Castillo stated that the Xbox team knows that "there may be times you don’t want Kinect to respond to you", so they've provided gamers with several control options.</p> <p>The first of these is standby mode. Simply saying “Kinect Off” puts the Kinect to sleep, where it will only respond to two simple words – “Kinect On”, and nothing else.</p> <p>You can also choose to fully turn Kinect off within your system settings. Once you do this, Kinect will not respond to voice commands at all, and you’ll need to turn Kinect back on manually in the system settings to use it again.</p> <p>And then of course there's the recently revealed option which is disconnecting the Kinect altogether. If you try to play a Kinect game with it disconnected, you'll be prompted to plug in or adjust your Kinect settings accordingly.</p> <p>Ultimately, Castillo believes that "the new Kinect will let you experience entirely new magic moments making your gaming and entertainment better". It's clear that the Xbox team wants gamers to use the Kinect to unlock the full potential of the Xbox One. The NSA, CIA, MI6 and little green men will find it quite difficult to spy on your riveting living room debates about your kill:death ratio, at least through Kinect anyway.</p> <p>Ultimately, these changes should keep most developers and gamers happy. Uncomfortable gamers can choose to leave it unplugged entirely if they wish, but developers still have plenty of motivation to make use of all Kinect has to offer, as <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/heres-what-youll-get-your-xbox-one-release-day/news" target="_blank">each and every Xbox One console will still come bundled with one</a>.</p> <p>This is a very good thing too, because the Kinect sensor is packed to the rafters with impressive tech and has great potential for gaming innovation.</p> <p>It's got a 1080p wide-angle camera for starters, with an IR sensor that gives it impressive night vision for dimly-lit gaming sessions. Its wider field of view also means that you can stand much closer than the previous generation Kinect, which had problems in tiny living rooms.</p> <p>Not only can it detect up to six people at once, but it can track individual Xbox One controllers from person to person, meaning it automatically shuffles split-screen windows if you change where you're sitting.</p> <p>Couple that with heart-rate detection, facial and voice recognition, the ability to track 25 individual joints (including thumbs) and the speed and weight of your movements, and you've got a powerful piece of kit with potential we can't wait to see be unleashed.</p> <p>Help pass the time till the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/xbox-one-stretch-your-bank-balance-november/news" target="_blank">Xbox One and Kinect's November release</a> by checking out <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/heres-what-youll-get-your-xbox-one-release-day/news" target="_blank">what you'll be getting with your Xbox One on release day</a>, as well as our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-xbox-one-vs-sony-ps4-depth/feature" target="_self">Xbox One vs PS4 guide</a> for all you need to know about the next generation of gaming.</p> <p>There's also an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/xbox-one-vs-ps4-controller-showdown/feature" target="_blank">Xbox One vs PS4 controller comparison</a> to gauge which controller's right for your eager hands and an in-depth look into <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/sony-ps4-vs-xbox-one-4k-war-begins/feature" target="_blank">the future of 4K on both next-gen consoles.</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Debunking the conspiracy – Microsoft tells us why the Kinect isn&#039;t a an evil telescreen" alt="Debunking the conspiracy – Microsoft tells us why the Kinect isn&#039;t a an evil tel" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-xbox-one-kinect-02_0_0.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="500" height="375" title="Debunking the conspiracy – Microsoft tells us why the Kinect isn&#039;t a an evil telescreen" alt="Debunking the conspiracy – Microsoft tells us why the Kinect isn&#039;t evil" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/kinect-2-2_0.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/kinect/microsoft-tells-stuff-why-kinect-isnt-evil-telescreen/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/kinect/microsoft-tells-stuff-why-kinect-isnt-evil-telescreen/feature#comments Games consoles Kinect Microsoft Xbox One Wed, 14 Aug 2013 11:43:25 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1425539 at http://www.stuff.tv Netflix won't be watching you with the Xbox One's Kinect. "In the eventual future, maybe," Todd Yellin, Netflix's vice president of product innovation, tells Stuff. "We think user privacy is sacrosanct, and we want our users to be super comfortable with what we're doing. The idea of a camera peering into their living room is something that presents some great possibilities, but it also presents some big concerns."</p> <p>Yellin predicts that attitudes towards personalisation and privacy will soften over time. "When we first started doing focus groups, back in the Netflix DVD days, we'd say, "We're personalising, we're paying attention to what you're watching." The term "Big Brother" would come up – now, when we talk about personalisation, you very rarely hear that."</p> <p>The same thing is happening with social features – "some people are very uncomfortable with sharing what they watch, and some people are super comfortable. So our Facebook feature on Netflix is an optional feature; some people love it, some don't."</p> <p>The new Kinect, says Yellin, "isn't something we would jump into haphazardly, this would take more of a societal evolution of people getting increasingly comfortable."</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Xbox One UI" alt="Xbox One UI" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/xbox-one-ui.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Xbox One Kinect" alt="Xbox One Kinect" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/microsoft-xbox-one-kinect-01_4.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Into the Woods </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>"What if you could radically alter the way stories get told?" Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos <a href="http://www.gq.com/entertainment/movies-and-tv/201302/netflix-founder-reed-hastings-house-of-cards-arrested-development">asked GQ</a> earlier this year. Kinect's wealth of user data could help Netflix do that.</p> <p>At the moment, films are built around three- or five-act structures, and TV shows are structured around the narrative peaks and troughs of ad breaks – which Netflix doesn't have to worry about. With Kinect, Netflix could find out what jokes the audience is laughing at, where their attention is flagging, and where their concentration peaks – to the minute. And if that five-act structure doesn't match those peaks and troughs? Change it.</p> <p>Netflix has already shown that it isn't married to existing narrative conventions – its Arrested Development episodes aren't tied to the traditional 25-minute sitcom slot, and Sarandos has mooted the idea of mixing things up further, with 15-minute episodes and feature-length stories making up a single TV "season".</p> <p>Kinect would give Netflix more information on its viewers' habits than any screenwriter or movie executive has ever been able to tap into – and it could change the film and TV industry more than we realise. But first, we'll have to get comfortable letting Kinect into their lives.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Orange is the New Black" alt="Orange is the New Black" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/orange-is-the-new-black.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Arrested Development Season 4" alt="Arrested Development Season 4" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/arrested-development-season-4-four-new-clips.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Netflix: We won&#039;t watch you with the Xbox One&#039;s Kinect </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> &quot;Privacy is sacrosanct,&quot; says video streaming service </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/kinect/netflix-wont-be-watching-you-xbox-ones-kinect-yet/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/kinect/netflix-wont-be-watching-you-xbox-ones-kinect-yet/news#comments Apps and Games Kinect Microsoft Netflix Xbox One Fri, 02 Aug 2013 15:45:05 +0000 Stephen Graves 1425253 at http://www.stuff.tv
