side.</p> <p>That’s largely educated It also has wide viewing angles (not hugely important for a phone but nice all the same) and deep, inky blacks.</p> <p>The Samsung S4’s 5in Super AMOLED matches G2 for resolution, while the iPhone 5’s 4in LCD Retina display features 1136 x 640 pixels, putting it at the bottom of this particular pile.</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z1's LCD offers the same 1920 x 1080 resolution in a 5in size, so it's slightly sharper than the G2. Of course, the One’s sensor has an “UltraPixel” design that cuts down the number of pixels in order to make each individual pixel larger and more effective in low light. So it’s not really helpful to merely compare megapixel counts when discussing which camera is best. There’s also the quality of the lens, colour reproduction and contrast to consider. The iPhone 5, for instance, is widely regarded as better for photos than the Galaxy S4 despite its smaller number of megapixels.</p> <p>In testing the G2's snapper proves as impressive as it looks on paper. It's particularly adept in low light, even with the flash turned off, delivering far sharper shots than the Samsung S4. The colours pop more too.</p> <p>The Xperia Z1 seems most likely to prove a formidable opponent when it comes to camera quality (although the G2 still holds the optical stabilisation card). The bezels are so unnoticeable, frankly they should be embarrassed.</p> <p>Viewing angles are superb, as is to be expected from an IPS display, and the G2 also bests the likes of the HTC One and Nexus 4 (the latter being the last LG phone hardware of note) in terms of brightness. The 8x zoom for stills and video is much more useful than, say, the 4MP UltraPixel camera on the HTC One, making it more of an all-rounder for smartphone shots. The optical image stabilisation also works a treat to counterbalance shaky hands.</p> <p>Gimmicks such as Tracking Zoom, which magnifies a subject within the picture and layers that zoomed-in video on top of the background footage, don't seem hugely useful at first glance. Prices haven't been announced but we're guessing this will set us back £500+, and the design doesn't entirely reflect the flagship price and spec.</p> <p>If you're afflicted with tiny fingers, the buttons on the back of the phone won't exactly help matters. Volume keys and a power/lock/camera button are placed just underneath the 13MP snapper – in theory to make them easier to press, and less likely to result in your smartphone divebombing headfirst into the kerb. KnockOn works well too – double tap the screen to wake the phone up and double tap the status bar to sleep.</p> <p>We did get some <em>deja vu</em> as we've seen features such as guest modes, pick up to answer call and Plug 'n' Play (which brings up media apps when you stick your earphones into the jack on the bottom) before on rival handsets. <em>Cough</em> Galaxy S4 <em>cough</em>.</p> <p>And one addition that seems less useful is sliding apps – swipe with three fingers to bring up an alternative selection of recently used apps. It works quickly enough, but then so does the standard multi-tasking screen.</p> <p>The G2's new UI introduces a few stutters in screen transitions, but nothing we wouldn't expect to be quickly ironed out. A bigger problem is that, as with Samsung's TouchWiz, it's all too easy to find yourself in an app or a menu not knowing how you got there. That's something that rarely happens in iOS or stock Android.</p> <p>Elsewhere, performance in our test LG G2 was flawless – as you'd expect with a 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM under the hood. We edited some HD video, flitted between apps and generally tried to work the G2 up into a sweat, but it stayed classy. We weren't able to try out any games or download anything via Wi-Fi or LTE-A, and as you'd expect, we haven't yet gleaned any info about the battery life its monster 3,000mAh cell can deliver yet either. All in good time.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-guest-mode.jpg?1380669197" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-side.jpg?1380669197" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-settings.jpg?1380669197" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G2 vs The Rivals </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Let's be honest here, the G2 and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review">Galaxy S4</a> could have been separated at birth. It is a big phone to hold, but if that's OK for you, you'll be rewarded with a stunning screen, promising camera and a mighty processor that we can't wait to test out properly. None of the extra features, or the rear buttons, are enough to sway us to calling this an S4 (or HTC One) killer just yet, but some of the G2's UI tricks could prove to be growers.</p> <p>There are a couple of glaring issues the G2 faces. It's got the slightly lacklustre fit and finish of an S4, but doesn't have the S4's excuse of expandable storage and swappable battery. As with the HTC One, the specs are fixed from day one, but unlike with the HTC One, you won't own the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/htc/stuff-cool-list-2013-how-htc-designed-world-s-most-desirable-phone/feature">sexiest phone</a> on the planet.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, there's a lot here to be impressed with. Following the huge success of the Nexus 4, it looks like LG is finally getting into its smartphone stride. We'll find out if it can trouble the HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4 at the top of our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartphones/top-ten">Smartphone Top 10</a>&nbsp;as soon as we can get a full review unit at Stuff Towers.
