Even if your desktop wallpaper is a satanic puppy de-skinning itself, you&rsquo;ll still do a little &lsquo;aww&rsquo; when you see how the icons move over the background image. And that&rsquo;s not all. Windows 8.1 apps now have title bars at the top, making them easier to drag around to snap them to the side or close them completely.</p> <p>While it might not quite fit the design of some Windows 8 apps, the taskbar can now be overlaid on top of them. But screw looks, we say. This is what we&rsquo;ve wanted since the very beginning, and we&rsquo;re happy Microsoft has finally delivered.</p> <p>The hot corners that bring in Charms have also been tweaked. They&rsquo;ve now got a delay to ensure that they don&rsquo;t pop up unexpectedly, which is another very welcome improvement.</p> <p>While you can already change the settings to boot straight to the classic Windows desktop, Microsoft it working with device manufacturers to implement the more sensible option so that it&rsquo;s ready to roll out of the box.&nbsp;</p> <p>While tablets will still boot directly to the touch-friendly Start Screen, desktops and non-touch laptops will now kick you straight into the old-style desktop.</p> <p>Oddly enough, if you boot to the classic desktop then that affects which apps open certain files. Windows Vista&rsquo;s initial problems gave it an unshakeably bad reputation, despite it blossoming into a perfectly useable and stable OS.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s definitely a situation Microsoft will want to avoid again, and it&rsquo;s now well and truly on the right track to ensure that it does.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-reveals-windows-phone-81/news" target="_blank">Microsoft reveals Windows Phone 8.1 complete with Cortana, an amazingly powerful virtual PA</a></strong></p> <p>[image credits: <a href="http://microsoft-news.com/yes-microsoft-is-bringing-back-start-menu-to-windows-8-1/" target="_blank">Microsoft-News</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/2/5573258/windows-8-1-update-download-april-8th-features" target="_blank">The Verge</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Classic desktop mode" alt="Windows 8.1: what’s new?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/windows-8-1-verdict_0.png?1396582171" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81-what-s-new/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81-what-s-new/news#comments Microsoft Thu, 03 Apr 2014 11:01:23 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1434785 at http://www.stuff.tv Microsoft reveals Windows Phone 8.1 complete with Cortana, an amazingly powerful virtual PA http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-reveals-windows-phone-81/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New mobile OS brings a raft of rival-besting features. Microsoft clearly intends for the WinPho8.1 version to fulfil much the same role, though presumably without helping you get all kill-happy.</p> <p>The service will be heavily linked to Microsoft&#39;s Bing search engine and will be fully voice-controllable. You&#39;ll be able to use it for standard tasks such as setting calendar entries, but more impressively, it will learn about your habits, tastes and contacts, and understand natural language. Introducing the service, Microsoft&#39;s Joe Belfiore gave the example of telling Cortana to &quot;remind me to ask my sister about her puppy next time I speak to her&quot;; Cortana worked out instantly who his sister was and set a reminder that would flash up next time he called her.</p> <p>Chief to this working properly will be the Notebook feature in which Cortana will store information about your interests, the people who matter to you and what your daily habits are. As she learns more about you, Cortana will add entries to the Notebook, which you&#39;ll be able to approve or otherwise. If she comes to the conclusion that your wife is someone important to you, for instance, she&#39;ll add her to your &#39;Inner circle&#39;. If you don&#39;t correct that information, she might make the decision to put a call from your wife through to you even if it comes in during your designated &#39;quiet hours&#39;.&nbsp;</p> <p>So in short, Cortana will meld Siri-like talents with Google Now-style capabilities, but judging by the demonstration given by Belfiore,&nbsp;she looks twice as clever as the pair of them put together. We&#39;re interested to see how smart she is in the real world.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Meet Cortana!" alt="Windows Phone 8.1 revealed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/cortana.jpg?1396516810" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Cortana will be able to work with other apps and services" alt="Windows Phone 8.1 revealed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/windows-phone-8.1-cortana-4.jpg?1396516810" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Other new talents </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If Cortana is the big new feature arriving in Windows Phone 8.1, there are several others that you&#39;re likely to use far more regularly.</p> <p>Action Center is a notifications hub; pull it down from the top of the screen and you&#39;ll have access to settings such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as seeing a list of recent texts, emails and app updates. Stores are lining up to sprinkle low energy Bluetooth transceivers all over the place that will work with Apple&#39;s iBeacon technology, which will make for precise geo-location indoors as well as out. What&#39;s more, because these iBeacons are reprogrammable contextual information no longer needs to be based on simple positioning. You might be reminded that you&#39;re running low on beans, for example, as you walk past a pile of tins on special in Asda.</p> <p>Don&#39;t think Android and Windows Phone users (whoever you are) get let off either.
