Move over, Tesla! The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a sight for sore eyes

Ladies and gents, we have a new contender for the best-looking electric car ever designed

Check out those lines. What a Vision!

Indeed it is. Meet the latest luxury concept from Mercedes-Benz, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6. Inspired by the classic aero coupés of old, it’s a two-plus-two seater coupé with gull-wing doors and, yes, some extremely dramatic sweeping lines.

It looks loooooong.

It’s almost six metres in length, and only 1.33m in height – so yes, this is a veritable shark of a vehicle that should slice through the air. In the words of Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG: “It is hot and cool. With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”

Hot AND cool, eh?

Yep. The hotness that Wagener refers to is its looks and shape – and we certainly can’t argue with his assessment, despite his obvious bias. And the “cool” factor? Well, that’s a reference to the car’s intelligent details.

Like what?

Well, take the windscreen. It’s a transparent display able to show you geographical information and driving-related data without asking you to take your eyes off the road. Oh, and it’s all gesture-controlled, so there’s no need to push any physical buttons either.

The dashboard wing, meanwhile, curves all the way around into the shape of the seat, forming what Mercedes describes as a “360-degree lounge”. Meanwhile, the floors are made from elm (for a “yachting” vibe!).

Oh, and here’s the best part: it’s all electric. There are four electric motors, each powering one wheel in the all-wheel drive system and generating a total of 550kW.

Electric cars can’t be “hot” though, can they?

Oh give it a rest, Clarkson. The Mercedes-Mayback 6 is no slouch: it’ll do 0-100km/h in under four seconds, while the top speed is an electronically-limited 250km/h (155mph). And the battery gives drivers a range of 500km.

OK, point taken. And if I want to see it in person? Or even buy it?

Right now, we’re not quite sure. The car was debuted at Monterey Car Week in California, which ended on 21 August, but as it’s a concept it’ll likely never become a production model, at least in its current form. What’s more likely is that certain elements may find there way into a future Maybach, which, let’s face it, you probably won’t be able to afford anyway.

But stay tuned, and we’ll let you know either way.
