It feels positively chunky next to some Ultrabooks, such as <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/acer/acer-aspire-s7/review" target="_blank">Acer&rsquo;s Aspire S7</a>, which is a full six millimetres thinner, but the quest for ultra-slimness almost always comes at the cost of power, and that&#39;s not Apple&#39;s aim here. The only thing we&rsquo;re tiring of slightly is the brushed-aluminium finish - we&rsquo;d love to see a splash of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-5c/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5C-esque</a> colour applied. It&rsquo;s an unchanged 2,560 &times; 1,600 resolution and 13.3-inch size, so you&rsquo;re looking at something with a greater definition than 1080p Full HD. What&rsquo;s interesting here is how <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/os-x-mavericks-109/review" target="_blank">OS X</a> works with the screen: rather than treating it as a huge monitor and making everything really tiny, it uses it like a standard 13.3-inch screen and puts the extra pixels to good use in smoothing out fonts and anti-aliasing menus and curves.</p> <p>Why does this matter? Because our experiences with Windows on ultra-HD displays have been rather upsetting, with the operating system not quite understanding why there are so many pixels ganging up on it, and becoming almost-unusable in the process. Chrome, for instance, works brilliantly on the MacBook, whereas on the PC it&rsquo;s a hideously jagged and aliased affair. Apple&rsquo;s approach is far better, but admittedly Microsoft is taking steps towards solving its problems with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/microsoft/windows-81/review" target="_blank">Windows 8.1</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" alt="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2.jpg?1386191948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" alt="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF9710.JPG?1386191948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: Haswell for the win </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-air-13in-2013/review" target="_blank">MacBook Air</a>, Apple has made the biggest changes under the hood of the MacBook Pro. <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/intel/how-intel-haswell-making-cpus-exciting/feature" target="_blank">Intel&rsquo;s latest Haswell chips</a> take centre stage, and while they don&rsquo;t offer a huge leap in performance their efficiency and multi-tasking skills make them perfectly suited to laptops. An Iris graphics chip pumps out the pixels, but despite the fancy name it&rsquo;s essentially the next chip up from the Intel HD 5000 graphics in the MacBook Air.</p> <p>The results are what you&rsquo;d reasonably expect: a slight boost up from the MacBook Air, and better than the current crop of Windows-based laptops doing the rounds. Cinebench, which tests GPU performance, gave us a score of 20 frames per second, while most current Intel HD 4000 laptops muster about 15.</p> <p>In real-world terms, both <em>Batman: Arkham City</em> ran and <em>Portal 2</em> run at playable framerates in the MacBook Pro&rsquo;s native resolution, although we did have to turn off fancy effects such as anti-aliasing and ambient occlusion. Having tested a few ultra-HD computers, we&rsquo;ve realised that you don&rsquo;t really need largely superfluous effects to make games look good when they&rsquo;re running at such extreme resolutions, and that&#39;s also the case here (albeit to a slightly lesser extent than with 4K).</p> <p>Mac games are still a bit thin on the ground, though, and despite the success of gaming on iOS devices Apple&rsquo;s computers never seem to have shaken their &lsquo;this is for serious work things&rsquo; image. It&rsquo;s going to get more interesting when <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/steam-box/valve-reveals-steamos-first-three-announcements/news" target="_blank">Valve&rsquo;s Linux-based SteamOS</a> gets going, because you&rsquo;ll potentially be able to dual-boot a Mac into OS X for Mac things and SteamOS for gaming.</p> <p>As an aside from gaming, Photoshop also runs rather well. We imported a 12mb JPG and it handled it quite happily, although we did see the hypnotic rainbow wheel for a little too long when we applied a complex HDR filter. It&rsquo;s a perfectly capable little machine, but you&rsquo;ll probably want to invest in its bigger, more powerful brother if you&rsquo;re going to be indulging in hardcore gaming or art.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" alt="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/3_0.jpg?1386191948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" alt="MacBook Pro Retina 2013 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF9703.JPG?1386191948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hardware: a smattering of tech tweaks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The MacBook Pro nabs wireless 802.11ac networking from the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-air-13in-2013/review" target="_blank">MacBook Air</a>, which we&rsquo;ve found to be more reliable and faster than bog-standard 802.11n. The dual Thunderbolt ports are upgraded to Thunderbolt 2, which cleverly makes transfers faster and means that you can theoretically send a 4K file and watch it on an external display at the same time. There&rsquo;s still no ethernet port, but <a href="http://store.apple.com/my/product/MD463ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-gigabit-ethernet-adapter?fnode=51" target="_blank">you can pick up a Thunderbolt-to-gigabit-ethernet adapter (RM99!)</a>, and Thunderbolt ports double up as Displayport outputs, too.</p> <p>The hard drives have been upgraded to PCIe. Hi-res snaps and even icons in the MacBook’s homescreen dock look mesmerizing, too, with very vibrant colours that put previous MacBooks to shame and excellent viewing angles.&nbsp;</p> <p>Mountain Lion’s notifications, Launchpad and built-in Mac apps also look fantastic. But a Retina MacBook won’t magically improve the resolution of web images or movies, so not everything will look 4x more glorious than they did on a 1440x900 display– these things take time and the web could be playing catch-up for a while yet.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina Display" alt="Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina Display" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-9_2_0.jpg?1381527590" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina Display" alt="Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina Display" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-8_1_0.jpg?1381528374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-6_2_0_0.jpg?1381528374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-10_1_0_0.jpg?1381528374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> design and build  </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The optical drive is now missing – as it is with the <a href="/review/apple-macbook-air-13in-2012">MacBook Air</a> – and while this may prove a pain from time to time, the thin and sleek design will be a comfort to you next time you need to insert an installation disc.&nbsp;</p> <p>Otherwise, there’s no radical overhaul to MacBook styling – the sexy aluminium design is still present and correct, only now it’s slimmer (19mm thick) and lighter (1.6kg). Whereas other manufacturers go for light and skinny from the off, Apple has always won the build battle by making something desirable first and then concentrating on making it smaller and lighter. It’s a tactic that seems to be working again.</p> <p>The keyboard and trackpad are as responsive and easy to use as ever, a feat not to be sniffed at when so many Ultrabooks get these key input areas so wrong. Two Thunderbolt ports, two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI output, an SD card reader and Bluetooth 4.0 are all also on board. No Ethernet cable socket then, another occasional annoyance – particularly when travelling – but certain features were obviously sacrificed to the design gods.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina Display" alt="Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina Display" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-4_2_0.jpg?1381528374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-6_2_0.jpg?1381528374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macbook-pro-13in-retina-display-review-hands-on-10_1_0.jpg?1381528374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> processing power and gaming  </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It might not be as portable as a <a href="/review/apple-macbook-air-13in-2012">MacBook Air,</a> but with a 2.5GHz dual-core Core i5 running the show, the 13in Retina has been built to be the only laptop you’ll ever need. You won’t get the same performance as using the <a href="/review/apple-macbook-pro-2012">15in models’</a> quad-core Core i7 chip (with back-up from NVIDIA GeForce 650M graphics) but it’s still very impressive. The <a href="/review/apple-macbook-pro-2012">15in Retina Display MacBook Pro</a> does offer more processing power, but the 13in size and relatively light weight mean you can take this eye-popping laptop anywhere without thinking about it.&nbsp;</p> <p>And at RM4,599, although it is still steep, it’s not actually bad value for money – Ultrabooks like the <a href="/news/ifa/news-nugget/four-new-ultraportable-notebooks-from-asus">Asus Taichi</a>, <a href="/news/ces/ces/dell-xps-13-hands-on-review">Dell XPS 13</a> and <a href="/news/computers-and-consoles/news-nugget/new-video-the-hp-envy-14-spectre-is-one-glassy-ultrabook">HP Envy 14 Spectre</a> aren’t too shy of crossing the RM3000 threshold – and you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you’ve got a pretty futureproof resolution on your hands.&nbsp;</p> <p>That doesn’t mean the 13in Retina MacBook Pro is an essential buy right now, but it’s without doubt the way to go if you want a taste of the laptop future right now.</p> <p>Review by <a href="https://plus.google.com/100316166955509219073/posts">Sophie Charara</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What could be the best laptop ever just became truly portable.
