The magnesium-constructed body is weather-sealed to prevent moisture and dust getting inside, and the dials, buttons and chunky grip are as solid as you&rsquo;ll find on a consumer camera.</p> <p>That big bulge up on top houses one of the finest electronic viewfinders we&rsquo;ve ever clapped an eye to. Large, lag-free and boasting a resolution so high that you almost feel it&rsquo;s an optical viewfinder and not essentially a live video feed, the OLED EVF shows you exactly how the image you&rsquo;re about take will end up looking: bokeh, exposure adjustments, depth of field are all previewed as you change settings.</p> <p>The 3in rear screen is also worthy of a mention. We rarely used it for composing shots (the EVF is so good, you see), but its tilting mechanism means it comes in useful at those times when it&rsquo;s not convenient to hold the A7R up to your eye: when shooting with it high above your head or low to the ground, for instance.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Weather-proofing means you can use it in outside without too much worry" alt="Weather-proofing means you can use it in outside without too much worry" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-review-main.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The A7R&#039;s screen tilts both up and down" alt="The A7R&#039;s screen tilts both up and down" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-hand-screen.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A is for Accessories </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Alongside any E-mount lens (and, with Sony&rsquo;s adapter, full-size A-mount lenses too), you can equip the A7R with a wide range of accessories. The top class lens Sony sent us to use with it &ndash; a Carl Zeiss 35mm F2.8 prime &ndash; played a considerable role in that, but the glorious full-frame sensor and Sony&rsquo;s noise-reduction and image-processing technology were just as important.</p> <p>The huge physical size of the 36.4MP sensor helps immensely, as it&rsquo;s capable of capturing a lot of light even with fast shutter speeds. And there&rsquo;s excellent noise suppression, even at high ISO sensitivities, to help reduce unwanted graininess. That means shooting without flash in low light conditions is not only possible but delivers fantastic results: sharp, clean-looking pictures with little sign of noise.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14242997182/in/set-72157644794903505/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></p> <p>In brighter conditions, photos are even better. Because of the large sensor, there&rsquo;s a scale to these images that few DSLRs can touch, and it&rsquo;s also very easy to achieve a narrow depth of field, blurring the background or foreground of shots while keeping your subject in sharp focus.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-will-matt.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-alice.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="801" title="Sony A7R photo sample" alt="Sony A7R photo sample" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-sample-hallway.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Video star </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>These traits extend to the A7R&rsquo;s video footage, which looks utterly glorious &ndash; almost Hollywood-esque in its smoothness. Thankfully there&rsquo;s no need to go fully manual, and Sony&rsquo;s automatic modes are, as ever, scarily clever at determining what kind of thing you&rsquo;re shooting and what the settings need to be.</p> <p>The autofocus here is devilishly quick and accurate. Sony has even given it the ability to recognise the pupils in subject&rsquo;s eyes and focus on them, which keep faces sharp when shooting with a short depth of field.</p> <p>One possible criticism: there&rsquo;s no optical image stabilisation inside the body &ndash; many of Sony&rsquo;s lenses do however come with it equipped. We didn&rsquo;t find it an issue with the fast F2.8 lens, but it could conceivably hamper performance with slower lenses.</p> <p>The camera also comes with Wi-Fi and NFC, which allow you to connect to a smartphone or tablet. Personally, we find this a little pointless &ndash; transferring large images via Wi-Fi to a phone is far slower and fiddlier than it needs to be to become &ldquo;a thing&rdquo;, and transferring them to PC is much easier by cable or memory card. But some might get some use out of Sony&rsquo;s PlayMemories app, which allows remote viewing and remote control of the shutter.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/stuffs-guide-photography-how-and-why-you-should-buy-prime-lens/feature" target="_blank">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography: why you need a prime lens, and how to buy one</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" alt="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-hand-rear.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" alt="Controls are pleasinginly plentiful – and chunky" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-a7r-review-top.jpg?1401981784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony A7R verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We love this camera and were less than keen on giving it back to Sony after our two-week review period. However, on the W850 it&#39;s difficult to see why you&#39;d want the small, swivelly, screen-side camera. It only records VGA, and only as a window in the main camera&rsquo;s footage, so you can&rsquo;t switch between cameras (which would be handy for shooting an interview, or a wide and close angle on a subject). So in our brief experience we got two kinds of results from the two-camera camcorder: either a confusingly small picture of something far away or a deeply unflattering, chin-filled close-up of the shooter&#39;s face. If you can think of any film that would be improved by having your peering, distracted mug superimposed on a quarter of the screen, this is the feature for you.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">The tiny camera on the side may be about as useful as a waterproof teabag, but the W850&rsquo;s main eye is a feat of precision engineering. While most camcorders have two lens groups (a zoom group and a focus group), the W850 has four. The two extra zoom groups allow for a 50x optical zoom in a body the size and weight of a small hot dog (bun included). It can shoot 1080p slow motion (half-speed), and it can switch to slo-mo without breaking recording. While it&rsquo;s light it feels fairly sturdy and at first squint the footage looked impressive, especially zoomed right in.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">While pawing the W850 we were also shown an interesting accessory, the VW-CTR1 Pan Tilt Cradle. Mount your Panasonic camcorder on this robotic tripod (the W850 or its more affordable sibling, the V550) and you can shoot from anywhere, using your phone or PC. If you&rsquo;re a private investigator, a spy or a keen birdwatcher, this could be worth a (surreptitious) look.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_2231.JPG?1389069126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It tilts, it pans, it connects to the cloud." alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_2221.JPG?1389069126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/W850_K_slant_LCD.jpg?1389069126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/panasonic/hands-review-panasonic-w850-camcorder/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/my/panasonic/hands-review-panasonic-w850-camcorder/news#comments Camcorders CES 2014 Panasonic Mon, 06 Jan 2014 16:49:54 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1430798 at http://www.stuff.tv Sony reveals HDR-MV1 camcorder designed for music videos http://www.stuff.tv/my/hdr-mv1/sony-reveals-hdr-mv1-camcorder-designed-music-videos/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> I want my MTV: Sony gives the humble camcorder a new lease of life with this dual mic’d video camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony HDR-MV1" alt="Sony HDR-MV1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/HDR-MV1-angle.jpg?1378522654" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>If you thought the camcorder was deader than Monty Python’s parrot, think again – Sony’s designed a new movie maker specifically for shooting music videos.</p> <p>The HDR-MV1 looks like a cross between a compact camera and high-end audio recorder – which is pretty much what it is. Priced at almost US$6,000 (RM19,971) and featuring a battery life of just two hours, this 3840 x 2560 slate is plenty powerful – but don’t expect to see many on your morning commute.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Panasonic L65WT600" alt="Panasonic L65WT600" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Panasonic-TX-L65WT600E-angle-4K-800x600.jpg?1386624512" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG throws a 77in curve ball </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like squabbling sibling rivals, Korean companies LG and Samsung are constantly trying to one-up each other by making the biggest telly. For the uninitiated, they were small devices able to receive a short text message – or sometimes just a number. There was a time when almost everybody you’d meet had an iPod (or a non-Apple alternative for those who resented the iPod’s old approach to syncing and DRM), but now it’s rare to see anyone who isn’t a child or tween with one – everyone else uses their smartphones. It’s just a question of convenience.</p> <p>Yes, it’s those smartphones again. Little wonder Apple now only offers one version of the once-ubiquitous iPod Classic, and hasn’t updated it since 2007.</p> <p>There will always be a few people who favour dedicated MP3 players over their phones – the sound quality argument is a valid one, because lossless audio takes up a lot of space and dedicated MP3 players don’t need to use this up on apps; being designed primarily for music, they also may have better built-in DACs than phones. So perhaps it’s fair to say that the MP3 player has become a niche item rather than a totally dead one.</p> <p><strong>Cause of death: smartphones (again)</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iPod Classic" alt="iPod Classic" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipod-classic.jpg?1376885331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Netbooks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Cheap, compact, lightweight and just powerful enough to perform the basic tasks that make up 95 percent of the average person’s computer usage – email, web browsing, YouTube-watching etc. – the netbook was hailed as a revolution in mobile computing.</p> <p>Then along came tablets and the MacBook Air. The former can handle all of the above tasks and are generally smaller and more powerful than netbooks, while the latter offers the same sort of portability with far better design, build quality and performance (let’s face it: most netbooks had had a run-in with the ugly stick). One by one the netbook manufacturers gave up on this end of the market, with the final two holdouts Asus and Acer finally ceasing production in January 2013.</p> <p><strong>Cause of death: tablets</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Netbook" alt="Netbook" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/hp-mini-netbook.jpg?1376885331" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Flip video camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Flip range of pocket-sized video cameras enjoyed a dizzying level of success in the mid-to-late noughties, culminating in the company’s megabucks (US$590 million to be precise) acquisition by Silicon Valley royalty Cisco Systems in 2009.
