The PlayStation 4 supports PS2 games… sort of

Don’t dust off those old discs just yet though

The Xbox One’s backwards compatibility feature is one skill that sets it apart from its Sony rival. At least, it used to be.

It turns out that the PlayStation 4 can also happily emulate PS2 and PSOne games. But don’t get too excited just yet.

Developers have reportedly had access to emulation software since January last year, letting them convert their older titles to a PS4-friendly format.

The discovery was made when Eurogamer uncovered four older Star Wars titles that are included in the limited edition Star Wars PS4 console bundle.

The older titles were clearly running on an emulator as opposed to being remastered versions, revealing that the PS4 can indeed play nice with older games.

Sadly though, this doesn’t mean that feeding an old favourite into your modern console will instantly shower you with nostalgia.

It looks like its up to developers to flick the switch on their older titles themselves, so we could see an influx of classic games hit the PSN store in the near future.

Whether or not disc-based unlocking will also be available, remains to be seen, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed all the same.
