It keeps vice-like control of the hardware and the software development sides of its business, and has achieved runaway success with this approach. There has been no iOS-running Nokia, no Mac OS X-running laptop (aside from those build by keen hackers). Indeed, Steve Jobs killed the clone licensing of Macs as one of his first acts when he returned to the ailing company in 1997.</p> <p>To my mind, this approach won&#39;t work with watches. Apple could create the most beautiful piece of wearable tech in history (and let&#39;s face it, it probably will), along with the most intuitive smartwatch OS (yep, that too), but neither will guarantee its success. Because watches are jewellery.</p> <p>Apple has already experienced what I&#39;m grasping at with the iPhone backlash that haunts tech sites and forums across the web. It&#39;s more to do with the iPhone&#39;s ubiquity than it is quality or value - but in wearables, the pattern will be concentrated, because the smartwatch you wear will be a more obvious expression of your individuality than the smartphone in your pocket.</p> <p>A few face designs, straps and colours won&#39;t cut it: Apple needs variety, it needs customisation - it needs partners.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Apple iWatch concept design" alt="Apple iWatch concept design" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iwatch_0_0_0_1.jpg?1395678307" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iWatch as the modern mechanical movement </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You could counter that I&#39;m barking up the wrong tree here - that observations of analogue watch trends are irrelevant in the face of a burgeoning and rapidly churning smartwatch market, one that will be closer to smartphones in its behaviour than it is jewellery. That doesn&#39;t ring true for me, and nor I think would it for far brighter people such as Genevieve Bell, Intel&#39;s anthropologist.</p> <p>At CES this year, Bell told me that most current wearables are &quot;terribly literal&quot; and &quot;not conveying symbolic meaning. But all the things we put on our body do symbolic work.&quot; Watches don&#39;t only say &#39;time is of utmost importance to me&#39;, and smartwatches won&#39;t simply mean &#39;I can&#39;t get enough notifications to my wrist.&#39; They tell of our affinity with &#39;70s design, our desire to be like James Bond, our love of the Cylons out of Battlestar Galactica. This is why Bell thinks bringing the fashion industry into wearables is the logical next step - and why Intel is partnering with the likes of Barneys, Opening Ceremony and The Council of Fashion Designers of America on wearable devices.</p> <p>So here&#39;s an idea. Turn the iWatch from the single design(s) of our imaginations into a platform, much like Android Wear, but with strict hardware guidelines similar to those Windows Phone 8 has (it&#39;s these that mean you never see a WinPhone with expandable memory). Specify the processor, RAM and storage it&#39;ll need, the screen size and resolution, the interface, the battery, the type and location of its charging mechanism. Perhaps even provide all the technology that&#39;s necessary to make it work, and then partner with brands that have a proven history in wristwear, be they Tag-Heuer, Rolex, Casio or whoever else will do the job right.</p> <p>The iWatch could become the &#39;movement&#39; within a vast array of watch case designs. (This is already a model that works for Swiss company ETA, which provides mechanical movements to Tag-Heuer, Breitling, Ball, Omega and more.)&nbsp;</p> <p>Better still, make the movement replaceable, so that a beautifully wrought stainless steel and sapphire crystal-clad IWC can be upgraded every couple of years as the silicon inside it ages. That way you get to have an amazing piece of technology while wearing a watch that&#39;s both an heirloom and a timeless object.</p> <p>Who knows, it might just work. There are hurdles - you&#39;d need to get the watch manufacturers to buy into the whole idea in the first place - but if anyone can do it, Apple can. Perhaps it&#39;s time to make some new friends.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple iWatch preview</a></strong></p> <p><em>Image credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/70205638@N00/5957049604/in/photolist-a5priN-a5NcW3-99URCj-igp7Ca-igoSRW-igov2H-igougK-axTBHd-egtum8-egtwpc-avdNXG-avdQoC-9hdsPK-iD7xPL-iD6XT8-iD5PJr-iD5NKc-9HCRem-kBkCye-8q8sns-egtxpT-egtxLK-egzfio-egzg3G-9M293y-egtvtV-egtvqD-egzhAf-egtxt8-egtwa4-egzgxC-egtwLV-avbaSP-avdPUW-avdPx7-egzfnm-dFTJ1R-9LZNBE-9LZNAb-9LYmM6-9M2a2L-9LhEgr-9M2azy-9LksiC-9LhE6r-egtxba-9i1P8r-bitUUF-bitUYz-96jwSG-axQYs2" target="_blank">Ian Freimuth</a></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Barneys New York" alt="Barneys New York" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/barneys-new-york.jpg?1395678307" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iWatch - a tough fight against Android Wear </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Against Google&#039;s smartwatch, Apple needs all the help it can get </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image-small"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item small image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image_small" width="450" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iwatch-render_0.jpg?1395658103" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/compete-android-wear-apple-needs-radically-different-iwatch/feature#comments Apple iWatch Wearable tech Wed, 19 Mar 2014 19:42:26 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1434135 at http://www.stuff.tv Design Tuesday: 11 of the best iWatch concepts http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/design-tuesday-10-interesting-imaginings-iwatch/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Imagination goes where Apple’s secrecy will not allow us </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Design Tuesday: 10 creative imaginings of the iWatch" alt="Design Tuesday: 10 creative imaginings of the iWatch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/venestudio.jpg?1394975228" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">iWatch</a> has been a long time coming. The Pebble&#39;s low-power ARM Cortex-M3 processor, made by STMicro, consumes 32microWatts per MHz of clockspeed, and its maximum clockspeed is believed to be 80MHz (according to the official spec sheet) &ndash; but since that can also clock down to almost nothing most of the time it doesn&#39;t tell us much and besides, the battery in the Pebble lasts about five days and also powers an e-ink screen and the Bluetooth transciever.</p> <p>Since we know that the Pebble lasts for about five days on a single charge (or 120 hours-ish), napkin maths tells us that it thus consumes, on average, somewhere in the region of 0.004W. Which doesn&#39;t sound like much, does it? Commercially available, cheap <a href="http://www.communica.co.za/Catalog/Details/P2514121334" target="_blank">solar cells</a> that are roughly the size of a wristwatch strap can produce 0.08W, which would be more than enough to power the Pebble entirely and keep the battery at full charge. Sure, that&#39;s under perfect sunny conditions rather than being buried under a shirt sleeve in an indoor office under artificial light, but at least it would extend the battery life, right?</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-experimenting-solar-charging-screen-iwatch/news-charging/news" target="_blank">Apple experimenting with solar charging screen for iWatch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/J7do9ZnKqPY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Smartwatch" alt="Pebble Smartwatch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-smartwatch_5.jpg?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Leaving Pebbles on the shore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The problem, however, is the Pebble is a really bad analogy when it comes to a prospective iWatch &ndash; unless Apple really has let its ambitions slide. When you look at something more likely to be a competitor to an iWatch, the figures stop making much sense.</p> <p>&ldquo;I don&#39;t think you could use the Pebble as a benchmark for power requirements,&rdquo; says South African technologist, Toby Kurien, &ldquo;Rather look to the Galaxy Gear for that. If I&#39;m not mistaken, that&#39;s around a 315mAh battery, probably running at 3.7V. That equates to around 1.2Wh. So you&#39;d need a panel capable of around 0.4W to be able to charge your watch in about three hours or so.&rdquo;</p> <p>A quick reminder &ndash; 0.4W is still five times more power than a watch strap sized cell running at maximum efficiency. According to Kurien it&#39;s likely that a top end panel would produce twice that amount of power under optimal conditions, but that would still take eight hours of direct sunlight to charge the iWatch.</p> <p>&ldquo; It is feasible if the idea is that your watch is constantly charging from sun and/or interior lighting and you&#39;re not expecting a full charge,&rdquo; says Kurien, &ldquo;though my feeling is that it&#39;s still unlikely given practical considerations, and how it affects cost and aesthetics.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Samsung Galaxy Gear" alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-gear.JPG?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> But… But… APPLE! </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Just one more thing. We all know how Apple likes to pull something unexpected out of the bag that was previously considered impossible within such a time frame and cost envelope. Like a multi-touch mobile screen, or an implausibly sophisticated thumbprint reader. Surely there&#39;s some magic it can do with sun-powered tech?</p> <p>There&#39;s one place that would surely know the answer to this &ndash; outside of Apple&#39;s secretive R&amp;D section, of course &ndash; would be the <a href="http://www.cser.org.uk/" target="_blank">Centre for Solar Energy Research</a> at Glyndŵr University in Wales. If there&#39;s a transparent PV panel that can generate more power per square millimetre than existing technology just around the corner, they might &ndash; just might &ndash; have got wind of it.</p> <p>So naturally we asked, and Senior Research Lecturer Dr Vincent Barrioz was happy to look at our numbers. &ldquo;Never say never, but the figures you are quoting [for battery size] appear to be unlikely for fully charging such batteries,&rdquo; Barrioz said, &ldquo; It may be able to top-charge the battery, but considering that the PV panel would be inserted within the size of the smartwatch and transparent (ie. converting only photons from the UV and/or infrared range), I am not aware of that technology being currently available or close to market.</p> <p>&ldquo; If it is, I would certainly be interested to know more about it.&rdquo;</p> <p>[Apple iWatch concept designs by <a href="http://www.martinhajek.com" target="_blank">Martin Hajek</a> and <a the efforts&quot; have revealed that Apple has been working on an iWatch screen with a solar charging layer &ndash; though the technology is reportedly some way off being a practical reality. &nbsp;</p> <p>Apple has already filed patents for a solar charging screen, and Alcatel has previously shown off its own solar charging screen technology.</p> <p>Apple has also experimented with wireless inductive charging similar to that found in some Nokia Lumia smartphones. &nbsp;</p> <p>A 2009 patent reveals that Apple has also dabbled in motion charging, which would use the kinetic
