The X&rsquo;s AMOLED tech gives colours a richer, more saturated look and contrast is punchier. On the downside, whites aren&rsquo;t as pure and bright as on the Nexus 4 and we found it difficult to pick out details in bright sunlight.</p> <p>Videos, games and photos all look gorgeous here. There&rsquo;s NFC and 4G LTE support too.</p> <p>Benchmarking with <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antutu.ABenchMark&amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">AnTuTu</a>, the X garnered a rating of just over 18,000, making it comparable in processing and graphics power to the Google Nexus 4, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z</a> and Samsung Galaxy S3. With this turned on, twisting your wrist twice brings up the camera app no matter what you&rsquo;re doing, and touching anywhere on the screen takes a photo (holding your finger down will take continuous shots). Hitting the movie button starts capturing 1080p video straight away.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a lovely idea but not without issues. First, the wrist-twisting thing doesn&rsquo;t always work, which kind of negates the whole point of it. Second, the touch-to-shoot mode turns off touch-to-focus, so shots often come out too bright or (more often) too dark.&nbsp;</p> <p>Actual camera performance is decent but fairly unremarkable. The larger pixels in the sensor work better in low light than some rival cameras, and the addition of a slow-motion video mode is fun, but images won&#39;t knock you down with clarity or contrast. They&rsquo;re just good. There&rsquo;s also a 2MP front-facing camera able to capture 1080p video.</p> <p>For more Moto X pics taken during testing (and in full resolution) head to our Flickr set <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/sets/72157635269848333/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-camera-app.jpg?1390964970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-photo-sample-2.jpg?1390964970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-photo-sample-3.jpg?1390964970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-photo-sample-1.jpg?1390964970" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> App happy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While Motorola hasn&rsquo;t fussed too heavily with the standard Android 4.2.2 interface (in fact at first glance you might think it&rsquo;s the same version used on the Google Nexus 4), there are a number of additions, all of them pretty useful.</p> <p>Active Display shows off important notifications and the clock even when the phone is in standby &ndash; these fade in and out regularly &ndash; with the idea being to discourage you from constantly checking the phone. Currently that&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android 4.4 KitKat</a>, and we reckon it&#39;s the world&#39;s best smartphone operating system. Thankfully the Moto X also has it loaded up, straight out of the box.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android 4.4 KitKat review</a></strong></p> <p>Unlike other manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, Motorola has left vanilla Andorid alone for the most part, mercifully saving us from bloatware and cartoony icons.</p> <p>There are still a few tweaks though, and they&#39;re all actually pretty useful.</p> <p>The Moto X&#39;s most impressive party trick is its always-on voice recognition. Saying &quot;Ok Google Now&quot; fires up Google Now, which you can then use to search your device, the web, open apps and much more, all without having to lift a single finger to touch the screen. Impressive stuff.</p> <p>The Moto X also features Active Notifications which automatically flash up on your screen after it cleverly works out you&#39;re looking at it. Sliding it out for your pocket or giving it a nudge on a table will automatically show you your notifications for example, but there&#39;s more to it than that.</p> <p>Tapping on a notification will show you more details about it, like the subject line and sender of an email and it&#39;s a lot handier than guessing whether or not a flashing LED is a text from your mum or if it&#39;s just another Nigerian Prince asking for your bank account details.</p> <p>The Nexus 5&#39;s stock Android 4.4 KitKat OS is of course fantastic in its own right, and we like the fact that it has Google Now as one if its home screens, just one finger-flick away.</p> <p>The Nexus 5 will also be one of the first devices to get Google&#39;s OS updates, which is something for impatient Android fanatics to consider.</p> <p>Still, for the genuinely useful additions that the Moto X brings to the table (without messing around with the clean stock Android look too much), we&#39;re giving this to the Moto X.</p> <p><em>Winner:&nbsp;</em><strong>Moto X</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: Android OS" alt="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: Android OS" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-and-nexus-4_0.jpg?1391007993" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oh snap </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Neither the Nexus 5 or Moto X takes photos that will blow you away (look to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">LG G2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 1020</a> if you want really impressive smartphone snaps), but they both take decent shots all the same.</p> <p>The Moto X has a 10MP camera, but those extra megapixels don&#39;t offer much improvement when comparing shots taken with the Nexus 5&#39;s 8MP offering. If anything, the Nexus 5 produces more details even in well-lit conditions.</p> <p>You can however fire up the Moto X&#39;s camera in seconds - all it takes is a quick double-flick of your wrist - which is a handy way to take spontaneous shots regardless of what app you&#39;re in.&nbsp;</p> <p>Its camera app is also easy to use, and you can drag your finger to manually select your focus and metering point.</p> <p>The Nexus 5 is better in low-light conditions as well though, thanks to its built-in optical image stabilisation (OIS), and its frustrating auto-focus problems have thankfully been sorted with an update.</p> <p>While neither phone excels in the camera department, the Nexus 5 wins this round, thanks to its OIS smarts and more detailed shots.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Nexus 5</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" alt="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-camera-app_0.jpg?1391007993" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" alt="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera%20%281%29.JPG?1391007993" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> X &#039;gon give it to ya </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Moto X serves up some of the best battery life we&#39;ve seen from a modern smartphone to date, and lasts a day with heavy use. For one thing, those who buy the Moto X through US carrier AT&amp;T will be able to customise its design to a dizzying degree: there are two front colours, 18 back colours, seven accent colours (for buttons etc.) and the option to have a message printed on the back. There’ll also be a teak wooden back available later in the year. All Moto X handsets will be built in the US (Texas to be precise), and will be priced at US$199 on all five major carriers.</p> <p>One other surprise, and possibly not a welcome one: the Moto X won’t be coming to the UK.
