That shouldn&rsquo;t be true for much longer, at least, as Google has opened up requests for test kits and aims to ship them this month.</p> <p>Granted, this kind of pre-release testing isn&rsquo;t for the average consumer; it&rsquo;s for developers prototyping prospective boards for Google&rsquo;s Project Ara devices. The submission form states, &ldquo; We will prioritize requests based on technical experience and the strength of your module concept.&rdquo; It&rsquo;s especially meant for anyone attempting to win the Project Ara Devleoper Prize Challenge, which will award US$100,000 for one particularly amazing (and fully working) module by 30 September.</p> <p>Google is moving quick on this round of requests, with submissions expected by this Thursday, 17 July and the first kits due to ship before the end of the month. Another tester review period will begin immediately and last until 17 August, so if you&rsquo;ve got a bright idea but need more than two days to get it all plotted out, well&hellip; you&rsquo;ve got a month and two days then. These come in three sizes &ndash; mini, medium and large &ndash; which have grids of 10, 18 and 27 square spaces on the back, arranged in groups of 1, 2 or 4.</p> <p>The front of an endo accepts a removable screen, while modules will be available to fill the slots on the back. So owners can fully customise their phone by adding in a 4G modem, for example, or a 5GHz WiFi module, or removing things that they don&#39;t use such as a fingerprint reader.</p> <p>More experimental phone owners might even look to add pico-projectors or remote controls, while the potential for adding in medical sensors for specialised use hasn&#39;t been overlooked either.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why modular? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A fortunate accident just before the first Ara Developers Conference made the benefits of an Ara handset clear.</p> <p>The night before the first functioning prototype was due to go on stage for its debut, someone dropped it and broke the screen. But, as Project Ara head Paul Eremenko joked during the presentation, once the phone is on the market, it&#39;ll be a simple matter to replace the screen by swapping out the front module for a new one.</p> <p>The same is obviously true for any other modules - if you&#39;re a big photography fan, and a new camera module is released, you&#39;ll be able to upgrade your phone without getting a whole new body; if you&#39;re a power user and want extra battery life, just add another one.</p> <p>The Ara team say that this means less waste, and since parts can be updated rather than thrown away the average lifespan of a phone will increase from two to five years. The downside, of course, is that modular components may end up costing more than a mass produced all-in-one (although Google is aiming to produce a basic handset for&nbsp;a very reasonable US$50) and may not be as robust.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/project-ara/modular-smartphones-are-building-blocks-tech-shambles/feature">Opinion - modular phones are the building blocks of a tech shambles</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Broke your screen? For example, each phone frame &ndash; Google has dubbed these &ldquo;Endos&rdquo;, because they&rsquo;re endoskeletons &ndash; can support multiple battery units, and charge all of them simultaneously.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As suggested by the Ara introductory video we saw last week, there will be three sizes of Endo, with the larger frames supporting more modules. Each Endo has a central &ldquo;spine&rdquo; that cannot be crossed by a module, but aside from that you can place them almost anywhere. The document mentions modules for batteries, Wi-Fi, chargers, displays, speakers, cameras and even a thermal imager (think <em>Predator</em> vision). There can even be modules that extend far past the boundaries of the Endo, such as a pulse oximeter (used for measuring oxygen levels in the bloodstream).</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/project-ara-modular-phone-will-use-electropermanent-magnets-keep-pieces-place/news">Project Ara modular phone will use electropermanent magnets to keep pieces in place</a></strong></p> <p>Where Endos have free module space, users will be able to 3D print spacer modules to fill the gaps. You&rsquo;ll also be able to fully customise Ara shells before purchase, having them 3D printed to a &ldquo;consumer-grade&rdquo; level by a third-party.</p> <p>Once you&rsquo;ve purchased your Endo, you&rsquo;ll be able to order new parts online (the Google Play Store being the likely source).</p> <p>This new information isn&rsquo;t exactly surprising, but it&rsquo;s confirmation of what we had been hoping for: a modular phone that is truly flexible, fully customisable and unlikely to collapse into obsolescence in the space of a year or two.</p> <p>Google is holding its first developer conference for Project Ara next week, on 15th April &ndash; and we&rsquo;ll almost certainly find out even more about its potential then. But a new video has afforded us a first glimpse of the project&rsquo;s progress and revealed some of the technology set to be put to use.</p> <p>The video, made by Google&rsquo;s Ara partner Phonebloks, features a handful of short talking head-style interviews that reveal some aspects of Ara we haven&rsquo;t seen before.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Probably most intriguing is the ingenious way in which Ara components will fit the phone body: electropermanent magnets. After components are slid into place, a brief jolt of electricity (controlled by an app) locks them in, and they won&rsquo;t come out until the user wants them to &ndash; power is required only to lock them in place initially, so even if your phone battery dies they won&rsquo;t drop out. This also means that Ara phones won&rsquo;t require an exterior case to stop the various parts from falling out.</p> <p>We also get a brief glimpse of three Ara prototype bodies: a 2 x 5-tile mini-phone, a 3 x 6 medium model (most likely the mainstream Ara shell), and a large phablet-esque 4 x 7 body. The bigger these models, the more modules can be attached &ndash; the 4 x 7 body, for instance, can apparently house up to nine modules &ndash; but even the small one can accommodate six.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll know even more about Ara soon, because Google has scheduled the first ever Ara Developer Conference for 15th April. Expect more interesting revelations then.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/project-ara/modular-smartphones-are-building-blocks-tech-shambles/feature" target="_blank">Modular smartphones are the building blocks of a tech shambles</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_Q1JzJadgHY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/project-ara-modular-phone-will-use-electropermanent-magnets-keep-pieces-place/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Google Project Ara Smartphones Fri, 04 Apr 2014 10:34:26 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1434843 at http://www.stuff.tv Modular smartphones are the building blocks of a tech shambles http://www.stuff.tv/project-ara/modular-smartphones-are-building-blocks-tech-shambles/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> If you’re hoping a Lego-style phone will boost the industry and save the environment, we&#039;ve got some bad news... </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="548" height="411" title="Modular smartphones are the building blocks of a tech shambles" alt="Modular smartphones are the building blocks of a tech shambles" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/ara_1.jpg?1395159251" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>When I was a kid, I loved Lego. Heck, as an adult, I love Lego. There&rsquo;s something wonderful about starting out with a pile of bricks and ending up with an object you had in your head. But that kind of modular flexibility is rare in technology. Instead, there&rsquo;s a tendency towards appliance devices, with smartphones, tablets and PCs locking out users, finally eradicating the (somewhat romanticised) notion of being able to upgrade components to eke out yet more years of life from cherished kit.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like many advances in technology, this all seems so obvious and so simple. Why throw away an entire phone if you want more storage, a better camera, or some snazzy new feature everyone claims Samsung just copied from Apple while simultaneously running adverts about how stupid iPhone owners are? Instead, just bolt on the bits you want &mdash; literally. The tiny snag is the concept as it stands doesn&rsquo;t make a great deal of sense &mdash; it&rsquo;s smoke-and-mirrors simplicity rather than the real thing.</p> <p>From an engineering perspective, it&rsquo;s a nightmare. Today&rsquo;s devices are carefully considered as complete units, their svelte forms only possible because engineers spend countless hours refining designs, devising bespoke components, and making the best use of the tiny amount of available space. Replace a case with a bunch of block-based components that could be attached in a somewhat random fashion, and you suddenly have all kinds of issues with routing, redundancy, compatibility and efficiency; there&rsquo;s even the extra space taken up by the enclosures for the components themselves.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/oDAw7vW7H0c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The assumption waste would be reduced also seems questionable. Mobile technology evolves at a blistering pace, and so how long would modular components truly remain compatible for? How long would it be before Exciting New Module X required Expensive New Motherboard Y? Although it might be possible to upgrade specific components in a piecemeal fashion, chances are you&rsquo;d see a similar lifecycle for the bulk of them, hindering any eco-friendly savings. Even if you generously assume some kind of Magic Modular Phone, where the screen and motherboard could last for a decade, upgrading components alone will still have environmental impact; these things still need making and shipping, and old parts will (unlike a whole device) retain little resale value, leading to waste.</p> <p>From an industry perspective, the concept of modularity is an even bigger ask. It was hard enough for the EU to convince manufacturers to settle on a charging standard, and even then the likes of Apple wriggled out of doing so by selling adapters. Now imagine getting everyone to agree on a modular standard. And should that miracle occur, what then? Major jumps in technology around such limitations would be less likely, innovation stemmed if components all had to adhere to a strict interchangeable spec. Every phone would soon resemble every other, while economy of scale would counter-intuitively be given a beating as well; because although these devices would all be akin to Lego, everyone would be manufacturing their own bits and pieces, in a vastly fragmented ecosystem.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Project Ara" alt="Project Ara" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-project-ara-02_0.jpg?1395159251" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So what first seems like a simple, obvious idea is in reality a mess waiting to happen, and one that will offer few benefits for the end user. They won&rsquo;t save a great deal of money, few will care about interchangeable parts anyway, some will wonder why there are big gaps on the back of their smartphones if they can&rsquo;t get the various bits to line up properly, and a few geeks will proclaim it the best thing ever, before getting distracted approximately eight seconds later by some great new Google robot that gets injected directly into your hypothalamus.</p> <p>Really, it&rsquo;s all a distraction anyway. What we should be doing is encouraging manufacturers, carriers and service providers to support gadgets for longer, and for developers to ensure apps are highly optimised to the point they&rsquo;ll happily run on years-old devices. And when devices finally reach the end of their useful lives, they should be recycled and reused. But that kind of idealism costs money and so it&rsquo;s probably just as unrealistic as that of Phonebloks.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-teams-phonebloks-project-ara-modular-phones/news-0">Motorola&#39;s Project Ara: the modular smartphone that&#39;ll never be obsolete</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Phonebloks concept" alt="Phonebloks concept" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/phonebloks-concept.jpg?1395159251" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Modular tech madness </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/project-ara/modular-smartphones-are-building-blocks-tech-shambles/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Google Project Ara Smartphones ZTE Mon, 17 Mar 2014 14:18:50 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1433808 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: Google’s Ara modular phone secrets will be revealed in April, and Star Wars Episode VII casts its villain http://www.stuff.tv/project-ara/fully-charged-google-s-ara-modular-phone-secrets-will-be-revealed-april-and-star-wars-ep <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hey!
