The team was beaten to the US$500,000 Grand Prize by wearable camera drone&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nixie-tiny-camera-drone-launches-your-wrist/news">Nixie</a>&nbsp;but won the Fan Favourite award, based on votes from attendees at the event.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot;Google is currently developing the modular phone Project Ara and we&rsquo;ve been in touch with them,&quot;&nbsp;says Hakeem Javaid.&nbsp;&quot; The Advanced Technologies and Projects group has confirmed that while it&rsquo;s up to 25% more expensive than having the device fully integrated,&nbsp;the price of going modular today is much cheaper than it was in the past.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; But the fact we are separating it means that when better technology comes along, you can just unplug the old GPS or heart-rate module and plug in a new one.&nbsp; So your watch will live on with you as you change your habits.&quot;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The Kickstarter campaign will feature the display module with the larger rectangular screen, built to accommodate the Intel Edison chip, whereas the smartband-style and circular display module will be made available later. Blocks say that a display module, clasp and four peripheral modules will fit nicely around a small-sized wrist, while those with bigger wrists will be able to slot in an extra fifth Block.</p> <p>As well as making the prototypes smaller, the team has a lot of work to do on the connections.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; The most important thing we are going to do in the next few months is refine the connector design between the Blocks,&quot;&nbsp;says Al Fakir.&nbsp;&quot; We have an adviser who is ex Sony, specifically on audio components. At the moment we are using 3.5mm jacks, he told us we&rsquo;re not going to be able to use jacks and we&rsquo;re going to have to design something completely new.</p> <p>&quot; The reason we made [the rectangular display] wider is to fit the Edison inside. The Edison doesn&#39;t fit in the smaller display and that&#39;s the one a lot of women have told us they like and would buy. The other is a bit masculine and large.&nbsp; They say that by the end of 2015, beginning of 2016 they&#39;ll have a smaller version. That&#39;s outside our timeframe but maybe they can fast-track something for us.&quot;&nbsp;</p> <p>If you can&rsquo;t wait until the Kickstarter campaign in April 2015, check out our <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/wearable-tech/top-ten">top ten wearables</a></strong> you can buy right now. says Mike Bell, VP of Intel&#39;s New Devices Group. &quot;Sitting in a runway show at fashion week was not something, as an engineer, I ever thought I would do.&nbsp; In fact, at the New York runway show&nbsp;people saw this on the model and before they knew it had technology inside, you could actually hear people screaming &#39;I&#39;ve got to get one of those.&quot;</p> <p>Bell describes the MICA as &quot;fashion first, technology second&quot;. He points out that when the battery runs out after a couple of days, unlike most smartwatches we&#39;ve seen so far, the MICA will still look like a piece of jewellery, not a blank screen.&nbsp;</p> <p>In fact, Intel took a completely hands-off approach to designing the smart bracelet. The first prototype looked &quot;about as good as you&#39;d expect a group of engineers to build&quot;.</p> <p>&quot; We took the concept to Opening Ceremony and said we have a connected bracelet so your customers can leave their phone at home and still maintain connectivity with the world around them. They looked at it and were very polite with us. But they said &ndash; Let&#39;s start from scratch.&quot;</p> <p>The bracelet isn&#39;t a certain thickness because Intel had to squeeze components such as the battery into the small, curved form factor - the thickness, radius and design language was all decided by the fashion brand.</p> <p>Bell says Intel is open to providing &quot;the guts&quot; of the MICA to other fashion partners with a &quot;serious interest&quot; who want to build something similar but it won&#39;t be open source to makers like the <a Krzanich hints at new Intel chips next year, a &quot;very simple one&quot; at the beginning of 2015 and a &quot;more advanced one in the second half of the year&quot; which will only activate the digital components and computing power when low power sensors are triggered.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; You can have an analogue part that&#39;s always listening and always sensing, that&#39;s very low power. Then if it sees something, whatever your sensor is monitoring, then this turns the digital side on. We have certain products coming out next year that really take this idea of putting the chip to sleep. And that impacts battery life quite a bit. A lot of battery is spent either sitting there waiting, in an idle state, or constantly pinging to see if you&#39;re doing anything. And we think we can go the other way around.&quot;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/smartwatch/blocks-modular-smartwatch-lets-you-build-wristwear-every-occasion/feature">Blocks modular smartwatch lets you build wristwear for every occasion&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>There&#39;s no word yet on how long such a wearable device could last but Krzanich says that smartwatches that don&#39;t last one working day are a problem and points to the Basis Peak which lasts a couple of days on one charge.&nbsp;</p> <p>Intel also has plans for the Basis fitness and sleep tracker now that it owns the company. It&#39;s good news for fashion companies looking to get into wearables as Intel is effectively killing the line in favour of opening up the tech to its partners.&nbsp;&nbsp;&quot; We don&#39;t think of the company and the brand as a product we need to build on,&quot; he says. &quot; We really think of it as a platform. So if Fossil wants to build a watch that has sleep tracking, step counting and heart monitoring we will just simply say &ndash; here it is. Before it had no idea how to move its legs; so it had to experiment, and the camera told it how well it was moving around in the world.&rdquo;</p> <p>That means that if the robot&rsquo;s damaged &ndash; or if Bunting decides to change the design &ndash; it can compensate, without his having to reprogram it.</p> <p>&ldquo;I&#39;ve also done terrain adaptation,&rdquo; he adds. &ldquo; So by using the camera, it can build up a map of the environment, and then use that map to step on top of obstacles.&rdquo;</p> <p>While the prospect of swarms of hexapod robots that can&rsquo;t be stopped by damaging them gives us the shivers, fortunately Bunting&rsquo;s ambitions don&rsquo;t stretch to creating his own robot army. For the time being, he&rsquo;s just planning to replace the Arduino breakout board with something less bulky.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/future-food-3d-printed/feature" target="_blank">How 3D printing will change the face of food</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nUpnbVb2-Rk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="This 3D printed robot spider has learnt how to walk" alt="This 3D printed robot spider has learnt how to walk" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/3d-printed-robot-spider-02.jpg?1412929644" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/edison/3d-printed-robot-spider-has-learnt-how-walk/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/edison/3d-printed-robot-spider-has-learnt-how-walk/news#comments 3D Printing Edison Intel Robots Thu, 09 Oct 2014 16:51:05 +0000 Elissa Loi 1449833 at http://www.stuff.tv Intel's new Core M processor could make the next MacBook Air a monster http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ifa-2014/intels-new-core-m-processor-could-make-next-macbook-air-monster/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s thin, fanless, powerful and the most energy efficient Core CPU in Intel’s history – and it’s coming very soon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Intel Core M" alt="Intel Core M" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/intel-core-m-logo.jpg?1410141706" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Intel has just unveiled its latest processor at IFA 2014, and it&rsquo;s set to boost small laptops, large tablets and 2-in-1 devices to new levels. Not if Intel has a say in it. At Computex 2014,&nbsp;Intel was out in full force, revealing its computing domination plans by enhancing user experience in these three ways.</p> <p>And they&#39;re not exactly new technology. It&#39;s how Intel envisions the applications behind these existing solutions that will change the way you use your smartphones, tablets and laptops.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/elissa-loi" title="View user profile.">Elissa Loi</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Look ma, no wires </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Wires are the bane of every tech lover&rsquo;s life. Intel&rsquo;s Kirk Skaugen of the PC Client Group showed off plans for wireless everything, from displays to the transfer of data. Intel&#39;s WiDi is the wireless display is what Miracast is to most mobile devices. But the added advantage for Intel is the dominance it has over laptops, and in the future, Intel-powered smartphones.</p> <p>Add a dose of ScreenBeam technology to instantly cast your small screened viewing experience onto the biggest display, and the transition between mobile and desktop is even more seamless than ever.</p> <p class="p1">But what&rsquo;s most interesting is the possibility of turning ordinary furniture into wireless charging stations with the help of charge pads that users can mount under the table to wirelessly juice (through up to two inches of wood) gadgets with the corresponding technology. We even saw a wireless charging bowl that you can chuck your smartphone into.
