They will almost literally disappear and never need charging, invisible on your person, but increasingly loud in informing you about your weight, fitness and mood.</p> <p>The nagging will never end, and gamification will finally be replaced by compulsion, mania, guilt, and, ultimately, weeping, face-down in a catering box of Monster Munch, stressed out about the data coming in by the second regarding how you&rsquo;re now 7.93 kg overweight! (Munch!) 7.95 kg! (Nom!) 7.97 kg! And how you haven&rsquo;t gone on a run for TWO WHOLE DAYS.</p> <p>Technology, once considered cunning magician by turning exercise into entertainment, has become oppressor, making you feel rubbish and never, ever shutting up. And this opinion has absolutely&nbsp;<em>nothing</em>&nbsp;to do with the fact that I sat on my lardy backside throughout almost all of December, and am feeling quite sheepish about the lonely elliptical trainer in the office with its thin layer of dust, and know full-well that all of this tracking kit is probably precisely what I need.</p> <p>Still, if everything goes horribly wrong when trying to rectify matters (aching back, pulled muscles, crushed spirit - that kind of thing), there&rsquo;s always the brilliant&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2015/ces-2015-armchair-gym-your-living-room/news">armchair gym</a>, in which you can sort-of exercise while reclining and immersed in a defiant chocolate binge/box-set marathon. Surely, this isn&rsquo;t a smart sock?</p> <p dir="ltr">Apparently, yes. Laughter started ringing in our heads, thinking this is really taking the cake, even for wearable tech. That inner laughter was quelled when we opened our minds, went forth and asked about the Sensoria Fitness Socks.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/tein-hee-seow" title="View user profile.">Tein Hee Seow</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">And it was good. At first glance, we noticed that the socks looked like a pair of normal footwear, with an anklet magnetically attached to one half of the pair. Beneath both socks, we were shown three sensors - two measuring the impact on the ball of your feet, and one right underneath the heel. The socks are designed like an electronic board, except instead of wires, they&rsquo;re fabricated with conductive fibers to transfer the signals from the sensors to the anklet.</p> <p dir="ltr">While we did not actually wear these socks (and probably shouldn&rsquo;t, considering how many pairs of feet would have touched it had Sensoria allowed it), we felt up the sensors. Actually, we&rsquo;ll take that back, because it was as if there&rsquo;s nothing that&rsquo;ll give away the fact that the sensors exist.</p> <p dir="ltr">The pressure sensitive sensors measure the impact at the point your feet lands; data is fed in real-time from the sensors, through the anklet and to the app via Bluetooth. This is where the magic begins. Should it focus mainly on the balls of your feet, the socks will send an audio feedback whenever you&rsquo;re putting too much pressure on the said parts. The usual tracking parameters, such as calories burnt and pace, are also included within the app.</p> <p dir="ltr">Sensoria estimates that the anklet&rsquo;s battery can last up to seven days. You probably won&rsquo;t run seven hours in a day, so it&rsquo;s good that the anklet is detachable and can be secured to another pair of socks via magnets. But Razer is already back at it with the Nabu X, a simpler and cheaper fitness tracker that has the same intriguing social elements built in.</p> <p class="p1">Unlike the pricier model, the Nabu X lacks an OLED display - instead, it uses vibrations and three small lights to alert you to notifications from a paired iPhone or Android smartphone. And it does so at half the price, as the Nabu X sells for &euro;49.99 (RM211). It&rsquo;ll launch on Razer&rsquo;s website on 13 January (and members of the Insider forum, at least U.S. ones, can get it for just $19.99 (RM71) at first) before becoming widely available later this spring.</p> <p class="p1">[Source: <a href="http://www.razerzone.com/nabu-x">Razer</a>]</p> <p class="p1"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/razer/ces-2014/part-smartwatch-part-fitness-band-razer-enters-wearables-race-nabu/news">Part smartwatch, part fitness band: Razer enters the wearables race with the Nabu</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Marvel’s Ant-Man trailer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">Paul Rudd starring in a Marvel superhero movie sounds like a rollicking good time, but there&rsquo;s something missing from this first look at the upcoming <em>Ant-Man</em>. It&#39;s the difference between your blood&#39;s pressure as your heart beats and refills, and it, along with measures of heart rate, apparently provide a pretty good measure of how you&#39;re feeling. Zensorium&#39;s Being smartwatch captures your PP and HR and mixes in some good old sleep tracking and activity monitoring via a built-in accelerometer to tell you not just how far you walked, but how you felt while you were doing it.</p> <p>The watch represents your mood over time via a circle of coloured dots around the face. Red says you&#39;re distressed, yellow excited, blue normal and green calm. It also archives this data (along with your activity and sleep) to a paired Android or iOS device so you can see how much happier you were when you went to see Michael Buble than when you caught that Radiohead gig.</p> <p>Unfortunately, the aluminium-clad watch&#39;s somewhat drab looks and low-res screen might make you feel a little bit sad, but at least the functionality is novel.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/wearable-tech/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 Best Wearable Devices in the World right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Prepare to add a new type of measurement to your wearable tech lexicon: Pulse Pressure (PP)" alt="Zensorium Being" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/zensorium-being-2.jpg?1420433096" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Pulse Pressure is the difference between your blood&#039;s pressure as your heart beats and refills, and it, along with measures of heart rate, apparently provide a pretty good measure of how you&#039;re feeling" alt="Zensorium Being" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/zensorium-being.jpg?1420433096" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2015/ces-2015-fat-sad-and-eating-too-much-these-next-gen-fitness-trackers-will-tell-you-so/news#comments CES 2015 Health and fitness Wearable tech Mon, 05 Jan 2015 03:00:45 +0000 Elissa Loi 1456661 at http://www.stuff.tv CES 2015: This armchair is a gym in your living room http://www.stuff.tv/my/ces-2015/ces-2015-armchair-gym-your-living-room/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Exercise will only take you sofa – now you can tone up without standing up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CES 2015: This armchair is a gym in your living room" alt="CES 2015: This armchair is a gym in your living room" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/tao-chair-06.jpg?1420431744" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>This armchair may look like it belongs in Blofeld&#39;s boudoir (or the bridge of the Enterprise-D), but it&#39;s actually an exercise machine for your living room.</p> <p>Tao Wellness reckons we&#39;re all sitting about too much, playing video games and lounging through marathon Netflix sessions.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The <a href="http://taochair.com/" target="_blank">Tao Chair</a> aims to change all that &ndash; pushing and pulling on the chair&#39;s rigid arms certainly puts a strain on your muscles, and it takes a fair bit of effort to get the calorie counter ticking away. There&rsquo;s no backlight, which can be annoying at times, but you can at least switch between white on black or black on white depending on the gloom.</p> <p>Using e-ink makes sense as it only uses power to refresh the screen rather than needing juice all the time. As a result it can survive up to three days between charges &ndash; although we&rsquo;ve needed to top up sooner on a few occasions &ndash; which is a huge improvement over most the competition. Charging is via micro-usb, again nice and convenient compared to the likes of the Garmin Vivosmart, which needs a dedicated charging cradle.</p> <p>Controls are mercifully simple. You navigate through the various app home screens using the physical navigation button on the side and just tap the screen to bring up more detail. Well, maybe &ldquo;beast&rdquo; isn&rsquo;t the right word.</p> <p>To be fair, this device from Japanese telecom company KDDI and manufacturer LG won&rsquo;t compete with typical flagships: it has a 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1.5GB RAM behind that 4.7in display, albeit with a respectable 2,370mAh battery. But it brings things like LTE and NFC to the Firefox fold, which were enabled by the latest OS update.</p> <p>More interestingly, it&rsquo;s a striking device - similar in general shape to other LG handsets like the G3 and Nexus 5, but shrunk down and quite obviously made a translucent gold colour. Just check out the Firefox logo on the home button, along with the glimpses at what&rsquo;s inside. The device is pricier than most Firefox options at 50,000 yen (about RM1455), and while the Fx0 may never find its way to other international carriers, its existence a good sign for the future expansion of the OS beyond the budget ranks.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/23/7440079/fx0-firefox-os-smartphone-specs-release-date-photos">The Verge</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Star Trek 3 hits cinemas in 2016 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A third entry in the&nbsp;<em>Star Trek</em>&nbsp;film reboot franchise seemed inevitable, but after J.J. Not all of those were exactly superb films, but he has experience with big, brash flicks, and that ought to pair well with Abrams&rsquo; modern vision for the sci-fi series.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://variety.com/2014/film/news/star-trek-3-sets-july-8-2016-release-date-1201386320/">Variety</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/first-star-wars-force-awakens-trailer-will-premiere-friday/news">First Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer goes live</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="720" title="Star Trek: Into Darkness" alt="Star Trek: Into Darkness" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/startrek-intodarkness.jpg?1419479884" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung creates app for children with autism </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s always great to see a tech company focus its efforts on helpful advancements that aren&rsquo;t tied to profits, and Samsung has just made a strong impression in that arena with&nbsp;<a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.lookatme">Look at Me</a>. The new Android app is designed to help children with autism communicate better with those around them.</p> <p>In a joint clinical trial between Seoul National University and Yonsei University, 60% of children tested showed improved eye contact and the ability to better recognize facial expressions. The app uses the camera of your device and features seven game-like missions to play to build skills.</p> <p>Look at Me is&nbsp;<a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.lookatme">a free download on Google Play</a>, and while Samsung lists only its own devices as being compatible, the app ought to work on most semi-recent Android phones and tablets (it ran fine on the Nexus 5 we tried). Now, the movie will again debut tomorrow in select United States cinemas - all independent locations and small chains, as the bigger theater companies still want nothing to do with it.</p> <p>According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony is also telling exhibitors that the film will be available via video-on-demand sources the very same day, although it&rsquo;s unclear if that&rsquo;ll be an international release or just North America for now. Still, for anyone that thought the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy&rsquo;s future looked rather bleak just a few days ago, it seems you&rsquo;ll have a chance to see it right about on schedule.</p> <p>[Sources:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.avclub.com/article/never-mind-sony-releasing-interview-christmas-afte-213309">The A.V.
