It also plodded along, dinosaur-style, while smaller, sleeker rivals blazed past elsewhere. Google grabbed the web. Apple stole the profitable end of the PC industry and, for good measure, made its OS free.&nbsp;</p> <p>Meanwhile, the enterprise was seduced by the iPad, and yet Office remained stubbornly absent from that device. Look back at any point in the company&rsquo;s history, and it&rsquo;s always tried out new and exciting ideas. And with the likes of Internet Explorer, Microsoft also in recent years showcased an ability to improve old, tired products, turning them into something really rather good. It&rsquo;s clear not enough people notice these things. In years gone by, it was clear plenty of smart people at Microsoft had plenty of smart ideas, but they were stomped on by executives keen to ensure nothing distracted from, competed with, or was remotely detrimental to, the company&rsquo;s cash cows. So what we got was sporadic innovation from small teams, often competing against management and Microsoft itself, which wanted something else to happen.&nbsp;</p> <p>Today, it feels more like the whole company is moving forward as one, thinking different from the top down. Perhaps this shift has arrived from the harsh reality that Microsoft is no longer the ten-ton gorilla up against some terrified tech gazelles, but more on an equal footing with its contemporaries. That may be what&rsquo;s ahead, as The Wall Street Journal and The Information report that Google has worked out deals with major carriers to sell service under its own name.</p> <p>That means that Google wouldn&rsquo;t actually control or own the cellular service, but instead lease it out and rebrand it - and potentially offer different and better terms for customers. According to the reports, U.S. carriers Sprint and T-Mobile have agreed to offer their networks for Google to package and resell to customers, although it&rsquo;s unclear when such plans might unfold.</p> <p>The Wall Street Journal notes that Sprint executives in particular are concerned that Google will turn around and become a rival in the space in time, but Sprint apparently is able to renegotiate terms if Google brings on a wealth of customers. However, a <em>Battletoads</em> trademark was renewed late last year, and Spencer previously expressed interest in seeing the game revived.</p> <p>Asked by Polygon about the shirt, Spencer replied, &quot;I don&#39;t think I&#39;ve ever worn a t-shirt that&#39;s been a complete head fake. There&#39;s a note-taking mode, which lets you scribble on a webpage or insert comments with a keyboard, and then save or send that copy (you can also clip just a segment of the page).</p> <p>You&#39;ll also find a reading-friendly mode, which strips out the ads and navigation and just gives you text and pictures. It also has a reading list that transfers between devices and saves offline copies. In essence, Instapaper in your Windows browser.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/6-things-we-love-about-windows-10-and-3-we-hate/feature">6 things we love about Windows 10 - and 3 we hate</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" title="Project Spartan in Windows 10" alt="Project Spartan in Windows 10" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/4-spartan.jpg?1421901886" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 5. Microsoft says it&rsquo;ll be available during Windows 10&rsquo;s lifetime, which means it could still be some time off, and that it will be priced for both common consumers and enterprise (business) customers. Again, not much to go on.</p> <p>But watch the videos, be amazed at the possibilities, and hope that the actual product - whenever it may launch - is anywhere near as cool as these demos.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-hololens/en-us">Microsoft HoloLens</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/windows-10/windows-10-will-be-free-upgrade-windows-7-81-and-windows-phone-8-users/news">Windows 10 will be a free upgrade - even for Windows 7 users</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/aAKfdeOX3-o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-s-hololens-wireless-untethered-headset-inserts-holograms-your-world/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-s-hololens-wireless-untethered-headset-inserts-holograms-your-world/news#comments Microsoft Virtual Reality Wearable tech Windows 10 Wed, 21 Jan 2015 20:57:27 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1458170 at http://www.stuff.tv 6 Things We Love About Windows 10 - And 3 We Hate http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/6-things-we-love-about-windows-10-and-3-we-hate/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> As Microsoft opens the window on a new era for its OS, we take the Technical Preview for a test drive </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="2160" height="1440" title="Windows 10" alt="Windows 10" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/windows-10-screenshot-02_0.png?1421873715" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Goodbye, Windows 8 - it&#39;s been er, interesting.</p> <p>But don&rsquo;t feel too bad as you pack your bags - it&rsquo;s not like you actually sunk Microsoft or anything (although we know that you did your damnedest).</p> <p>And as you begin the slow process of clearing the building before Windows 10&rsquo;s arrival in &lsquo;late 2015&rsquo;, you can take some spiteful pleasure in knowing that your successor will face sky-high expectations.
