The iPad Air, meanwhile, will set you back a fair whack more: RM1599 for the equivalent model.</p> <p>The iPad 4 is only available in the 16GB variety, but spec up the Mini Retina and Air and the percentage difference between them decreases. So while&nbsp;a 128GB cellular Mini is yours for RM2679, the same spec Air costs RM2999.</p> <p>Bearing in mind depreciation, the regular refreshment of the iPad range and the vulnerability of mobile hardware, it might be wise to think twice before you splash out more than RM2500 on a tablet. For our money, the 32GB and 64GB Wi-Fi variants offer comfortable levels of storage without excessive financial investment, but if you can manage with just 16GB, the iPad 4 is undoubtedly the best value iPad now available.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad 4</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display" alt="Which iPad? Now, the only apparent difference between the small and big iPads is the surface area. The Mini Retina has a 7.9in display while the Air&#39;s screen is 9.7in across the diagonal. Both are just 7.5mm thick.</p> <p>The poor old iPad 4 sticks with its relatively retro-looking and hefty build in comparison - it&#39;s 652g compared to the Air&#39;s svelte 469g. This is a tablet you might leave at home but it&#39;s still sturdy and perfectly finished.&nbsp;</p> <p>The wide black frame of the iPad 4 has been reduced substantially on the longer sides of the Air. Because it&#39;s much thinner than big iPads of yore, the Air no longer has to do the tapered edge trick, instead sporting a more squared-off edge, identical to the Mini Retina.</p> <p>Both the Air and Mini Retina are available in either &#39;Space Grey&#39; (with a black frame) or &#39;Silver&#39; (with a white frame), shrouded in a single-part aluminium case. The iPad 4 has to make do with the less exciting &#39;black&#39; or &#39;white&#39;, which is apt considering its similarly prosaic design.</p> <p>There&#39;s really nothing between the two newer tablets on this score. The iPad Mini is slightly more of a take-anywhere tablet due to its dinky size, but ultimately we&#39;ll call this one a tie.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> draw - iPad Mini with Retina and iPad Air&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-ipad-mini-retina-display/feature" target="_blank">The 10 best accessories for the Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-ipad-air/feature" target="_blank">The 11 best accessories for the Apple iPad Air</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display" alt="Which iPad? Between the iPad 4 and iPad Air, it&#39;s the same resolution and 9.7in size but there are small differences in colour and contrast. The Air&#39;s colours are very vivid - check out iOS 7 icons - and it&#39;s a slightly brighter, crisper screen.</p> <p>The Mini doesn&#39;t lag behind on pixel specs, sharing its 2048x1536 resolution with&nbsp;the two full-sized iPads. That&#39;s dense enough to make pixel edges invisible to most eyes on the iPad Air and iPad 4, but the Mini Retina beats that (for what it&#39;s worth) with an even greater pixel density due to its smaller screen size.</p> <p>The Mini&#39;s screen is excellent, but the Air has more accurate colour reproduction, with the Mini struggling with some hues, reds in particular. Even though that&#39;s not something you&#39;re likely to notice unless you have a trained eye, together with the increased display area it means the Air should be the first choice for anyone heavily into graphics or video work. Indoors it&#39;s quite practical and comfortable on any of the three to reduce the brightness slider by as much as 50%, which will help stretch out the already impressive battery life.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad Air</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Everything you need to know about iPhone 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> BATTERY LIFE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad 4 has to find room for a pretty fat battery in order to drive its screen for ten hours, but somehow the Air has just as much stamina despite its slimmer chassis.&nbsp; Not only that, but it charges in less time too. In real terms that means it doesn&#39;t need a full night plugged into the mains to get back to 100%.</p> <p>In our real-life tests, the Air is averaging between one and two days before it needs rejuicing. The Mini Retina makes the same 10-hour battery life claims, which are realistic, but in our experience it doesn&#39;t quite match the two bigger models for real-world stamina.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad Air</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Which iPad? It&rsquo;s the battle of the big tablets: in one corner, Apple&rsquo;s flagship slate, the iPad Air; in the other, Samsung&rsquo;s maxi-sized, high-powered Galaxy NotePRO 12.2.</p> <p>Which is the king of the king-sized tabs? Now that we&rsquo;ve had the chance to review both models, we&rsquo;re in a position to tell you. Seconds out: it&rsquo;s go time.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design: real metal vs fake leather </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before we get on to the tablets&rsquo; respective stylings, a quick word about their size. As its name suggests, the 9.7in iPad Air is lightweight: 469g (478g for the cellular version) and 7.5mm thick. The Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2in? Not so much. This 12.2in behemoth tips the scales at 750g &ndash; unlike the iPad, it&rsquo;s too hefty to comfortably hold one-handed. It&rsquo;s more a tray-blet than than a tablet, with the surface area of two iPad Minis combined! Samsung has managed to squeeze its thickness down to just 8mm, though. </p><p>Design-wise, Samsung has stuck with textured, leather-effect hard plastic for the NotePRO 12.2&rsquo;s backside, plus metal-look sides. We quite like the way the tablet feels in the hand (there&rsquo;s no flex in it, despite its size) and despite the faux-leather expanse on its reverse it manages to not look totally naff &ndash; but nobody with any sense of taste could say it matches the preeminent elegance of the iPad Air&rsquo;s metal-and-glass build, not to mention its solidity and overall feeling of quality. Samsung has a hell of a way to go to catch up with Apple in terms of creating devices that are truly beautiful.</p> <p>The NotePRO 12.2 is designed to be used in landscape the majority of the time &ndash; Samsung&rsquo;s decision to locate the physical home button (which is flanked by capacitive back and menu controls) on one of the long edges makes it tricky to hit when using the tablet in portrait orientation. The iPad Air&rsquo;s smaller size and lower weight means it can be used comfortably in either orientation.</p> <p>Obviously the NotePRO&rsquo;s size was always going to make it heavier and more unwieldy than the iPad Air, but even if they were equal in those respects, Apple&rsquo;s superior styling and eye for design would get the nod.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Apple iPad Air</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-air-back.jpg?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" alt="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/notepro%20122%20back.JPG?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen legends </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad Air boasts a 9.7in screen with a 2048 x 1536 resolution, which gives it a pixel density of 264ppi. That&rsquo;s plenty of power on tap: more than enough to run four apps simultaneously via Multi Window and handle the latest games (although the tablet&rsquo;s sheer size makes it unsuited for gaming).</p> <p>The iPad Air&rsquo;s specs might not beat the NotePRO&rsquo;s on paper (dual-core 1.4GHz A7 processor, under 1GB of RAM), but it&rsquo;s similarly slick when it comes to day-to-day use. In fact, going by Geekbench 3 the iPad Air is a fair bit quicker &ndash; although we don&rsquo;t advise you put too much stock in benchmarks. The iPad also feature a 64-bit processor (something that may be significant in the future, if not greatly so now). On raw specs, the NotePRO has it.</p> <p>In terms of battery life, the two tablets performed almost exactly the same in our HD rundown test: the NotePRO lasts a heck of a long time considering its huge screen.</p> <p>Connectivity-wise, the NotePRO packs dual-band Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 3G/4G. The Air offers much the same, minus USB 3.0 which it supplants with its Lightning port.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-Garageband.jpg?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" alt="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/notepro%20122%20multi%20window.JPG?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS and apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A hard one to compare, this, because they&rsquo;re so different. Apple has iTunes and the App Store, giving iPad users access to the best-stocked digital shops around (Google Play isn&rsquo;t at all bad, but iTunes has it beat) and a heap of apps tuned specifically for Retina display screens; Android is rather poorly served when it comes to apps suitable for large tablets. The NotePRO has the advantage of its S Pen stylus, which allows you to jot down notes, make sketches and circle details to remember for later. Both are flagship slates for their parent companies, and both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/my/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Metal vs pleather </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both tablets borrow design cues from elsewhere in their respective ranges; in the case of the iPad Air, that means iPad Mini-style lines, complete with slimmed-down screen bezel. The Note, meanwhile, draws on the Galaxy Note 3&#39;s pleather-and-plastic design, complete with fake stitching on the back.</p> <p>Of the two, the iPad Air&#39;s the standout in terms of design; it&#39;s a mere 7.5mm thin, with no give in it. And it&#39;s light, too &ndash; 469g or 478g, depending on whether you opt for the Wi-Fi only or cellular version. Beware, though: all that Space Grey aluminium will scratch easily.</p> <p>The Note&#39;s well put-together &ndash; there&#39;s little to no flex in it, and the manufacturing is seamless. However, its symphony of plastic and faux-leather just looks plain tacky on a device this size &ndash; and the pleather doesn&#39;t have the grippy, soft-touch feel of the Galaxy Note 3&#39;s similar back to recommend it.</p> <p>That metal-effect plastic edging is pretty unimpressive next to the iPad&#39;s metal-and glass build, too &ndash; and it doesn&#39;t yield a weight saving, with the Note coming in at around 540g depending on which version you pick up. That said, the Note feels solid in the hand, and has a pleasing heft to it. But in terms of looks, there&#39;s no contest &ndash; the iPad Air walks away with it.</p> <p><em>Winner</em>: <strong>iPad Air</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-build-camera_2.png?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-2014-review-extras.JPG?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review-build-1_0.JPG?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-iBooks_2.png?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note 10.1&#39;s screen is glorious &ndash; &quot;one of the best we&#39;ve ever seen on a 10in tablet,&quot; as Stuff&#39;s own Sophie Charara puts it. And that power is backed up by the benchmarks, too, with the Note managing a respectable score of 2871 on Geekbench 3 in our test.</p> <p>That&#39;s a step ahead of the iPad Air&#39;s Geekbench score of 2696 &ndash; and it&#39;s not surprising, since the iPad&#39;s proprietary dual-core 1.4GHz A7 processor and 1GB RAM don&#39;t quite measure up to the Note&#39;s internals. That said, Apple&#39;s 64-bit processor is handily future-proofed (<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/whats-all-fuss-about-64-bit-smartphones-iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-anyway/feature" target="_blank">find out what the fuss is all about here</a>), and app developers are slowly starting to optimise their wares for the extra headroom.</p> <p>Of course, it&#39;s what you do with those specs that count, and the iPad Air is delightfully smooth. With every single app we&#39;d opened running in the background, we still got &quot;zero stutter when dropping five-minute long HD clips into the iMovie timeline, resizing and rearranging, playing back the preview and adding music.&quot;</p> <p>The Note, meanwhile, &quot;chews through demanding games like a croc through soft fudge,&quot; but could still do with some optimisation in terms of software; there&#39;s a noticeable pause between tapping an app and it opening, and &quot;as we set a tonne of Android apps downloading to the tab at once, the shiny widgets on the main homescreen flickered and entered a reload loop meltdown just short of a full crash.&quot;</p> <p>Still, the grunt&#39;s there, and on raw specs, we have to give the trophy to Samsung for this round.</p> <p><em>Winner</em>: <strong>Samsung</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/25-fantastic-free-android-games/feature" target="_blank">25 fantastic free Android games</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-iMovie_2.png?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review-s-pen-options_0.JPG?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Connectivity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In terms of ports, there&#39;s surprising parity between the two tablets; the The Note packs in microUSB 2.0 and microSD up to 64GB, plus an IR blaster. The UI design is slick and stripped-back, and the controls are intuitive &ndash; although Apple&#39;s continuing refusal to add homescreen widgets and customisation options remains a point of contention.</p> <p>Apple&#39;s not-so-secret weapons are, of course, iTunes and the App Store &ndash; &quot;the biggest and best-curated digital shops available, despite fierce competition from Google Play.&quot; 10in Android tablets still lag behind in terms of essential apps, though the number is gradually increasing. There are no official Twitter or Facebook apps available for 10in &#39;droids, for instance, and while the BBC iPlayer has finally made its way onto larger Android tablets, the Note 10.1 doesn&#39;t yet support programme downloads.</p> <p>Which operating system you pick largely comes down to your own preferences and priorities. With the Note, you get Android&#39;s more open platform (complete with a proper file and folder structure), plus more options for customisation and homescreen widgets. The iPad Air gets you Apple&#39;s cleaner, simpler design and the vast riches of its App Store. So which comes out on top?</p> <p>The iPad Air offers gorgeous design, an impressive screen and a shedload of apps thanks to Apple&#39;s App Store. The Note 10.1 delivers plenty of grunt with its 3GB RAM, 1.9GHz processor and 299ppi screen &ndash; and its S Pen stylus is genuinely useful once you&#39;ve got the hang of it. But Samsung&#39;s slate is hamstrung by the limited availability of 10in Android tablet apps, and an overly fussy design.</p> <p>If and when the app situation improves, Samsung may gain the edge over Apple &ndash; but for the time being, the iPad Air rightly dominates the large tablet market. Thanks to the liberal fat-trimming, its front is almost entirely screen. There’s still room to rest your thumbs on what remains of the bezels (in case you mistrust Apple’s thumb rejection tech, which helps prevent hand-resting from becoming accidental input), but while the screen has the same 9.7in span it always did, the Air feels much smaller than previous iPads.</p> <p>It’s also the new champion of tablet hardware design. Cool aluminium, almost unbroken lines (curse you, 3.5mm jack) and perfectly drilled speaker grilles make for a familiar and elegant look. It’s the kind of object you’ll caress for no reason, and while we might glance lustily at the spun metal of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/asus/asus-transformer-pad-tf701t/review" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Pad</a>, or the sleek black plastic of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 7</a>, we’d ditch either in a heartbeat for an Air.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/gallery?viewid=104416" target="_blank">TAKE A LOOK AT OUR FULL iPAD AIR GALLERY HERE</a></p> <p>The Air comes in black and “Space Grey” or white and silver but, contrary to rumours, there’s no gold version. Despite the skinny 7.5mm form, there’s no flex to it, but its back and sides will scratch up if you look at them angrily just as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini</a>'s or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>'&nbsp;do, so you’ll want to look after it.</p> <p>Over the course of a movie or gaming stretch, you'll appreciate how light the iPad is compared to&nbsp;iPads 3&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-ipad-4/review" target="_blank">4</a>, too. In fact, at 469g (Wi-Fi model; 478g for the 4G version) it’s a mighty 28% less hefty.&nbsp;</p> <p>Design-wise the only cause for disappointment is that the iPad Air’s home button doesn’t play host to the Touch ID fingerprint scanner debuted on the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>. The Air has the 64-bit brain necessary for the encryption, so to our minds it’s an odd omission. Handy, considering the same silicon appears in the iPad Air.</p> <p>All the iWork and iLife apps (see below) are now optimised for 64-bit, but it’s not just Garageband that will run best on the iPad Air. Showcase tricks that you can actually try out on day one include enhanced reflections, shadows and cutscene graphics in the absolutely gorgeous (if a bit of a trudge in terms of gameplay) Infinity Blade III, real-time key-matching in djay 2, 720p video decoding in vjay and real-time karaoke effects in Smule’s Sing.</p> <p>So, from what we’ve seen so far the iPad Air’s extra grunt gives already great apps (OK, maybe not Sing) even more features. The list isn’t yet long enough to justify immediately dropping money on the upgrade, but it’s early days – legions of devs are beavering away on 64-bit features right now, and the next few months are sure to see a deluge of boundary-pushing apps.</p> <p>Still not sure?&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/whats-all-fuss-about-64-bit-smartphones-iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-anyway/feature" target="_blank">Find out what all the fuss over 64-bit processors is about right here</a>.</p> <p>It’s ready for the future, then, but how’s day-to-day use right now? In a week of trying to fry the iPad Air we managed to make it crash only once, and that was when we were using a media transfer hack. It only got warm once, and that was after an intense Infinity Blade III session.</p> <p>We got zero stutter when dropping five-minute long HD clips into the iMovie timeline, resizing and rearranging, playing back the preview and adding music. All with every single app that’s been opened since we first turned the iPad on continuing to run in the background. Impressive stuff.&nbsp;</p> <p>With dual-band Wi-Fi and MIMO tech to speed up browsing, the iPad is also our favourite new internet surfboard, with snappy pageloads and downloads backed up by an incredible&nbsp;<a href="http://www.webkit.org/perf/sunspider/sunspider.html" target="_blank">Sunspider 1.0.2</a>&nbsp;score of 383.9ms. Oh, and that’s not to mention beastly boot-up and shutdown times of just twenty seconds.</p> <p>We can’t let the iPad Air go toe-to-toe with the best Android tabs on performance without throwing in a round of benchmarking.&nbsp;<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/geekbench-3/id683676887" target="_blank">Geekbench 3</a>&nbsp;fills in some of the spec gaps left by cloak-and-dagger Apple, detailing a dual-core ARM processor running at 1.4GHz (that’ll be the A7) coupled with a shade under 1GB of RAM.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Air scores a very high 2696 on Geekbench’s test, which tops the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>’ A7 effort of 2556 and trounces the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-ipad-4/review" target="_blank">iPad 4’s</a>&nbsp;1556, but on paper still can’t quite match the&nbsp;Tegra 4&nbsp;brain of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/asus/asus-transformer-pad-tf701t/review" target="_blank">Asus Transformer Pad</a>, which scores 2730. Editing HD video in the iMovie app works like a dream – it’s missing some audio ducking, title timings and clip timestamping but is otherwise laden with features and proves a brilliantly simple and quick way to make and view edits, and projects are synced between iPad, Mac and Apple TV in the ‘Theatre’ page so you can continue or show off your work on another device. iPhoto has also been tweaked with a fresh look, intuitive editing tools and seriously speedy applications, crops and effects.&nbsp;</p> <p>Garageband looks familiar, albeit a little more two-dimensional than before, but the new version has plenty of neat tricks such as recording up to 32 tracks on 64-bit iPads (16 elsewhere), dragging and dropping tracks from iTunes into the sampler and using audio from other iOS apps as new instrument tracks. On iOS it’s still very much an on-the-go music sketchbook to feed into the full version of Garageband or Logic Pro, but in-progress tracks can be uploaded to iCloud or shared with AirDrop.&nbsp;</p> <p>With everything now free with newly bought iPads (although the full Garageband instrument set costs £2.99 as an in-app purchase), Apple’s taking the creativity fight to Google and Microsoft. Why? For a start because it’s now free with new iPads - and free is a lot less than £6.99 x3, which is what the full suite used to cost. It’s currently a beta feature and can be a little slow (Safari works best, unsurprisingly), but it’s a start. Android has been left out in the cold in terms of cloud-based editing, but links to download documents and spreadsheets can be sent to anyone. Links are sent via Mail, Messages, Facebook, Twitter or AirDrop and with one-click saving to iCloud.</p> <p>It’s all built for 64-bit, redesigned to look fresh enough for&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ios-7/ios-7/review" target="_blank">iOS 7</a>, and there’s a smattering of new features, such as a context-aware sidebar in Pages, interactive charts in Numbers that update smoothly in real-time (just make cell changes to see them dance) and extra transitions for Keynote presentations.</p> <p>If it wasn’t for the lack of an official keyboard dock, this increased propensity for productivity could put Apple’s own&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/apple-macbook-air-13in-2013/review" target="_blank">MacBook Air</a>&nbsp;in jeopardy. Such a life is far from ideal, though, especially if you've opted for a Wi-Fi-only model, so we do wish the price hikes between storage options weren’t so massive.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Malaysian Prices and availability </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Calling this the iPad Air initially seems a gimmick: a marketing ploy designed to invoke the excitement and thrill of an all-new product, when in fact so much is carried over from previous iPads.&nbsp; But the truth is that the iPad Air actually is as dramatic a product update as its name suggests.</p> <p>It’s not simply the smaller and lighter form. Or the increased processing power and battery life. Nor is it the improved and now freely bundled iLife and iWork apps.</p> <p>It’s the way those three elements of portability, power and productivity combine that make this the most useful and usable tablet Apple has ever made. It'll take more 64-bit ready apps, such as the CAD one demoed in the keynote video, to really show what the A7 can do. But based on our experience of the 5s, this is a chip that can hold its own with the finest Snapdragon, Exynos and Tegra silicon.</p> <p class="p2">The odd thing is that the iPhone 5s leveraged the A7 to do a few neat things besides making the experience that bit slicker. First is TouchID fingerprint scanning, which is absent in this device. The second is slow-mo video recording.</p> <p class="p1">We can understand the lack of TouchID, but the lack of slow-mo seems likely to be down to a hardware limitation we're not aware of. The decision to leave it out might have been a cost-saving exercise or a space-saving exercise, but there's probably more to it than that. iPads are often family devices that you wouldn't necessarily want to lock to specific people's digits,&nbsp;for example.</p> <p class="p1">Either way, Apple no doubt focused grouped the hell out of its usage scenarios before deciding whether to include it or not. According to Apple, the new iPad Air feels very different in the hands and is&nbsp;groundbreaking both in design and comfort.</p> <p>Despite its smaller bezels, it retains its beautifully crisp 9.7in&nbsp;2048x1536 display and also has two new colour schemes to boot – silver/white and space grey/black. Gold however is nowhere to be seen – sorry bling fans.</p> <p>Also absent is the long-rumoured&nbsp;Touch ID fingerprint Home button sensor, despite the fact that the iPad Air sports same 64-bit A7 chip found in the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>&nbsp;which is required for the fingerprint encryption to work.&nbsp;</p> <p>Why Apple&nbsp;omitted&nbsp;this function remains unclear, but it could be due to space-saving constraints or the fact that you can't comfortably unlock an iPad one-handed.</p> <p>Other juicy specs include dual WIMO antennas which promise twice the data speeds over Wi-Fi than the iPad 4 and a smaller battery (to help reduce the weight) which still offers 10 hours of use thanks&nbsp;to&nbsp;the more efficient A7 processor. And of course, it'll ship with the latest version of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/ios-7/ios-7/review" target="_blank">iOS 7</a>.</p> <p>The A7 chip itself provides the iPad Air with twice the 3D rendering power and 72x the graphics performance of the previous generation iPad too.</p> <p>Overall, Apple promises that the iPad Air will be a "drastically different&nbsp;experience" to any other iPad that's come before it, and we can't wait to caress its sleek build, so stay tuned for our hands-on preview.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> No iPad Air for Malaysia.
