Microsoft clearly intends for the WinPho8.1 version to fulfil much the same role, though presumably without helping you get all kill-happy.</p> <p>The service will be heavily linked to Microsoft&#39;s Bing search engine and will be fully voice-controllable. You&#39;ll be able to use it for standard tasks such as setting calendar entries, but more impressively, it will learn about your habits, tastes and contacts, and understand natural language. Introducing the service, Microsoft&#39;s Joe Belfiore gave the example of telling Cortana to &quot;remind me to ask my sister about her puppy next time I speak to her&quot;; Cortana worked out instantly who his sister was and set a reminder that would flash up next time he called her.</p> <p>Chief to this working properly will be the Notebook feature in which Cortana will store information about your interests, the people who matter to you and what your daily habits are. As she learns more about you, Cortana will add entries to the Notebook, which you&#39;ll be able to approve or otherwise. If she comes to the conclusion that your wife is someone important to you, for instance, she&#39;ll add her to your &#39;Inner circle&#39;. If you don&#39;t correct that information, she might make the decision to put a call from your wife through to you even if it comes in during your designated &#39;quiet hours&#39;.&nbsp;</p> <p>So in short, Cortana will meld Siri-like talents with Google Now-style capabilities, but judging by the demonstration given by Belfiore,&nbsp;she looks twice as clever as the pair of them put together. We&#39;re interested to see how smart she is in the real world.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Meet Cortana!" alt="Windows Phone 8.1 revealed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/cortana.jpg?1396516810" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Cortana will be able to work with other apps and services" alt="Windows Phone 8.1 revealed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/windows-phone-8.1-cortana-4.jpg?1396516810" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Other new talents </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If Cortana is the big new feature arriving in Windows Phone 8.1, there are several others that you&#39;re likely to use far more regularly.</p> <p>Action Center is a notifications hub; pull it down from the top of the screen and you&#39;ll have access to settings such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as seeing a list of recent texts, emails and app updates. How is that better than fingerprint scanning?</strong><br />Well, the big deal with palm vein scanning (Fujitsu&rsquo;s technology is called PalmSecure) is that it&rsquo;s touch-free: instead of pressing your fingertip onto a sensor, you hold your hand palm-down over one. It&rsquo;s more hygienic, you see.</p> <p><strong>How does it actually work?</strong><br />Listen up carefully, because this is scientific. Using near-infrared rays, the sensor is capable of reading the pattern of veins in your hand. The rays are absorbed by the deoxidised haemoglobin in the veins, and this causes them to appear as a black pattern in the scanner &ndash; a pattern which is particular to your hand only.</p> <p><strong>But what if someone chops off my hand &ndash; won&rsquo;t they be able to use it to get into my private files?</strong><br />Nope. The blood has to be actively flowing through your veins. So your laptop is safe. You&rsquo;ll still be down one hand, mind you. But swings and roundabouts.</p> <p><strong>Is PalmSecure only available on the one laptop?</strong><br />At first, yes. But Fujitsu is using the Lifebook U904 as a way to showcase the technology. It sees it being implemented into all sorts of devices in the future as a replacement for passwords &ndash; not to mention using it for entry into secure buildings.</p> <p><strong>And what about the laptop itself?</strong><br />The Lifebook U904 is a business-centric Ultrabook with a 14in screen and very portable design &ndash; it&rsquo;s just 15.5mm in depth and 1.4kg in weight. Fujitsu claims that it&rsquo;s the thinnest business-class laptop on the market, in fact.</p> <p>The screen packs in an insane amount of pixels, boasting a 3200 x 1400 resolution, and there&rsquo;ll be an option to make this a touchscreen if you wish. Another option is a wireless 3G/4G data connection &ndash; but of course these things will bump up the price significantly.</p> <p><strong>So what is the price?</strong><br />Fujitsu hasn&rsquo;t officially announced that yet, but it&rsquo;s likely to set you back at least &pound;1000 even for the base-level configuration.</p> <p><strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/hot-stuff" target="_blank">CLICK HERE FOR MORE HOT STUFF</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Hot Stuff Laptops Windows 8 Fri, 14 Mar 2014 15:35:03 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1433724 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-ativ-book-9-plus/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This MacBook-baiting Ultrabook has the highest resolution screen of any laptop. Great for sharing content on a coffee table. Not that we&rsquo;ve ever done that.</p> <p>The display is a ludicrously high-def 3200x1800, which equates to 276ppi. A MacBook Pro With Retina Display, by contrast, can only manage 227ppi. Pixels-per-inch isn&#39;t the only important aspect of a screen, of course - but fortunately the Ativ Book 9 Plus also has excellent viewing angles and 10-point multi-touch which works a charm with Windows 8.1.</p> <p>Battery life is pretty good - we got a useful 7.5hrs out of it in normal use - and even the speakers are great. And the T100 is just about as close as it gets.</p> <p>A sturdy duo that&rsquo;s not too top-heavy on laps, the Transformer Book follows Asus&rsquo; tried-and-tested formula pretty closely. Unlike rivals, which balance tablets on docks or provide flimsy keyboard covers, the T100&rsquo;s build is tidy, solid and quick to dock or undock.</p> <p>The T100 slots right into its dock accessory with a satisfying click, and now that Asus has replaced the old slider (which could get stuck) with a big button, swapping between modes is fuss-free. When docked the T100&rsquo;s screen doesn&rsquo;t tilt back quite as much as we&rsquo;d like, but it&rsquo;s still a better set-up than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-2/review" target="_blank">Surface 2&rsquo;s</a> awkward two-angled kickstand.</p> <p>This is hands-down the best typing experience on a tablet this size. Although the keyboard is inevitably more cramped than a regular laptop (to match the 10.1in screen&rsquo;s size), the keys themselves have good depth and fast typers will fly. The plastic keyboard dock (there&rsquo;s a soft touch panel on the bottom) means it&rsquo;s easy to rest your hands when typing, too - unlike the sometimes slippier <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-pad-infinity/review" target="_blank">Transformer Infinity</a>.</p> <p>The trackpad is responsive but as with almost every other Transformer tab it&rsquo;s a touch erratic, occasionally moving either too quickly or with a small delay. Thanks to the full-sized USB 3.0 port, adding a mouse is an option when a flat surface is available. It&rsquo;s located on the left edge making for a slightly messy set-up that could annoy right-handed mouse-wielders but having the option is a bit of a luxury all the same.</p> <p>We have only a couple of niggling isses with the T100&#39;s design. The use of plastic doesn&rsquo;t mean it&rsquo;s light - it&rsquo;s pushing the scales at 550g for the tab and a smidge over 1kg for the pair. Compared to the lighter, more premium<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank"> iPad Air</a>, say, you&rsquo;ll feel the weight of the duo in your bag. Still, it&rsquo;s lighter than a laptop and the keyboard dock can be left at home some days.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s also the ugly duckling of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus" target="_blank">Asus line-up</a> - the glossy plastic finish of the tablet itself doesn&rsquo;t look or feel as lovely as the aluminium Android Asus offerings such as 2013&rsquo;s gorgeous <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-pad-tf701t/review" target="_blank">Transformer Pad</a>. Start off by building residential apartments for your Bitizens to stay in. Add retail stores within the Tiny Death Star and assign jobs for Bitizens to slog in the name of the Empire. Check in on your tower every so often to stock products, put them up for sale, and expand your tower with more credits. Send your Bitizens to their desired level via the elevator and upgrade its movement speed with Galactic Bux.</p> <p dir="ltr">New elements introduced in the Star Wars makeover include missions issued by the nefarious Emperor Palpatine. Complete the missions, and you’ll be rewarded with more credits that'll bring you closer to the completion of the Tiny Death Star.</p> <p dir="ltr">New Imperial levels which require special Bitizens, add a new gameplay mechanic. For example, you can send Supply Officers to the Interrogation room to gather Rebel Secrets and exchange them for credits.</p> <p dir="ltr">Star Wars and Tiny Tower fans will be tickled by the unbelievably cute cutscenes that pay tribute to the movies. Follow the prompts to find Rebel spies like Princess Leia, and you’ll be issued a Galactic Bux, plus a cutscene depicting a firefight between her and Imperial stormtroopers. If you’re logged into your account and Windows 8 is fully patched, you might, just might, see the Windows Update option when you fire up the Store – we found that swearing at our computer and threatening it with a blunt object helped. There’s no option to download it directly from the internet, nor can you apply it through Windows Update.</p> <p class="p1">If you’re lucky enough (it might be worth buying a lottery ticket if it’s shown up) then you’re faced with a whopping 3.5GB download. Fortunately you can carry on working on your computer while it’s downloading, which is great for tech journos writing about the installation of Windows 8.1. The entire process took about an hour and a half on our aging Sony laptop, and it restarted a couple of times, before throwing us into a seemingly unending stream of passive-aggressive messages. However, it’s just about forgivable given the sheer range of esoteric hardware Microsoft has to deal with.</p> <p class="p1">Of course, if you’ve yet to install Windows 8 you can buy the whole 8.1 shebang as a download for £120, or cheaper on DVD if you hunt around a bit. Fortunately this behaviour can be modified by right-clicking on the taskbar, then choosing ‘Properties’ followed by ‘Navigation’ and then ‘Show the Apps view automatically when I go to Start.’ Still not as useful or powerful as the Start menu of old – that would just be too handy - but it's a definite improvement.</p> <p class="p1">You can also set the computer to boot straight to the desktop, and there are settings which stop annoying menus randomly popping up when you move the mouse around the screen. It means you can basically ignore the entire Metro user interface aside from the apps list: a boon for non-touchscreen desktops and laptops.</p> <p class="p1">If you still want your 'proper' Start button back, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81-start-button-lie-heres-how-make-it-real/feature">you'd be much better off trying something like this</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="838" height="628" title="Windows 8.1 review Start button" alt="Windows 8.1 review Start button" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/3.png?1382413651" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Search goes super </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The in-built search feature was another really weird part of Windows 8 - type in some terms and it would then ask you where you wanted to look, which kind of defeats the point of searching for something. There's not enough of the good stuff to worry iOS or Android.&nbsp; It’s also still missing proper games as opposed to tablet ones: unsurprising considering every app available on the Windows Store has to work on every Windows 8-running computer, powerful or not.&nbsp; </p> <p>And there's still woefully little synergy between mobile-style apps and the desktop mode – to-ing and fro-ing between two versions of Internet Explorer can make you pine for Windows 7, Mac OS X or in fact any other operating system. </p> <p>The good news is that Windows 8.1 in desktop mode still supports all of your Windows 7 software, so you can stick Steam on and play Super Meat Boy to your heart's content.
