In the Cupertino corner, Apple’s taken the wrappers off its latest and (in its own words) “greatest tablet ever” - <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/hands-ipad-air-review-slimmed-down-powered/feature" target="_blank">The iPad Air</a>. Can Apple's thinly-sliced slate compete with the flexibility of Microsoft's second-gen Surface?</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/ben-stinson" title="View user profile.">Ben Stinson</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Beauty under the surface </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="MsoNormal">On the design front, both tablets feel more like an evolution of their predecessors than a sea change. The iPad Air has gone for a major slim-down, weighing in at a svelte 469g (28 percent less than the model it replaces) and measuring an almost absurdly thin 7.5mm in depth. The 43 percent-smaller bezel is the main design change you’ll notice if you’re upgrading from an older model: the front is now almost entirely screen. And it's simply gorgeous. As Stuff's Sophie Charara says in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">full review</a>: “It’s the new champion of tablet hardware design. Cool aluminium, almost unbroken lines and drilled speaker grilles make for a familiar and elegant look. It’s the kind of object you’ll find yourself idly caressing.”</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The Air is solidly made and there's no flex to it at all, although you'll need to watch out for scratches to the back and sides: both mark up a little too easily for our liking.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The new Surface is also a refinement upon the original: there’s a slimming down from 9.4mm to 8.9mm, and 5g shaved off the weight, despite other dimensions staying put. And it's strikingly well put together, as our reviewer Mark Payton <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-2/review">remarks</a>: “‘Solidly built’ doesn’t do it justice - the magnesium casing’s fit and finish is as near to flawless as you have any right to expect from a product wearing a £360 price tag.”</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The kick-stand we loved from the original Surface RT remains, but it now has a 40- as well as a 20-degree tilt – a welcome addition. One slight issue we have is that, while the Surface 2 is a pleasure to hold in landscape mode (even one-handed), its 16:9 screen looks somewhat gawky when you twist it to portrait mode; the iPad Air looks and feels like the better device for ebook reading.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Winner:</strong><strong> </strong>iPad Air (just)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface 2" alt="Microsoft Surface 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2_0.jpg?1383208330" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pixels pushed </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="MsoNormal">The original Surface was deemed a little lacking in its screen specs, something that Microsoft has rectified with version 2 – ramping the resolution of its 10.6in TFT touchscreen up to 1080p for a pixel density of 208ppi. As our review says, "It may not quite match a Retina, but it’s bright, sharp and has great viewing angles."</p> <p class="MsoNormal">With the iPad, the same 2046 x 1536 Retina display that has graced the last two generations of Apple’s maxi-slab puts Apple at an obvious advantage. You may not notice from a distance, but up close and when displaying high-resolution photos, the difference becomes more apparent. It rocks a 4:3 aspect ratio that our review calls "perfect for the web, email, ebooks and apps". It's, in short, the best screen we've encountered on a tablet.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">One complaint we have about both tablets: their screens attract greasy fingerprints like overpriced provincial nightclubs attract footballers. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Winner:</strong><strong>&nbsp;</strong>iPad Air</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="805" title="The iPad Air has a gloriously sharp Retina display screen" alt="iPad Air screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPadAir-Retina.jpg?1383208330" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power upped </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="MsoNormal">iOS is built from the ground-up to be a beautifully smooth experience – even if you were running multiple background apps or browser tabs, the A6-toting iPad was always a great experience. With the 64-bit A7 processor on board, the Air will laugh in the face of multi-tasking and next-gen mobile games. In fact, Apple claims it’s up to eight times faster than last year’s silicon. In day-to-day use right now, the Air is fantastically smooth and stutter-free.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The Air's 64-bit architecture is already starting to make its advantages apparent, albeit not in an earth-shattering way (yet). From our review: "All the iWork and iLife apps are now optimised for 64-bit, but it’s not just Garageband that will run best on the iPad Air. Showcase tricks that you can actually try out on day one include enhanced reflections, shadows and cutscene graphics in the absolutely gorgeous (if a bit of a trudge in terms of gameplay) Infinity Blade III, real-time key-matching in djay 2, 720p video decoding in vjay and real-time karaoke effects in Smule’s Sing."</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Microsoft sticks with Nvidia power for the Surface 2, moving on to the fourth generation Tegra processor (currently gracing other tablet and hybrid efforts from HP, Asus and Toshiba).</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The original was underpowered and plagued with lag that, for many, severely soured the perception of Windows RT – but with the Surface 2 performance is superb. From our review: "We deliberately tried to murder the device by opening every installed app (the entire Office suite, every installed Modern app plus Halo Spartan Assault), then switched quickly between them over and over again. The Surface didn’t flinch. It’s quick to boot into Windows 8.1, and - once you’re logged in - everything is responsive to the touch. In most scenarios, you’ll find it an easy and pleasurable tablet performance, whether you’re scanning through emails and appointments, or hitting a quick play of Jetpack Joyride." </p> <p class="MsoNormal">The only drawback we found – and it's a minor one – is that Microsoft has put a ceiling on the number of apps you can run in the background.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Winner:</strong><strong> </strong>Draw</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple A7 processor" alt="Apple A7 processor" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-a7-processor_0.jpg?1383208330" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Two cameras, one cut </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="MsoNormal">Tablet photography qualms aside, the new iPad has surprised us by sticking with the same 5MP sensor with 1080p video – we’d been expecting a boost to 8MP. Even more surprising is the lack of features in comparison to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5S</a> (no panorama, burst mode or slo-mo) which, considering the devices share the same 64-bit processing power, is a little bewildering. That said, as our review puts it, the iPad Air's camera is "still one of the best tablet cameras we’ve seen. The Air’s main snapper captures more detail than rival tabs, making for sharper, clearer shots. The colours aren’t as accurate as the best smartphone cameras, including the iPhone 5s’, but it’s a respectable back-up."</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The Surface 2 has had some improvements in this department, going with a similar 5MP, 1080p capable sensor to the Air but making it more usable thanks to the simple addition of an LED flash. Picture quality is decent, nothing more.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Skype duties are handled by a front-facing 3.5MP camera that’ll wow your contacts with 1080p video. As we note in our review, this performs remarkably well in low light thanks to some worthwhile fettling by Microsoft: "The Skype calls we made during the week suggest that it was time well spent: you’ll look glorious to callers, even by candlelight." </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Winner:</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Draw</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Surface2-Rear-Camera.jpg?1383208330" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Get connected – or don&#039;t </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="MsoNormal">Connectivity is vital if you plan on being productive with a tablet – something that Microsoft has gone to great lengths to emphasise. The Surface 2 rocks a single USB 3.0, micro-SD expansion up to 64GB, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi modes including N, Dual-Band and Wi-Fi Direct. There’s also video output provided by the Mini DisplayPort for piping HD content to your TV or monitor.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">The Air matches Surface 2 for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth specifications, but Apple has stuck with tradition by making the iPad Air resolutely barren of any external connectivity options that don’t require additional dongles. With the right adapter you’ll get (limited) USB connectivity, SD card reading and screen mirroring via HDMI or VGA.&nbsp; If you’re a child of the cloud-connected generation then you might not deem the lack of ports enough to put you off, though again for productivity’s sake, a more elegant solution than a plethora of dongles would be welcomed.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Winner:</strong><strong>&nbsp;</strong>Surface 2</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Surface2-rear.jpg?1383208330" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> There&#039;s battery life to be had </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Microsoft quotes the Surface 2 battery life at 10 hours of use, but in our testing it managed between six and eight hours per charge. But there’s no denying that simplicity still works and improvements such as the quick-settings draw work as fantastically well on the big screen as they do in the smaller confines of the iPhone. Our review sums it up thus: "We still believe iOS needs more customisability and ‘live’ information, but for style, slickness and simplicity it’s way out in front of rivals."</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Windows RT 8.1 is unashamedly different to the experience you’ll get on iOS. For those familiar with Microsoft’s combination of tiled menus and old-school desktop environment, you’ll feel right at home managing windows and apps separately with your own freedom to manage and interact with them. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">The unmissable elephant in the room here is Apps, which is what ultimately drives most people’s tablet usage. iOS works exceptionally well with the 475,000-strong selection of tablet-specific apps that are now available. RT is a different story entirely: the selection of apps is still verging on dire, with the big names like Facebook only just getting round to releasing an RT compatible app. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">Microsoft can’t even claim the Surface to be the singular tablet home of Microsoft Office any longer, with an iPad version already available with an Office subscription.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong>Winner:</strong><strong>&nbsp;</strong>iPad Air</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iOS7-iPad.jpg?1383208330" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="MsoNormal">As far as specs go, the Surface 2 is a very realistic competitor to the iPad, and even beats it in a few areas such as the camera and connectivity. The familiarity of desktop-style apps such as Office will make it a no-brainer for anyone planning on being relatively productive, and the keyboard covers are a stroke of genius that third parties have (so far) failed to match for the iPad. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">If you’re buying a tablet to consume the vast amount of information that is digitally thrown at you on a daily basis, or equally you’re happy being productive on one of the many very well designed tablet apps that Apple’s store offers, then the iPad is for you.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Us? There, we said it. ‘Solidly built’ doesn’t do it justice - the magnesium casing’s fit and finish is as near to flawless as you have any right to expect from a product wearing a £360 price tag.</p> <p>As a tablet, the 8.9mm-thick Surface is a pleasure to hold in landscape mode, even single handed. However, twist that 10.6in screen &nbsp;to portrait mode, and the 16:9 frame suddenly looks slightly gawky (an issue if you’re a heavy ebook reader - the iPad still offers a more natural experience).</p> <p>The tablet Surface 2 is only half of the story. We can't imagine why you'd buy one without the keyboard (it's the point of the product in many ways), &nbsp;and it’s as an ad hoc laptop that Microsoft has given the Surface the smartest upgrades. But more on that later.&nbsp;</p> <p>Giving the kickstand two settings (one at 20 degrees, and another at 40) doesn't sound radical, but it transforms the Surface. The original's single setting was a pain: if you were over five foot two (or sat on the floor with the RT on your desk), you were forced to stare down at the screen from a really odd viewing angle. &nbsp; Now, it works: click the stand out to the 40-degree setting, and you can work for hours without neck or eye strain.</p> <p>The Surface 2 has enough ports and connections to work for most of us most of the time. You can boost storage by up to 64GB with a microSD card, and hitch up an external drive via a single USB 3.0 port (with transfer speeds up to 4x faster than the original). There’s Bluetooth 4.0 to beam tunes to compatible headphones or external speakers. And if you want to make your Surface a TV source, just plumb it from the HD video-out port.&nbsp;</p> <p>The only other interruptions to the Surface’s edges are the volume rocker, power button, and pins on the base for the famous snap-on keyboard and right-hand edge for the power supply. The ‘thunk’ of the keyboard attaching itself to the Surface is one of the wonders of the engineering world, not least because it manages to latch on regardless of how thoughtless you are.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface 2" alt="Microsoft Surface 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-01.jpg?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface 2 two-stage kickstand" alt="Microsoft Surface 2 two-stage kickstand" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-11.jpg?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface 2 rear logo" alt="Microsoft Surface 2 rear logo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-13.jpg?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface 2 better as laptop" alt="Microsoft Surface 2 better as laptop" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-09.jpg?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PERFORMANCE: NOW THAT’S MORE LIKE IT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you owned or had chance to play with the RT, you’ll know that it was haunted by lag, especially in its early days (updates went some way to relieving the pain over time). Launching or switching apps was punctuated by freezes and stutters - not a trivial problem, when the whole appeal of Windows 8 was the variety of cool ways you could interact with it.</p> <p>The good news is that the Surface 2 has banished the stutters.&nbsp;Microsoft claims that the 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 behind the Surface 2’s screen is up to four times faster than the Tegra 3 that tried - but often failed - to push along the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-windows-rt/review">Surface RT</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>We deliberately tried to murder the device by opening every installed app (the entire Office suite, every installed Modern app plus Halo Spartan Assault), then switched quickly between them over and over again. The Surface didn’t flinch.&nbsp;</p> <p>It’s quick to boot into Windows 8.1, and - once you’re logged in - everything is responsive to the touch. In most scenarios, you’ll find it an easy and pleasurable tablet performance, whether you’re scanning through emails and appointments, or hitting a quick play of Jetpack Joyride.&nbsp;</p> <p>One small complaint. The Surface 2 does have a ceiling in the number of apps that it will allow to run in the background.&nbsp;</p> <p>Microsoft’s solution (a pop-up, warning you to close a background app before it will allow the the new one to run) works, for sure, but it’s an irritant that we can’t believe was impossible to engineer away.</p> <p>Still, that niggle aside, it runs smoothly all day. Microsoft claims up to 10 hours from a full charge: we managed between six and eight hours a day, which is still an impressively improved battery life.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Surface 2 is transformed from the original, and offers plenty of power for most uses. And for the life of us, we can’t understand why Microsoft continues to reject its own strengths. For years, developers have made impressive Windows applications for a worldwide audience. So why make something that still has a desktop mode that can’t enjoy the fruits of that legacy? Maybe the aim is to coax those developers into building apps for the new Modern UI - but more on apps later.</p> <p>On the upside, your new Surface 2 comes with the full desktop Office suite ready installed, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and, now, Outlook. If you’re locked into Microsoft’s ecosystem at work, this is excuse enough to take a Surface seriously.&nbsp;</p> <p>In contrast, Google fans will struggle. Gmail and Google Contacts sync with the native Mail and People apps well enough, but there’s no way to sync Google Calendar with the W8 Calendar app.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Surface 2 comes with the freshly released (but RT version of)&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81/review">Windows 8.1</a>. This is no paltry point release: many of Windows 8's flaws are fixed, with transformational changes to search and multi-tasking. Even the Start button’s back (albeit with a brand new job), and you can now boot into desktop mode (a little gift for those driven insane by continually having to bypass the Start screen).</p> <p>8.1 vanquishes Windows 8's most illogical excesses, but it isn’t a complete cure. With no obvious rhyme or reason, there are still two Internet Explorers (desktop and app), and settings that you may never find. Ever. Somewhere in Windows 8, there’s brilliance: it bundles mobile and desktop in a way that Apple may never match, and the new Bing-powered search is stunning. But for all of 8.1’s good work, Microsoft still has a way to go in forcing out all of the compromises.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Surface 2: comes with Office suite" alt="Surface 2: comes with Office suite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-review-office-word.png?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Calendar users beware </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There's around 425 million GMail account holders in the world, many of whom live in Google Calendar. Sure, your GMail and Google Contacts will push and pull happily enough, but your Calendar will remain stubbornly empty. They’re decent photographs and videos, too, even if they degrade quite noticeably in low light. Let’s leave it at that.</p> <p>The front 3.5MP camera is a different story, however.&nbsp;</p> <p>Microsoft has built Skype right into Windows 8 on the Surface (it would do: it owns the company), and claims that much effort has gone into tweaking the camera to make video calls as good as possible, even in low light conditions (where, by a twist of fate, most calls are made). So you can buy a Surface 2 for just £360, but we can only ever imagine it as a £460 product, keyboard included.</p> <p>You have a choice between the £100 Touch Cover and £110 Type Cover, then. The clues as to the differences between the two are in the names: the super-skinny Touch has keys that are flat to their base, while those on the Type are raised.</p> <p>Our Surface came with a Touch Cover 2, which manages to be <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/hands-pressure-sensitive-keyboard-and-music-kit-could-save-microsoft-surface/news">2mm thinner than its predecessor while also adding backlighting</a>. &nbsp;Once we’d got over the initial strangeness of tapping on a flat board, the Touch cover actually proves a brilliant companion to the Surface, though the drumming noise can be distractingly loud and the swipe to delete gestures are hit and miss.&nbsp;</p> <p>After a day or two, the error count dropped, and we found ourselves typing accurately and fluidly. And aside from being useful, the backlighting is beautifully done (you’ll get what we mean when you see it). There’s also a Bluetooth adaptor coming in the New Year that will let you use the Touch Cover without snapping it to the Surface.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Touch Cover 2" alt="Touch Cover 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-14.jpg?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Touch Cover 2" alt="Touch Cover 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-2-06.jpg?1393467611" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> APPS: TIME FOR MORE THAN THE ESSENTIALS </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It’s still a problem. More essential apps have also landed since you launched Windows 8, not least Facebook.&nbsp;</p> <p>But try spending 10 minutes switching between the Windows Store and Google Play or the iTunes App Store, and there’s just no comparison. Microsoft may now have the essentials for the social, surfing and storage set, but who’s going to be happy with utility?&nbsp;</p> <p>The reason that we all fell in love with Apple’s App Store was the choice of jaw-slackening brilliant gems from some of the world’s best developers. And after years trapped in Fugly Town, Android’s army of attractive, useful apps is catching up with iOS fast (in fact, there are quite a few Android apps that are superior to their Apple counterparts). So why would you be happy with the basics that Microsoft’s Store has on offer?</p> <p>That said, your view of the Surface’s flexibility will change based on your the rest of your ecosystem. If your world is already embedded in Microsoft, life with a Surface will be a thousand times more rewarding straight out of the box. While some W8 apps pale in comparison to their iOS and Android counterparts, Evernote’s is handsome and useful.</p> <p><strong>Files: Dropbox</strong></p> <p>Google’s ever-expanding Drive may have given Dropbox a bruise or two recently – and Microsoft has its own SkyDrive plans – but one of the original cloud file storage services is still one of the best. The Windows 8 app is a must, and comes with such smart additions as instant camera upload to your Dropbox account.</p> <p><strong>Mail: Mail</strong></p> <p>Yes, yes, we know: this is the native W8 app, not some third party adventure. But top marks to Microsoft: the default app is easy on the eye (in a rather austere, business-like way), and very functional. Easy to set up with your Outlook or Gmail accounts in seconds.</p> <p><strong>Radio: 8Tracks</strong></p> <p>Make a playlist with at least eight tracks, and share your bad taste with the world. Or go exploring the baffling playlists of others. And you won’t be locked into Windows: anything you follow or create in the very polished W8 app will sync over to the 8tracks iOS and Android apps.</p> <p><strong>Feeds: Nextgen Reader</strong></p> <p>The best Windows 8 feed reader app by a mile, in our humble opinion. There are even enough apps in the Windows Store to make life liveable, albeit on an app diet.&nbsp;</p> <p>We could understand you splashing £470 for the Surface 2 plus Touch Cover 2, and being a happy bunny. Us? We’d be happy. Well, happy-ish. But the odd doubt may creep in.&nbsp;</p> <p>We’d know that for roughly the same money, you can get a fully fledged Windows laptop with a 1TB drive that would let us install any damn Windows applications we wanted to, without a warning screen. The 900g weight, size and 10.6-inch 1080p screen are the same, which is no bad thing given how much we liked the original design, though MS could have done a little work rebalancing the Surface Pro + kickstand + Touch Cover set-up to make it less top-heavy.&nbsp;</p> <p>The biggest change is actually to the neato flip-out kickstand, which now bends back almost 90 degrees as well as the original 45-ish, making it far more comfortable to use for normal-sized humans at a desk. Whack an Xbox 360 pad into the USB 3.0 port (did we mention that?), plug in some 3.5mm headphones (although the internal speakers are as good as those of the best tablets) and you've got an excellent gaming experience in every room in the house, as well as on your public transportation vehicle of choice. Compared to your average, plasticky Android gamepad, it's awesome.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface Pro 2 gaming " alt="Microsoft Surface Pro 2 gaming " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-surface-pro-2-review-games.png?1383046432" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> ...and full-fat software </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Now to the reason you're considering splashing out twice the price of a Retina iPad: the Pro 2's ability to handle real Windows programs via full <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81/review">Windows 8.1</a>, and not just the sprinkling of tablet apps that its Windows RT-equipped Surface 2 sibling allows you to use.</p> <p>The Surface Pro 2 is sprightly when it comes to hardcore image and video editing in programs such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro, although we did notice slight judders in the latter when it came to editing 1080p clips.</p> <p>The advantage here is that you’re running full versions of both pieces of software, so there’s none of the stripped-back amateur fare that you'll find on iOS or Android-running competitors.</p> <p>The stylus-based digitiser - co-designed by digi-pen expert Wacom - is particularly handy in Photoshop, with its pressure-sensitivity and accurate strokes creating the best stickman you’ve ever seen. Its 1092 touch sensors allow it to function as a massive multi-touch surface, but also features smart technology which detects keystrokes rather than brushes, which makes it a great deal more accurate than the original.</p> <p>It kicks ass over an on-screen keyboard, but can't keep pace with a sorted hardware keyboard. There's quite a bit of flex when you use it on your lap, and because it's so thin, tapping becomes more akin to drumming, which could annoy the guy at the desk next to you.</p> <p>The gestures are a mixed bag too - a horizontal swipe with two fingers is meant to move the cursor, but more often than not it results in a random jumble of letters appearing. And swiping or tapping to delete words or cycle through predictive text takes some getting used to. This could improve over time; we certainly hope it does.</p> <p>The Touch Cover 2 costs an extra £100 on top of the Surface Pro 2, but despite all of its built-in cleverness, we think that's a bit too much. We'd like it a whole lot more if Microsoft threw it in for free.&nbsp;</p> <p>A Type Cover (£110) wasn't supplied with our sample, but with its proper keys it looks like a better investment if you're planning to use the Surface Pro for extended writing sessions. Sure, it's nothing to rave about, but with Core i5 on board it's not a bad showing. We'll update our review with a HD video rundown very shortly.&nbsp;</p> <p>If this is all a little disappointing, there’s another accessory: a fatter, sturdier Power Cover which packs an extended battery as well as the Type keyboard on top. The hardware is just as thin and light as the Touch Cover 2 and, in theory, just as inexpensive – though it's not for sale right now.</p> <p>Essentially it's a sampler made up of pressure-sensitive pads with volume and FX sliders plus play/pause, record, loop and skip functions coupled with Microsoft's own Surface Kit music creation and remixing software. Yes, you can do all this on a touchscreen but this way, you're not obscuring the controls with your hands, the sampler doesn't take up room on the screen and the software knows how you're playing the drums/bassline/banjo – softly or loudly. It's a neat compromise between touchscreen DJ apps and blowing £200-£2000 on dedicated kit.</p> <p>Microsoft is <a href="http://www.surfaceremixproject.com/">giving away Blades</a> to design kids in the US right now to see what they come up with. One <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=R9UAxHgXYxw">promo video</a> is promising: a cash register, a place for printed media like newspapers, a way to diagnose patients, a canvas, a game controller. But once Touch Cover 2 units are sent out alongside the Surface Pro 2 we reckon users will just hack the hardware anyway. We'd like to see Adobe get involved - running full-fat Creative Suite on a Surface Pro 2 and using the Blade's surface to work on, leaving the screen free for viewing the results.</p> <p>Either way, Surface Music Kit looks to be a jolt and exactly the kind Microsoft's tab needs. Now, the wait begins to see if that pressure sensitive sampler is still flying solo in six months time.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface Touch Cover 2 hands on " alt="Microsoft Surface Touch Cover 2 hands on " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/surface-2-pro-touch-cover-1.JPG?1381838231" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface Music Kit cover hands on Surface 2 Pro " alt="Microsoft Surface Music Kit cover hands on Surface 2 Pro " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/surface-2-pro-music-kit-1.JPG?1381838231" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface 2 Pro hands on review " alt="Microsoft Surface 2 Pro hands on review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/surface-2-pro-hands-on-1.JPG?1381838231" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Microsoft Surface Power Cover battery hands on " alt="Microsoft Surface Power Cover battery hands on " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/surface-2-pro-power-cover.JPG?1381838231" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Jargon Buster - Light Pipes </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>At 2.75mm thick, it's damn impressive that the Touch Cover 2 is backlit as well as cramming in 1000+ sensors.
